The best Gelato in Italy!…read more That may sound like an exaggeration, but after 15 trips to Italy and sampling the best Gelateria's in every town that I visited, this was the stand-out winner. And it was worth every calorie to find it. My family agrees with even stronger passion and when we visit Italy, we now spend at least 3 days in Sirmione just to eat there. Naturally, when we visit Europe, we always visit Italy. This may sound excessive, but the grapefruit (pamplemousse) is practically a religious experience and certainly the most delicious desert that I have ever eaten. All the fruit flavors are absolutely superb. As are the Bacio and chocolate mint. In fact, all the flavors are superb, but there is a limit to how special it is possible to make plain chocolate. If you cannot visit Sirmione, here is the best way that I have found to discover the finest Gelateria's in a new town: Make a point of eating at cafe's and restaurants with an overweight waiter/waitress, tip well and ask for their recommendations.

On day trips we wait I til we get "home to Verona" to have gelato. I fell in love with the Amarena cherry with Grappa Amarone wine on top and my husband the liquirizo with cherry on top. Both heavenly flovour combinations. And the Grappa Amarone flavored I've yet to see anywhere else.

While wandering around Verona during a pitstop on our way to Bologna, my husband and I came across this place. I noticed they had a crepe machine in the front, so decided to give it a whirl, and I'm so glad I did. They make their version of nutella in-house, and it's some of the best I've ever had--so much that I had to buy some to take home with us. The crepe was made-to-order, and it was delivered to me piping hot and bursting from the seams with nutella. My husband ordered an ice cream sandwich that was dipped in nutella on one side and covered in nuts. They also served gelato among so many other tasty treats, think: a variety of chocolates. Again, this is a must-try when in Verona!! Also, a great place to pick up some souvenirs to take home.

Gelateria Patagonia is definitely doing something right! Skip the romanticism of Romeo & Juliet's grasp on the city of Verona and focus on the gelato here, first off it's located in a great shopping center and there's a line out the door. Great signs! After managing to find out where the line was after pushing through people, I got my hands on a cup of Amarena and Romeo Baccio. A little fruity gelato to go with something more rich and decadent ... you know, like Romeo ... BACK TO THE GELATO- focus. The gelato has a great thick texture, definitely creamy, not too sweet with great flavors. The Amarena was okay, but the Romeo Baccio was perfection! As I learned from my visits to gelaterias it's that you can't go wrong with the following flavors: pistachio, chocolate, cafe or nocciola (hazelnut) or some kind of variation. Price wise, average with a bigger portion! Dropping a star at the lack of apparent line, it's more like who's up next gets to place their order and that it gets way too crowded, especially being walking distance from the Arena and Juliet's balcony.

I got the Viennese coffee and my husband got a regular caffe. I was going to order a pastry but figured there'd be enough sweet and sugar in my coffee that I didn't need to add a baked good on top of it. The Viennese coffee was good - I liked the hot/cold combo from the coffee and the whipped cream. It wasn't the best whipped cream I've ever had - once I got towards the bottom of the cup it had more congealed than melted into the hot liquid, but what I had before I got to that point was decent. My husband said his coffee was also good, but nothing special (this after we'd just come from what we thought was the best coffee shop in Verona, so I can't really blame him in his assessment.)
