When receiving a great service, it is so important to share. Betty literally came to the rescue to address my breastfeeding challenges; which were engorgement ( days after leaving the hospital), milk not coming in yet, and poor latching. Her being able to come to my house was a game changer. She came prepared with her baby scale, tools to help nurse, a nursing bra etc. She affirmed me and showed compassion and empathy that was much needed as a new mom and not having a good experience with a particular lactation consultant at Mount Sinai East. Not to mention that you aren't really given time to connect/nurse/ get supply going in the hospital... but that's a whole other story . Important to mention that Betty picked up the phone and began to listen to my literal sob story and was extremely kind all on the same day I called her. This is why she has great reviews, people don't pick up phones, make home visits anymore. While zoom has its benefits, there is nothing that can replace in person connection, especially at such a vulnerable time for a new mom. I hope I run into Betty again so that I could give her a big hug. I gave birth at Mount Sinai West and while the experience was great... the lactation consultant there wasn't. I was advised not to pump and she did not help me with getting my baby to latch. Three days after coming home from the hospital I was very painfully engorged and both my baby and I were so miserable. The night before I called Betty I tried to give up on breastfeeding and attempted to give my baby a bottle with formula but she refused to take the bottle. I called Betty on a Sunday and she told me we could do a phone consult since she was in the Bronx at another appointment. I asked Betty to please find a way to come to my home to help me because I was desperate. I was worried that my baby wasn't eating enough and had so much new mom anxiety. Betty told me not to worry and that she would come as soon as she was done with her prescheduled appointments. She showed up and she delivered! She helped me so much and I was almost in tears from gratitude. She taught me how to use my beast pump the most effective way, she showed me different feeding positions, worked on latching, and taught me how to take care of engorgement using various supplies. She weighed my baby prior to the feed and after to gage how much milk she was taking from the breast and whether or not she was eating enough which was super helpful. It reassured me that I was producing what my baby needed. Betty also taught me how to store the milk after pumping and I credit her in helping me have a freezer stash. I chose her based on positive reviews and that she's doing home visits. I called her on a Sunday and she was able to see me the next day. She arrived 10 min early and our session was about 45minutes. She was super sweet and supportive throughout and even provided some breastfeeding support supplies for me (e.g. nipple shields, cream). Very surprised by the positive reviews - I had a very negative experience. I had a phone call with her to inquire about an in home consultation and was very surprised and upset by her abrasive and accusatory tone. She interrupted me every other sentence (e.g. "well why didn't you try a nipple shield? -- before I had a chance to explain that I had tried one), told me the prior lactation consultant I saw had no experience (and whether or not she intended, her tone implied it was my fault). While I can't speak to her level of knowledge, her "bedside manner" was shocking and I find it difficult to believe that she has the kind of empathy you would hope for in a role supporting new mothers. I found her on google after having trouble getting my newborn to latch, and Betty called me right back and came the next day. She wore a face mask, eye shield, and a full hospital gown (even though our apartment was very warm!) and gloves as well due to covid and was recently tested, so we felt very safe. Betty provided a nipple shield, a nursing bra, and syringes to encounter our baby to nurse. It's now been a few weeks and now she is able to nurse off and on - so we've been making a lot more progress than if we hadn't seen Betty at all. I am a first time mom and gave birth on 9/18. A few months before my due date, I did a lot of research on a Lactaction Consultant (LC) and found Betty through the UnitedHealthcare website as an in-network provider. I called her a month before my due date and she was very helpful in advising me on what to buy in preparation for breastfeeding a newborn (nursing bra, Haakaa manual pump, nipple balm, etc.) and described how she can help and educate me in the comfort of my own home. Betty came to my apartment the day after baby and I got home from the hospital. I was in so much pain from my c-section and stressed out because my baby lost about 13% of his body weight from the day he was born. I was exclusively breastfeeding at the hospital and wasn't told to supplement with formula immediately. The hospital sent us home without a pediatrician seeing the baby on the day we were discharged. I was told by the PA's and RN's that the baby is doing fine because he's making the right amount of wet and dirty diapers. My first night home was miserable, my baby wasn't latching well and he cried all night. I was able to get a pediatrician appointment the following day and had to push back my initial appointment time with Betty by a few hours. When I described the above situation to her over the phone she was very understanding, showed concern and was able to accommodate a later time to see us that day. The second my husband and I met Betty we knew we were in great hands! She was respectful of my home- took off her shoes, put on gloves, constantly sanitized her hands and was double masked. Betty weighed the baby with her own scale that she travels with, assessed my breasts and nipples (which were sore, chapped, blistered, etc.) and gave me a nursing bra, a massager, nipple shields and heating pads to relieve the pain. Betty was aware that I was both emotionally and physically broken- her kindness, sweet personality and patience put me back together. She was extremely hands-on in educating me on how to get the baby to latch, proper ways to hold the baby while breast feeding and how to use my hands free Elvie pump. Betty wrote down my plan for that day and offered to come back the next day to make sure baby and I were on the right track. When Betty returned the following day, she reinforced the key points she taught my husband and I the previous day. She asked me how I was doing mentally and physically and when I told her my blood pressure readings for the past 48-hours, she showed extreme concern and advised my husband to call my OB immediately. I was ultimately told to go to the emergency room and it ended up being something more serious than I expected. Betty texted me the following day for an update on my hospitalization and to see how I was feeling. I had a follow up visit with Betty one week later where she continued to reinforce the fundamentals of getting the baby to properly latch and ways to prevent engorgement, pain and mastitis. She wrote down a plan for me to follow and I've noticed that my milk production has gradually increased by pumping regularly. My insurance covers a few more visits with Betty and I always look forward to seeing her each time because of the wealth of knowledge she has on breast feeding, newborn and postpartum care.
