I chose Berkley Disability based on previous Yelp reviews, but over the course of a year and a…read morehalf, had a series of genuinely frustrating experiences leading me to realize that what was being advertised was not the quality of service that I was receiving. Over the course of the time that I was contracted with them, I called with specific questions on several occasions, and with one exception, was NEVER called back. The one time that Mr. Berkley did return my call, he was remarkably rude, dismissive and frankly rather condescending. Shockingly unprofessional. After my case was denied by Social Security, Berkley Disability didn't even bother to inform me: The SSA did, and I had to initiate contact with Berkley Disability just to get the appeals paperwork sent to me. At no point did anybody ever reach out. At no point did anybody discuss any strategy or considerations regarding how to approach my appeal. That is until I decided that I needed to cut ties and find somebody who will advocate for me and my case. I left a message saying that I was unhappy with my representation. This time, I received a call back within minutes. I was told that Mr. Berkley wanted to discuss my poor experience. They were pushy, and so I acquiesced. He was again, rude and quite prickly. He blamed his staff for the lack of quality service, and offered to handle my case personally. I said I was done, but thank you. At that point, he said that he intended to file a fee petition against my settlement, should a ruling be decided in my favor. I was surprised and asked for an accounting of the time they had spent on my case to date and received a list that was grossly padded. They even included the last call with Mr. Berkeley that *they* initiated. They charged for 45 minutes. The actual call length - approximately 20 minutes. Berkley Disability's communication and follow-through is bad and my experience with Mr. Berkley was that he was rude and unprofessional. If you want a company that is proactive and responsive to your needs, I suggest that you look elsewhere.

Based on my interview of him, he seemed trustworthy: Here are Some tips when choosing an Social Security attorney: Interview 4 minimum and then choose one Try and find some one local since they know the judge and how the judge thinks. On the other hand, hiring someone local can work against you since they may not push the judge too much since they work with him regularly. Referrals from people who have worked with attorney are safest option. Some large attorneys advertise a TON and work on volumes of cases. AVOID THOSE. They won't give you the time of day, and won't customize much. Good small firms get most of their business from referrals and don't advertise much. Look for lawyer who is only SSDI/SSI (not one who does 20 different things and SSDI is just one of 'em) Look for lawyer who has at least 5-10 years of only social security experience. JDs are usually better than Master's degrees for this. (They don't need JDs for this) Have realistic expectations. A maximum amount of $8,000 isn't much for a lawyer. How big is their case load? Less than 80 is a good amount of cases. Lawyers with hundreds of SSDI cases are no good. They're spreading themselves thin and You won't get customization you deserve During interview, do they get back to you? Do they return your calls? Do they give you the time of day? Are they arrogant? Did they answer all your questions? Are they condescending? Are they easy to talk to? Do they have attitudes? Are they short-tempered? You may work with them for 18 months to 4.5 years so choose wisely! Do they exaggerate results? (Good attorneys don't lie/exaggerate or the ones that have high success rates may be extremely picky of cases they take) When you call their offices and they rush you and are rude, nothing will change after they take your case. They misread my disability case, treated the fact that I am trans as the problem, and actually told me I needed to "detransition" and discontinue hormones. That is an appalling thing to say to anyone, let alone someone seeking help with disability. Instead of careful advocacy, they gave me bias, lazy reading of my records, and cruel dismissiveness. Sensitive information was taken out of context and turned against me. Rather than helping, they judged me, degraded me, and acted like I was not worth the effort. Telling a disabled adult to "just go find a job" is not advocacy. It is contempt. I left feeling humiliated, dismissed, and worse off than when I came in. No one seeking thoughtful help, especially anyone who is trans or has a complex disability case, should trust this group with something this important.
