The Covered Market is one of the oldest, most grandiose in France and is home to traditional local food producers and retailers. Originally built as the bishop's palace, the French Revolution broke out before the Bishop of Metz could move in and the citizens decided to turn it into a food market. And what a wonderful market it is. As soon as you step inside you are overwhelmed with smells of different foods and displays that are well done. I love markets and this one is wonderful. Wish I lived here so that, I can explore this market fully :-(

My first visit I got a selection of the small ones for my wife and daughter to try. The full-size ones look really quite large and well . . . it turns out they are really quite light and full-size is the way to go. Went back for some big ones. Some wonderful flavors like speculoos .. . but they're all good. At the shop in Nancy they've got a tea room. Should I be back there I will definitely try the tea and other treats. There is apparently a branch in New York that I can visit. Looking forward to that.

It was really relieving because we didn't speak any French at all - by the end of the semester we kind of learned how to speak enough to order what we wanted - and they were still friendly enough to deal with us stuttering and ordering! Their beignets were INCREDIBLE, and to this day my friends and I just talk about how we wish we could go back to eat them. I always asked for sundried tomatoes and olives in my chicken sandwich and they kindly always added them. I think another huge plus about this place is that they have vegetarian pasta on most days. My friends were vegetarian, and to study abroad in France as a vegetarian means cold sandwiches with cheese and tomatoes - and maybe egg. Aux Petits Choux's hot pasta made Metz feel more like home to them, and that's a big part of why we always went! Other great things about this place are the bakery items, like their tarts and eclairs; everything always tasted so great and was reasonably priced. Only issue - beignets run out by the lunch rush, so get there early!!
