I sat at the bar and got amazing service with some really good recommendations for wine. I chose the Dorado for my main, and the fish had so much flavor and tenderness. It all paired really well with the tomato sauce and rice. White fish can sometimes be plain, so I was really happy with how the chef prepared the dish. I finished it off with a vanilla creme brûlée that had the perfect creamy texture and a nice hard sugar shell. I'm normally not a dessert guy, but again, the young lady behind the bar recommended it and paired it with a port that really brought out the vanilla flavors. Quick note, the menu seemed to only be available in French and German. Fortunately my high school French came back after my first glass of wine. Overall a really enjoyable experience and I'd definitely recommend.

We decided on the menu of the day and among the 4 tried various options from their menu. For starters, we tried the salad, tomato soup, arabian soup and pate. The salad was large with a simple dressing, tomato soup ok, arabian soup disappointing and pate disappointing as well. The arabian soup was bitter, with an uneven use of curry spices. The pate was bland with overwhelming use of peppercorns. For entrees we had the fish and pork dishes. The fish itself was good but there was very very little of the cream sauce (which it needed) and the vegetables and pasta were bland, without sauce or seasonings. The best part of the dinner were the saint-emilion wine and dessert. A fruit compote with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and berries. Still a lovely time with friends.

Firstly rule, if you want to eat at Le Coq is make a reservation. Being able to walk in and get a table is like trying to win the Lotto, it doesn't happen often but you are very happy when it does. Naturally, the place was packed and we sipped a very good Sauvignon Blanc from the open wine list and chatted, while waiting for our main courses. Our food came and both my friend, J., and I realized that our fish with champagne sauce and spinach was terribly undersalted. No problem, we both grabbed the salt shaker a few times and added some salt to our meal. No complaining going on here, just a few joking comments about the cook definantly not being in love. Time to pay and the very nice waiter asks us how the food was people he asked am I supposed to say good if it is undersalted. Hmmmm?! So we mentions that the fish entree could have used more salt. Is that really so terrible? Hmmmm?! Didn't think so until the manager came over smelling like stale smoke and berates, yes berates, us for my comment. Telling me that I know nothing about making delicate champagne sauce and feeding 100's of people a night. (Hey, who knows maybe the other 100 people thought the fish was undersalted. Do I know?) I gently try to let him know that I was asked how the food was and mentioned it was undersalted, no crime on my part and hey, I am still the customer and paying a good EUR 20,00 for my dish. Do I deserve this kind of attitude from the manager? So anyways, now that I have vented, I feel better. I still love the french bistro Le Coq in Neuenheim, but I hope the manager has a better day the next time I eat there and the cook uses a bit more salt. Hey, but that is just my opinion.

The main downfall was the service, while it was fine it wasn't great and the small things weren't done right. For example, we never got our water refilled and it took longer than average for us to get the menus after we sat down even though there wasn't that many other people there. The food was very good, and the price was a deal. We got the 3 course menu for dinner for $68 per person. We started with the foie gras pate which was done very well. We then got the duck entree, which was one of the best duck breasts I've had in a long time. The fat was rendered perfectly while leaving the meat a solid medium without being chewy. The fruit that was paired with the duck was a good choice, and showed that the chef was thoughtful with his accompaniments. Dessert is what I was really looking forward to, an elderflower souffle. While it was good it was also a bit of a let down due to the fact the souffle was in a cup the size of an egg cup. Elderflower is one of my favorite flavors, so having it being literally three bites was sad. All of the bread they served was completely burnt and I'm shocked they served it. I would still recommend going, but curb your expectations as far as Michelin stars go.
