We ended up doing a tasting at Château La Dominique in the morning so the best way to end it was to have lunch at La Terrasse Rouge since it is right next door. La Terrasse Rouge is an architectural marvel in the middle of the vineyards. Its sleek modern deep ruby red walls rise out of the ancient vines and provide an incredible juxtaposition of the modern wine tourism industry and the traditional growing methods. The restaurant itself is rooftop and provides amazing 360 views of the vineyards in St. Émilion. You get a great view of Château Cheval Blanc's modern facilities next door which are impressive and warrant a visit next time. We made reservations in advance for 12:30 during the week but we probably didn't need it that early since we were one of the first tables sat. We ended up going with the lunch tasting menu and enjoyed a bottle of Grand Cru which we bought during our tasting. The bread in France was all spectacular and here was no exception. They brought it out with some creamy butter and an amuse bouche of seared tuna. Next we had a cheese plate which was to die for. The cheeses ranged from mild and sweet to strong and bitter and all were delectable. The fennel and duck soup was awesome, one of my favorites for sure. My main was Hake (fish) in a squid ink risotto which was pretty good. The wife's curry legumes were also great. We ended with some eclair which was delicious and some traditional Bordeaux canales which I was not impressed with. Overall this was a very enjoyable meal mostly due to the incredible scenery. I believe I emailed the hotel at least two dozen times with various questions about the spa, the restaurant, bike rentals, airport transportation and more, and every time their responses were prompt and helpful, including getting us a table at the restaurant even though their reservation system indicated they were booked. At the hotel, the front desk, bar, and restaurant staff were wonderful - friendly and very helpful. It helps, by the way, if you make even a modicum of effort to speak french - say Bonjour or Bonsoir (good day or good evening), say s'il vous plait (please), and say merci (thank you). In that way, you don't come off like an arrogant tourist. The hotel itself, as you can probably tell from the photos, is beautiful and no expense is spared for your comfort. The rooms are large and welcoming. The beds and very comfortable and the bathrooms and showers are great. We had a beautiful patio overlooking the vineyards. The back of the hotel has outside tables overlooking a beautiful courtyard as well as some lounge chairs to relax in. Pool looked good, but we didn't use it. Location is great. It's about 3-3.5 km from the village using a lesser used road/bike path behind the hotel (as opposed to the main road which might be a bit too dangerous). I would call it an easy bike ride, but its a hilly area and it's a bit strenuous to get there. Much easier on the way back. There are taxis, if biking isn't your thing. Melissa used the spa but unfortunately, I waited too long to reserve a treatment and wasn't able to go myself. But during her spa treatment, I had a nice time at the bar chatting with the bartender about French whiskeys and trying a few myself. Finally, our meal was absolutely superb. Besides a cheese plate (wonderful), some wine (from Saint Emilion, of course, and delicious) and a tray of small appetizers from the kitchen, I got the John Dory confit, which is a meaty white fish. It was excellent. One of my favorite meals in our 9 days in Bordeaux. This hotel spoiled me for all hotels in the future. Things you need to know: 1. A reservation is required. They buy the food each day and buy only enough for the people who reserved tables. They speak English so don't hesitate to call for a reservation. 2. A deposit is required, but it will count towards your bill. 3. Wear flat shoes because the restaurant is on a steep cobblestone street that looks like an ankle breaker. 4. Don't be intimidated by the over-the-top wine list. Our group knows a fair amount about wine and found the list daunting. We asked for assistance and the owner graciously asked what we planned to order, then recommended a regional sparkling wine that was amazing (you could actually taste the Chardonnay grapes unlike most champagnes) and recommended a fabulous white wine to go with the meal. She told us that the winery that produced the white wine was now owned by a Texan! Her wine choices were first class and complimented all four meals beautifully. 5. Be on time. They only have a limited time allotted for lunch and dinner. 6. The menu is fixed price with two or three courses. We don't normally order dessert, but since it was included, we each selected a dessert. Le Tertre converted four non dessert consumers into huge fans. The rhubarb plate was perfect for someone who doesn't like sweets. It had a crisp flavor profile with zero cloying syrupy taste. The cheese plate was a surprise with hard-to-find selections. And of course, no one can ruin a chocolate pudding although La Tertre's chocolate pudding converted one of the chocolate haters at our table! 7. Plan at least two hours for your meal. Trust me, it will be worth it! While I appreciate the purist instinct that led one reviewer to object that this is not real Asian food, I disagree with the comments about the dishes with an Asian twist. I love the creativity of this chef and the way he balances the flavors. I had the duck breast (I always order duck to test a restaurant's range) and I thought it had a sharp flavor profile that blended the flavors well, the breast was succulent, the dish maintained the spirit of Asian food without being Asian food and added a delectable French twist. It was both unusual and delicious. How often can you say that? I agree that it was not traditional Asian food, but that was not the assignment. I love tasting the work of truly innovative chefs and our entire group was raving about their food by the end of the first course (they serve an amuse bouchée as well as the three courses) with one of our pickiest (and most knowledgeable)group members saying it was the best meal he'd had after a week of Michelin starred restaurants.
