Couldn't recommend leveraging Hanen and her support during your postpartum period more! As a first time parent who lives far from family, my husband and I were nervous about how it would go. Bottom line up front: Book Hanen to look after your newborn overnight for the first month. Right now. Don't question it, just do it. I had always imagined myself being the kind of mom who'd wear her newborn around while also getting stuff done. I didn't expect having a complicated delivery, losing 2L of blood and having a 3A tear. I came home still pretty weak, and overwhelmed about having a newborn. My husband is a huge help with chores, but he was even more overwhelmed about the baby than me! I'm not used to having people take care of me so wholly, but Hanen is also an L&D nurse at UCSF. She was so warm and reassuring that I didn't have to stress. That I should slow down, eat, sleep, and focus on my recovery. Thanks to her advice and support, I healed from my 3A tear very quickly. And I had more sleep overnight than I'd had for the past 5 years! We had Hanen regularly over 4 weeks, and she really set us up for less stressful nights. At 4.5 weeks, baby started sleeping independently in the crib for 3-4 hour stretches overnight, even with just us. I'm not sure how we could have done that without Hanen's help. After week 5, it didn't feel like we actually needed Hanen's help overnight anymore, which is really a testament to her work! Our daughter also started sleeping through the night with no feeds at 13.5 weeks (and never stopped - she's 4 years old now), and I believe that Hanen set us up to do that effortlessly! Hanen also had lots of great advice about scheduling, diapering, baby health, and things to try when baby was fussy. All of it really helped us for the first 3 weeks when we felt really overwhelmed. That included when my nipples started to crack and bleed from breastfeeding. Hanen quickly set up our breast pump and showed me how to use it, so I could pump while my nipples recovered. It was great to know we had options, and Hanen guided us through that journey. She even helped optimize our nursery setup with the crib and changing table. Hanen is great and you should hire her. My wife and I are first time parents. We hired Hanen as night nurse for 3 nights a week for 8 weeks following the birth of our child. We really wanted someone that could not only care for our child overnight but also teach us techniques to care for the baby on our own. She was attentive and warm with our child and an expert coach to us - just what we were looking for. She taught us so many things things it's hard to make a list but definitely includes; how to bathe a newborn, bottle feeding techniques, diaper changing tips and recommended products, baby hygiene (nail trimming and snot sucking), and some useful gas relief moves. In addition, she supported my wife's learning process in breastfeeding and pumping. As others have mentioned, she also provided guidance over WhatsApp when she wasn't physically around. We feel fortunate to have worked with Hanen during this post-partum period. She loves taking care of newborns and moms. I would hire her again if / when we had a second kid (more details below): We came across Hanen from La Vie en Doula via her Yelp page. We were skeptical at first given it sounded to good to be true (a doula with a background as a labor & delivery nurse). We called a number of her references and they all came back glowing. Hanen did a home visit prior to our due date and taught us basics of labor & delivery (even though we didn't hire her as a delivery doula). She also came to the hospital after I delivered to make sure I grabbed all the supplies I could possibly need for our first few weeks at home. Our baby came 2 weeks early and Hanen made sure she was there for us when we got home. She was warm and loving and made us feel at ease. On her first night there, she did a full body scan of the baby. She noticed the hospital forgot to take off the baby's umbilical cord clamp and removed it for us using plyers. She also noticed our baby had deformity with his ear-wells and told us to check with the pediatrician. We are so glad Hanen flagged this for us given the ear-wells could be molded during the first month of life (and not easily fixable thereafter). She does this scan each night when she starts her shift to identify any potential issues (i.e. irritation under the armpit / folds etc.) and would teach us how to properly care for the baby during the day. We were worried about hiring a doula at first give we live in a small space and could hear the baby cry from anywhere. Hanen, however, can tell what the baby wants / needs from the tiniest gestures (i.e. whether he needs to burp, fart, etc.) As a result, the baby rarely, if ever, cried while Hanen was present. Hanen is also friendly with dogs / pets and became friends with our talkative corgi so our house was nice and quiet. This really helped us get all the rest we needed. Hanen helped me set up a feeding and pumping routine from day one. This helped with my milk production and getting the baby on a proper schedule. With this routine, Hanen worked with the baby to help him sleep for