Forget the Sacré-Cœur, Eiffel Tower, Place des Quinconces, Cité du Vin, or any other touristy place. This place is the gastronomy dream. It has the views, the food, the fine wine. Coming in just before sunset and watching the transition from day to night from the terrace on the second floor is straw that breaks the camel's back. We were visiting Saint-Émilion after Bordeaux, in search of the perfect canelé(didn't find it). For whatever reason, we decided to skip Logis de la Cadène and go for the out of the way drive to La Terrasse Rouge, and boy, was it a good decision. Wines were Le Petit Guiraud 2014(Second vin) - Sauternes Blanc, Petit Gris - Bordeaux Rosé, La Motte de Clément-Pichon 2016 - Haut-médoc Rouge, and of course, a local: Chateau la Dominique 2013 - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé Rouge. I seriously question starting with a Sauternes rather than having it for dessert, but the lady wanted it, so I can't protest. All great wines, but the Dominique was the best out of them all. It was a fun Merlot blend with a fruity nose and pleasant mild/smooth tannins made for a rich and easy drink. Was a great pairing with the red meat. And I can't forget to mention the water that made for an even more incredible pairing. Abatilles(La Bordelaise) might not be my choice as stand-alone drink, but it's soft and neutral palate elevated every dish. I had to order two bottles(even though I couldn't finish them) and snuck an unfinished bottle back to the hotel(Shhhh). It deserves its moniker of "The Grand Cru of Water." The seasonal nibbles(5 petites portions de saison à déguster) were a nice start to the meal and a good way for us to gauge what we wanted to order thereafter. The foie gras was especially good, leading us to order a standard plate that came with toast and a red wine poached pear. That foie gras was even better and blew all the other foie gras and terrines that I had in Paris out of the water. The oysters were also very fresh. The mint and green pea gazpacho was fragrantly herbaceous and so very fresh. It was, however, ridiculously creamy, making the portion a bit bigger than I would have wished. The Iberico ham accompanying it, however, added contrast and provided temporary relief from the cream. The salmon tartare was well seasoned, and as much as I like eye candy, the squid ink tuile was there more for looks than texture. But it was admittedly very pretty. The meats of the main entree were all perfectly cooked, and I would argue that the duck breast with beetroot red wine reduction was better than the fish or steak. The vegetables on the side were more for appearance. Service was impeccable. Waiters were courteous and made sure that we were comfortable. And when a fly flew and drowned in my Grand Cru(the downside to sitting outside in the open air), they were happy to replace my glass for me, no questions asked. Menu options do change, and I really regret not taking a picture of the menu at that time. Lovely place. Would not at all mind dragging an unwilling friend over here to dine. Delicieux!

They were fully booked for a weekday lunch. Fortunately our tour guide, Claude Guigon, had some pull with the staff and got us a table without any wait. And we are glad of that. We had some of the best food of the trip there. "The Red Terrace" is conspicuously situated amid the vineyards next to Chateau Cheval Blanc and literally atop the winery of Chateau La Dominique. It is conspicuous with its sleek modern architecture and especially its candy apple maroon facade. The restaurant is on the upper deck with lovely views of the surround vineyards and countryside. The deck includes a pool-like facade with pool appearing to be filled with uncrushed red grapes. It invites guest to walk ("tromp") on the grapes, which most do. Foie gras as an often ordered dish on our visit to France. Nowhere on this trip or anywhere else has foie gras even been this good. It came with "grape juice and roasted tomatoes". This description didn't do it justice. Wild the broth it came in included some fresh white grape juice, we suspect that there might be some sauternes included. It is much richer and more complex and suggests a good sweet wine. while our other dishes (including a beef carpaccio with a cold bernaise) were quite good, it will be the foie gras that will not be soon forgotten.

Nice view and ambiance, but food was so so. The only thing that I actually liked was the asparagus appetizer. They recommended the duck which was ok but not really 'pink'. The steak was over-cooked and that was our least favorite dish.

He quickly realized we didn't speak French and made time to come over and introduce himself, then went over the all french menu for us in English. The food is great, however he told us multiple times if we didn't like something to let him know and he would get us something we did like. At the end of the meal he even offered us an umbrella as it was raining outside. Stand up hospitality. The restaurant itself is very cozy inside. We sat in front of the window and got in some good people watching. Nice wine list and even some awesome local craft beers. Food was spectacular and at a good price. All locals here. Because of Remi and his wife though, we never felt like "tourists," or out of place. As one review mentioned, don't let the lack of reviews deter you from coming here. Truly a one of a kind experience!

