This is a classic pork sandwich with thin slices of marinated pork served in warm Portuguese roll bread. This introductory dine-in meal was coincidentally the most memorable meal of our trip. We came on a weekday for lunch and was seated shortly on their busy 2nd floor interior. The shredded pork slices were so tender and flavorful having been simmered to soak up all of the spice seasoning the marinade in the large pan for staff to pose with at the storefront. You can watch as the staff skewer out the meat in between the bread. The soft pillowy papo seco bread melted with the meat and was dunked in the spicy pork sauce for extra flavour. We paired this bifana sandwich (3.60 EUR) with their refreshing iced tea and a classic papas stew (3.50 EUR). The stew mixed minced pork & chicken in cornmeal thickened with pork blood. The seasoning made this surprisingly appetizing without much gamey flavour. Our only regret was not ordering more bifana sandwich instead while assuming other shops could be comparable. Simply put, this bifana sandwich was so savoury and none of the other famous shops we visited later ended up coming close. In fact even a Porto local whom we bumped into at a famous bifana sandwich spot in Lisbon flat out said Conga was better and she was right. You're not here for the service but a quick tasty bite. Skip it or hit it? Conga is worth the hype and you have to dine-in or takeout this sandwich!

Our walking tour guide who is a Porto native also had this place on her recommendation list. As of May 2023, the construction for the new metro line makes finding O Rapido difficult. It's on the north side of Sao Bento. The price per amount served is excellent. I had the infamous Tripes soup (beans, many kinds of animal products, side of rice) and was blown away. The pork with pineapple is the best pork we have ever had. Both meals could've fed two people. We had leftovers that they graciously packaged without asking. The servers were super nice. One lady spoke pretty fluent English. Otherwise, it's more of a point to the menu (which has English subtitles) type place. The wine list is pretty extensive. They have a bathroom. Seating is inside only. They do have bakery items you can buy at the counter for take away.

Its nearest cousin is the Croque Madame only more gluttonous with multiple kinds of meat and an excess of melted cheese. Bourdain went to O Afonso to try his first Francesinha when he visited Porto. However, current consensus motivated us to come here after we watched more recent YouTube travel videos from Jamie Oliver and others. This looked like a more classic, retro-style diner like Mel's Drive-In, but there was no mistaking what everyone was ordering here whether they were tourists or locals. Tables were pretty snug, but we managed to squeeze ourselves in against the wall. We knew we had to get the 13,2€ Francesinha Santiago because it was the classic rendition (Photo 8). Fortunately they allowed us to share an order because our tablemates let us know other places around town don't allow you to do that. It was quite a sight with the fried egg on top of a monstrous sandwich covered by multiple, overlapping slices of a Portuguese cheese called queijo flamengo. The sandwich itself consisted of two thick slices of white bread toasted to golden brown. Inside was Portuguese wet-cured ham, bologna, grilled sirloin steak, fresh sausage, linguiça, and mortadella. It was all doused with their house francesinha sauce made of beef gravy, tomato paste, onion, garlic, piri piri chiles, beer, brandy, and port wine. A pile of fries surrounded the sandwich (Photo 10). Wow, I just spent two paragraphs describing the francesinha and didn't mention whether I liked it or not. I did - but I also realized it was one-and-done for me. We managed to have a couple of the 2,7€ bowls of soup. Jamie had the Caldo Verde (Spinach Soup) (Photo 9), and I had the Canja de Galinha (Chicken Soup) (Photo 7). Both were satisfying, and mine had orzo. Yes, that was enough food. Well, you'd be wrong. Now sit down while I tell you this is a flexitarian cafe that happens to make tasty dishes. NOLA is actually an acronym for "No Labels", a cooking philosophy that excludes preservatives, processed foods, and refined sugars. Sound dull? Not at all. Jamie W and I were pleased with the dishes we ordered. First, we shared the 12€ Cauli'n'Cheese, a toasty mix of roasted cauliflower florets and housemade vegan cheese sauce, topped with their own specialties, salty gra-NOLA and "facon bits" (Photo 8). Loved the crunch. For his entree, Jamie went for the 15€ Green Bowl, quite a healthful mix of avocado, spinach, kale, edamame, pickled onion, Granny Smith apple, and broccolini. It was also topped with the crunchy salty gra-NOLA and drizzled with lemon-miso vinaigrette (Photo 10). Very fresh tasting and probably too nutritional for my appetite since I ordered the heartier 18€ Salmon Curry with quite a pool of ginger-spiced green curry sauce. It came with a braised salmon filet accompanied by black rice, broccolini, kale, and toasted peanuts (Photo 9). It was definitely not vegan but still gluten-free and pretty satisfying. We finished off our dinner with a couple of their specialty coffee drinks, the 5€ Iced Coffee Latte with coconut sugar and cardamom for Jamie and the 6€ Iced Vanilla Latte with maple syrup and oat milk for me (Photo 7). We really liked the quiet vibe of the place, and their karmic guidelines was printed on signs everywhere. We kinda felt bad for the dutiful server who had to take care of three floors of customers connected by a precarious spiral staircase. We were worried about running into closing time, but it turns out they just don't accept new guests after closing. There's no rush to finish your meal if you're already inside.

Pregar is definitely a small restaurant with only 8 tables inside and 4 tables outside. Their menu was separated by language and our waitress opened it on the English menu. My wife just had soup and I ordered the Serra (Portuguese steak with cheese) on a roll. The price was just for the burger and so I added the fries which came on a dipping side (they had sweet chili, horse radish mayo, ketchup) just to name a few. We actually had the sweet chili and later the horse radish mayo to try. So the steak sandwich I had was Medium (they ask how you want it cooked and went with how the Portuguese like their steaks.) It was a simple no frills sandwich. Just steak. Melted cheese on a roll. The bread was soft and complimented the meat in a 1-1 ratio which I like. Sometimes with a burger, you have more bread with a small burger in the middle. The Serra was 12 euro and thought that was a fair price for a steak sandwich. Overall, I'd give the Serra 4 stars. Service was wonderful and our waitress was attentive and helpful with her suggestions on the steak sandwich to go with. 5 stars. Overall, it was a great lunch and we enjoyed being one of the first ones to dine that day. By the time we were about to finish, more patrons were coming in to eat. Definitely a place If you happen to be near Pregar, I would recommend to try.