longer. Instead of feeding the baby immediately when he fusses out of habit, Hanen would stay up with him / calm him down and only feed him when there is a true hunger cue. She was able to stretch his feeding time by 15 -30 min increments and by ~3-4 weeks, we were able to drop one of the late night feeds as the baby would no longer wakeup around 1:30 / 2am to eat. By ~5 weeks, the baby was able to do 10pm to 7am stretch on his own. While doing all this, Hanen remained focused on baby's weight gain trajectory. Our baby has maintained a healthy weight growth trajectory. In addition to being professional, patient, and attentive, Hanen is very generous with her time outside of "working hours" with the families. She is extremely responsive over text / video calls. Our baby was inconsolable one afternoon. We texted Hanen and she video-called us right away to try and trouble shoot. When the virtual assistance didn't help, she even offered to come in-person to help us (thankfully the baby calmed down after we gave him a bath under Hanen's advise). Being a doula is hard work, especially if the doula is like Hanen who truly wants the best for the family / baby vs. doing what makes their life easier at night. Hanen is trained as a labor and delivery nurse at UCSF (which means she takes care of babies in the postpartum unit as well) and was the only person I trusted with my newborn more than myself. Being a FTM I learned a lot from her. She helped take care of my son while his circumcision healed, taught me how to feed and burp him, safe sleep practices, how to manage his sleep schedules, prevent diaper rashes, give him oil massages, and just generally took great care of my son and taught me to do the same. She has an attention to detail and takes pride in her work (noticed things about my son that even I didn't, washed the bottles and pump parts super well, was careful about how she put on the diaper to prevent leaks, etc). Hanen was also my emotional and physical support during postpartum. I've broken down in tears in front of her while struggling with breastfeeding. Her gentle confidence has a calming effect. She kept me sane in those first few weeks after a c section. And she kept an eye on me and helped me heal physically. I was stubborn and not taking care of myself and she begged me to stop taking stairs, to rest, to eat and drink water. She really cares. Oh, and she's an incredibly talented cook. She would just grab whatever was in my fridge and pantry and whip up something amazing for breakfast or lunch. It was a real treat for both me and my husband, especially during those crazy first few weeks. Hanen also gave my baby baths, did tummy time, sun baths and oil massages, and all of the things she shows in her photos. But the photos don't show how hard she works and how much she cares. We just finished our last week with Hanen after our son was born in December. My husband and I were incredibly lucky to have her help the past six weeks, ESPECIALLY the first week home. There was so much to learn and adapt to as first time parents, her advice and guidance was invaluable. We have so much confidence in ourselves now, we can't thank Hanen enough for giving that to us. We had the fortune and privilege of working with Hanen as a post-partum doula and could not have been any happier with the experience. She's been an absolute godsend, supportive and by our side since before our son was born. My professional background is Security, and any new parent (especially in that field) would understandably be nervous to let their child around a complete stranger. Hanen was amazing as our post partum doula for our first baby. We came home from the hospital overwhelmed and nervous and Hanen was so helpful. Her experience as a labor and delivery nurse was very reassuring - she knows how to take care of babies! We could not have made it through the first month/weeks without her help. She was an absolute life saver and taught us so much about how to care for a newborn. She really set us and baby up for success - I am so grateful we found her. I was able to find Hanen when my wife and I needed very COVID safe help after our son was born. She does everything and it was a huge relief to have worry free help with our baby. Perfect laundry, delicious healthy food, took care of siblings, and able to work independently on all of this so I could work and my wife could rest. My wife was comfortable having her help with everything from breastfeeding to baby baths and I was as well, I couldn't recommend her more. It originally was planned to be short term however we kept adding time and to keep Hanen around as long as we could! My wife jokingly has said too bad she wasn't in the delivery room too. Ms Hanen is a hyper-capable doula. She was an immensely helpful household member with our third baby. Having her assistance for a first baby would be amazing! For any baby she has great tips, a wealth of knowledge as a nurse, and accomplishes so much all while keeping baby happy and safe. Very open and easy to communicate with for what you do and don't want, and she has a genius sense to figure it out on her own! We are very careful as a family with COVID protocols and she is too.