I am in awe by the audacity of anyone leaving this hotel less than 5 stars. It is amazing and…read moreworth every penny. Let me start with the staff, because they deserve a lot of praise. I believe I emailed the hotel at least two dozen times with various questions about the spa, the restaurant, bike rentals, airport transportation and more, and every time their responses were prompt and helpful, including getting us a table at the restaurant even though their reservation system indicated they were booked. At the hotel, the front desk, bar, and restaurant staff were wonderful - friendly and very helpful. It helps, by the way, if you make even a modicum of effort to speak french - say Bonjour or Bonsoir (good day or good evening), say s'il vous plait (please), and say merci (thank you). In that way, you don't come off like an arrogant tourist. The hotel itself, as you can probably tell from the photos, is beautiful and no expense is spared for your comfort. The rooms are large and welcoming. The beds and very comfortable and the bathrooms and showers are great. We had a beautiful patio overlooking the vineyards. The back of the hotel has outside tables overlooking a beautiful courtyard as well as some lounge chairs to relax in. Pool looked good, but we didn't use it. Location is great. It's about 3-3.5 km from the village using a lesser used road/bike path behind the hotel (as opposed to the main road which might be a bit too dangerous). I would call it an easy bike ride, but its a hilly area and it's a bit strenuous to get there. Much easier on the way back. There are taxis, if biking isn't your thing. Melissa used the spa but unfortunately, I waited too long to reserve a treatment and wasn't able to go myself. But during her spa treatment, I had a nice time at the bar chatting with the bartender about French whiskeys and trying a few myself. Finally, our meal was absolutely superb. Besides a cheese plate (wonderful), some wine (from Saint Emilion, of course, and delicious) and a tray of small appetizers from the kitchen, I got the John Dory confit, which is a meaty white fish. It was excellent. One of my favorite meals in our 9 days in Bordeaux. This hotel spoiled me for all hotels in the future. I don't know why we would ever travel anywhere ever again but to Saint Emilion just to stay at this hotel.

Wow! One of the best meals we had in the region!…read more Four of us had lunch together and three of the four are real foodies able to identify ingredients and methods of preparation. Things you need to know: 1. A reservation is required. They buy the food each day and buy only enough for the people who reserved tables. They speak English so don't hesitate to call for a reservation. 2. A deposit is required, but it will count towards your bill. 3. Wear flat shoes because the restaurant is on a steep cobblestone street that looks like an ankle breaker. 4. Don't be intimidated by the over-the-top wine list. Our group knows a fair amount about wine and found the list daunting. We asked for assistance and the owner graciously asked what we planned to order, then recommended a regional sparkling wine that was amazing (you could actually taste the Chardonnay grapes unlike most champagnes) and recommended a fabulous white wine to go with the meal. She told us that the winery that produced the white wine was now owned by a Texan! Her wine choices were first class and complimented all four meals beautifully. 5. Be on time. They only have a limited time allotted for lunch and dinner. 6. The menu is fixed price with two or three courses. We don't normally order dessert, but since it was included, we each selected a dessert. Le Tertre converted four non dessert consumers into huge fans. The rhubarb plate was perfect for someone who doesn't like sweets. It had a crisp flavor profile with zero cloying syrupy taste. The cheese plate was a surprise with hard-to-find selections. And of course, no one can ruin a chocolate pudding although La Tertre's chocolate pudding converted one of the chocolate haters at our table! 7. Plan at least two hours for your meal. Trust me, it will be worth it! While I appreciate the purist instinct that led one reviewer to object that this is not real Asian food, I disagree with the comments about the dishes with an Asian twist. I love the creativity of this chef and the way he balances the flavors. I had the duck breast (I always order duck to test a restaurant's range) and I thought it had a sharp flavor profile that blended the flavors well, the breast was succulent, the dish maintained the spirit of Asian food without being Asian food and added a delectable French twist. It was both unusual and delicious. How often can you say that? I agree that it was not traditional Asian food, but that was not the assignment. I love tasting the work of truly innovative chefs and our entire group was raving about their food by the end of the first course (they serve an amuse bouchée as well as the three courses) with one of our pickiest (and most knowledgeable)group members saying it was the best meal he'd had after a week of Michelin starred restaurants. Each of us will be back for another wonderful meal with thoughtfully paired wines.

Thank god for international cell phone service, since I was able to pull up my email confirmation and see...I was confirmed for a waitlist because the restaurant was full. Thankfully, they offered to seat us at one of their two outside tables - apparently they thought it would be too chilly to have anyone sit there, but we were fine with it. From that point on, the meal was perfect. A couple of appetizers from the kitchen were different, but good. I don't recall what they were but we enjoyed them. The cheese was, of course, superb (this is France after all), and the fish entree was perfect. Unfortunately, I don't recall the sauce or preparation - this is why you should always write your reviews the next day - but everything was spot on. Service was very good, though perhaps a bit slower even for France standards. But, then again, I think there were only 2 people in the front of the house serving tables and they didn't plan on having anyone outside. Didn't matter - it was a beautiful night in a small French village and everything was perfect.
