The ambiance is like eating at a friend's home, and parking is a bit limited, so it may be best to park outside the gates and walk down the small street. The restaurant is at the end of the little road behind the gate, to the right. I was in the mood for farinata, a chickpea flour pancake, and wine, so I ordered that and then grabbed a croissant to have the next morning. The man working behind the counter was very friendly, and confirmed the farinata was vegan (it was one of the few things not clearly marked, even though it's almost always vegan). This place is small and very popular with tourists, as he makes it very easy for foreigners to order with multiple translations of the menu on poster boards. It makes it look like a tourist trap but really, he's just accommodating as many people as possible. The farinata was delicious! It reminded me of the socca I had in Nice, and it paired perfectly with a local white wine. The croissant was great, too, even the next day. I'd definitely come back for lunch, there's so much good looking food.

I also was not in the mood for pizza, pasta, or panini, so I was excited to see there was a (North) Indian restaurant on the way to the Leaning Tower. The owner is from Punjab and this restaurant has been open since '17. He was eager to greet me in English, probably because he saw a fellow desi and assumed, lol! Because with the next couple that walked in right after me, he had no issues speaking in Italian with them! To start, I got some pappadums and chutneys on the house. For my meal, I ordered onion kulcha (flat bread with diced onion) and veg kebab. The food was very filling, although on the dry side, so it helped to have the chutney around. I was also given a plate of raw onion---fine by me! Everything cost €13 and was absolutely filling and delicious. Definitely come to Pisa for an appetite for north Indian food!!

So, it's been about 3-years since I've been to Il Fornaretto. And, you guys... 3-years later, I STILL dream about this place and their amazing pizza. I compare all pizzas to Il Fornaretto's and none have topped them, yet. This place is in Tuscany but off the beaten path -- about half way between Florence and Pisa. If you find yourself anywhere within 50-miles of Ponsacco, trust me and make a detour for this wood fired pizza! I suggest the margherita, add salsicca and rucola but you won't go wrong with any order!
