We were in raincoats and Gortex shoes, but they could only do so much. We all broke down in tears when we made the turn from Arco de Palacio to Plaza del Obradoiro because there it was, the archcathedral, standing gallantly on our left. We hugged each other, said a prayer, took some photos, got our compostela (certificate), and then looked for a place to eat. From the plaza, we headed down Rúa do Franco and landed at A Taberna do Bispo. There was a long wait to seat our party of seven together, so we ended up on two tables. Champiñones A La Plancha - These griddled button mushrooms were the perfect way to get our veggies in. Boquerones En Vinagre - These were the herbiest anchovies we had during our camino. They were served with green and purple olives. Calamarcitos A La Plancha - Just like the mushrooms and anchovies, these grilled baby squids were served in olive oil with herbs. They were very tender and tasty. Mejillones - We finally got steamed mussels done properly. So much better than the ones we had at Sarria. Solomillo De Terneira Montaditos - These veal tenderloins were awesome. Perfectly seared medium-rare, each was served on bread and topped with shishito pepper. Vieira A La Plancha Con Langostinos - Lovely to look at, heaven to eat - that's how to best describe this dish! Each half-shell scallop had two plump prawns and they were grilled and drizzled with the same olive oil concoction they used in the other dishes. So delicious! The restaurant was elegant-looking and had the vibe of a tourist trap, but we did not regret going here. There were other items on the menu that we could have tried, but we simply would not have been able to finish if we did. Our server was very friendly and had plenty of recommendations, one of which was the scallop. We were so glad we ordered them!

We ordered cold bottled beers, which were refreshing after the long day, ham, and of course, we had to try the octopus. It was tender and flavorful--definitely a highlight of the meal! The ambiance was lively, and the service was prompt, though it got a bit crowded as the afternoon went on. Overall, a great place to experience local flavors in a bustling atmosphere. San Jaime has satisfied some deep seated seafood craving in me. Galicia is a seafood powerhouse and everywhere in Santiago there seem to be places ready to satisfy your deepest cravings for seafood. However, hidden away in this little corner of flowing cyclamens one finds a Wondrium of the Sea! Delicious seafood: barnacles, razor clams, prawns, lobster, and crab. The service is warm and hospitable. The booze is free flowing, tasty, and peculiar with a selection of local Galician liqueurs, incl. The basic white (grows hairs on your nipples), herbal (with local Galician herbs and way too easy to drink), and coffee (a shot of espresso with an alcoholic punch). Top it all off with the Banofi Banana and Caramel dessert and you are ready for your Northern Siesta. Santiago de Compostela, come for the pilgrimage but stay for the seafood. All your sins will most certainly be absolved.

Exceedingly mediocre Galician restaurant catered to tourists…read more  Although I stayed in Santiago a mere weekend, I enjoyed delectable Galician cuisine in the quaint establishments around town. Not here. Eating our way around Spain, my friend and I were thrilled to try a highly-rated restaurant our first night in Santiago. Instead, we found disappointment. We were seated in the basement since there was private event on the ground floor. The décor is Galician (read: medieval). Stone walls and wood furniture, plus sparse lighting, transports you to a tavern millennium back. The vivacious ambiance warmed the crisp evening. Around us, groups of pilgrims celebrated the end of a long trip. Our waiter greeted us with a hefty tourist menu that proffered endless dishes in multiple languages. We ordered lightly, having partook a five-course tasting lunch.   = Food =   Galician king scallop (€4.80): Baked scallops au gratin with breadcrumbs and white wine sauce. Supposedly. Meager scallops coupled with meager flavoring makes for a dish so ordinary it is resistant to critique. Was the scallop fresh and juicy? No idea. Was the sauce balanced and complementary? Who knows. We did not finish this shadow of a proper baked scallop. Grilled razor shells (€15): Navajas cooked with white wine, paired with lemon. We were both obsessed with razor clams (known as navallas or navajas). These clams were juicy, with a moderately chewy consistency. Regrettably the faint fishiness and the gunky guts detracted our enjoyment. The lemon slice helped somewhat. Padrón peppers: These small green peppers are one of my favorite dishes in Spain. The coalition of the sweet green flesh, the bitter white filaments, the picante seeds, and the light dust of salt, is irresistible. The peppers were good, but extraordinarily over-salted. The Spanish tend to salt more than Americans, but never had I needed to swab the salt off before eating each of these. Panna cotta: average. Flan: good consistency and egg flavor. Could use stronger caramel and lower baking temperature for a smoother texture, but otherwise adequate. Mousse crumble: not sure exactly what this dish was, as it was mis-delivered (in place of the panna cotta). Once we informed our waiter of the mistake, he quickly brought us the panna cotta and let us keep this mousse. It was a heavy for my taste.   = Verdict = This restaurant was likely popularized by the NYT feature nine years ago. Spirited ambiance and large menus make this restaurant a good spot for big groups. But falls short for foodies looking to savor good Galician cuisine.

We had the Russian salad and the LAMB shoulder, WOW!! Try it! UNBELIEVABLE!!! Slow cooked lamb, cook to perfection. You want to do the caveman thing and pick the whole leg up. As many good meals as we have had on this trip, and we had some good ones, this one stands out. Establishment appearance: good. Unassuming exterior but pleasant and comfortable on the inside. Service: excellent. From greeting to farewell,  the staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome, and satisfied. Quality of ingredients: couldn't be better. Most still alive when you walk in the door. The waiter proudly shows some of them for your approval before they are cooked. We decided on the "Mariscada Especial" a large seafood platter for 2. A large (approx 32" long) platter layered with every shellfish you can think of, and some you may never have seen before; they even threw in some "percebes" (barnacles) a small crustacean mostly found in northern Spain and part of France and considered a delicacy, with a price to match it's reputation. Before the meal arrived, we ordered a local beer. A large basket of bread was delivered with the customary olive oil and vinegar, and a dish with  cheese, sliced toasted bread and the freshest olives I have ever tasted. We had some local wine with the food, and I'm unashamed to admit that as large as it was,  we finished our meal in its entirety. Everywhere you walk in Santiago de Compostela almond cookies or cake is offered; so we tried the almond cake for dessert and even though I had it before, it didn't disappoint. But the dinner wasn't over yet; when I requested the bill, the waiter said that we couldn't leave without trying one of the liquors they use to celebrate a special occasion. On the house, of course. He returned with 2 shot glasses and 2 bottles of liquor: one sweet and creamy, the other more tart and stronger. In my mind, we were getting a shot of our choice and then be in our way, but, after explaining the difference between the two, he said: "try them both and enjoy". He left the table and didn't return until several shots later when I hailed him back for the bill again. The next time I find myself in the area, I know where I will go for dinner, and maybe you should give them a try as well; there is a good chance you will be as satisfied as I was.
