In 1953, a French immigrant in Porto invented the famous francesinha sandwich just 400 meters from the Lado B Café. However, since he's no longer alive, that restaurant does not serve the best francesinha in town. That honor goes to Lado! Pronounced "Frances-ZEEN-yuh" it's a wonderful treat with various sausages and a thin steak between crunchy bread covered in melted cheese that prevents the bread from getting soggy as the sandwich is surrounded by a beautifully subtle tomato sauce. It's wonderful and can even be topped with an egg. And this cafe is now the ultimate place in the world to try the Portuguese specialty! Don't leave Porto without a visit!

If you want authentic francesinha then this is the place to go. It was DELICIOUS and the gravy that came with it was the best part of the entire dish. Definitely recommend ordering a side of fries to dip in the gravy. It's a heavy meal and you might feel like you have high cholesterol afterwards but 100% worth it.

My first Francesinha experience. I was looking forward to trying the belly busting icon sandwich. Only in Porto! Lado B claims to have The best Francesinha in the world. What a letdown! Two Thumbs down. The flavors was not what I expected, it just did not complement the different types of meat. The sauce was okay, I could have used an extra sauce. The service was mediocre, as they got very busy later on they were understaffed and they were overwhelmed. First time and will be my last.

    The "Melhor" version.

Very popular restaurant off of the busy shopping street Santa Catarina. Even at 2:30 in the afternoon, we waited about 30 minutes to get in. It's a narrow restaurant, packed with tables. You tell the head server your name and how many people are in your party. They are good about following the line. They have the classic and "better" version of the classic Francesinha sandwich, and it is a belly buster. Delicious, and there's even a vegetarian version using soy. There are burger and other sandwich options, but I don't know why anyone would order anything else. If you're only going to have one, this might be the place to get it.

This is the only place where I tried the francesinha sandwich so I can't really compare it to other places. Overall I thought it was flavorful and I liked the sauce.

Francesinha, before the storm! Extra sauce not pictured, and I haven't dumped the fries in the plate yet

Great place for Francesinha! (Disclaimer: first experience with this Portuguese classic) Just down the road from another well-known Francesinha establishment, my group of 5 opted to come here rather than wait in line. We were seated immediately, minutes before several other groups showed up and had to wait. I ordered the traditional Francesinha with a (free!) fried egg on top, a side of fries, and a beer, for a total of €12.40. Not a bad price for the amount of food I got! There was absolutely no shortage of meat in this sandwich. It is a LOT of food, be ready! It's hearty and packed with protein, and the meat was properly cooked. Nicely melted cheese, not too much of it to be overpowering. The sauce had some good flavor to it, too. I would've liked a little more spiciness, but I have no reference point from which to judge. I thought it was pretty dang good nonetheless. We were there with a local (I'd forgotten how easy it is to navigate restaurants as a fluent speaker of the local language...), and he clued us in on the fact that you can get extra sauce for free. Good call! The waiter brought us a whole gravy boat of deliciousness, and I happily topped up my fries and sandwich. I couldn't imagine how it could get much better. This was pretty tasty.

first francesinha experience and it was amazing

My first time experiencing this meal and I was blown away! The extra gravy boat was also a good touch. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Porto, the wait was well worth it and you know when a small place like this is packed, it's good

Excellent Food. Even better prices! Once you start eating the waiters are ready to add more sauce anytime you want.

Go for the famous "cachorrinhos," aka little sausage sandwiches, stay for the vibe and the rest of…read morethe menu. I'd read about this place online and was glad we went. It's one of those incredibly soulful spots that I feel are, low-key, becoming extinct in big cities, where everything is starting to look homogenized. We queued for about 15 minutes and grabbed seats at the bar. This was with awful weather and before peak tourist season, so I imagine the lines can get quite long. Pro tip: don't head inside just because you see someone leave. I made that mistake and was told to wait for someone to call me over. The people working here have zero sense of urgency, and that's part of the magic. You're in Portugal. Relax. The cachorrinhos were great, but we also had a steak sandwich that was phenomenal. Think greasy street food in a compact, hole-in-the-wall spot. Pair it with a beer and fries, and you've got the perfect lunch. They take cards!

This is definitely one of several places I wished I'd had time to go back to more than once, or…read moreindeed, ideally, that they'd somehow decide to open an offshoot in the exact place I live in the US (counterpoint, that that would *suck* for my arteries)... I'm very glad we stopped here while we were in Porto. I'm also glad we managed to find two *seats* together - the place is tiny, and well-attended. It's a bit cramped if you're dining in, but worth it (assuming you can find a seat.) I was also spoiled after the first fried cheese-dog arrived like 2 minutes after ordering it, despite it being so busy - the pica pao took a longer time (not an unreasonably long time), as did the second cachorrinho I decided I needed to get even though I wasn't *terribly* hungry after sharing the first two items, cause it was so good, and I knew I wouldn't be back any time soon, if ever (was fine by me, as I was also enjoying trying a bunch of Portuguese spirits for cheap - 3.5 euro for a decently large glass of ginja, 3-5 euro for various Portuguese brandies... they thought I was weird ordering a large glass of ginja, but it goes *so* well with the salty deep fried food served here.) Cachorrinhos are super unhealthy obviously, being basically a fried hot dog stuffed with cheese, but excellent, totally worth the roughly 5 bucks. The pica pau Americo was also a pretty good value, as a "small" is... not small. I figured I should try both of the things they were most known for - the pica pau was great too, but if I were ever back, I'd probably just stuff my face with wonderful fried crispy cheese dogs.
