This is a must stop for us when we travel to New Orleans from Corpus Christi, TX. The alligator sausage is wonderful.

The Covington Farmer's Market is the place to go if you want farm fresh produce, meats, seafood,…read moreand craft food items. Everyone knows that the fresher your food is, the better it tastes. Not only do you get extremely fresh items, you're able to meet the farmer who raised the animals and grew the vegetables you're buying. In my opinion, this is the best farmers market within driving distance of New Orleans. Here are the reasons why: Proximity to farms - Many people may not know this, but the Northshore is home to many different types of farms. Because Covington is close to the farm, you will get the freshest possible items. Variety - Whether you eat meat, are a vegetarian, or even a pescetarian, there will be something for you at this market. I particularly like the farm fresh meats. On my last visit I spoke with a cattle farmer who was selling his wares. His offer of a processed half or full cow seemed highly desirable, but I had nowhere to store that much meat. I did buy some of his ground beef which was better than anything I have sampled before, including from fancy stores. There are also numerous vendors selling products they made locally. As Jennifer B. mentioned, the Italian cookie stand is a must visit. Besides amazing products, the guys who run the stand are very friendly and entertaining characters. If you have kids make sure you pick up one of their cookies in the shape of popular cartoon characters. Besides all the food, there are also several plant vendors each week. I don't know much about plants, but they had quite the variety. I am a big fan of this market, and think you will be too.

This past year I've had a thing for purchasing copper jewelry- most bracelets from South Korea, Mexico City, Tijuana and Mt. Charleston. Wondered if anyone ever made copper necklaces. I saw a few vendors that had thick linked chains. I bought the medium $45 length- tax is high in New Orleans. Far cry from dainty but copper is supposed to be good for arthritis and health. Congested with wandering tourists, most of the vendors sell items that could be found at any flea market in the country. A lot of the souvenirs and clothing fell way short in reflecting authentic New Orleans craftsmanship. I was hoping for a market more along the lines of Barcelona's La Boqueria with bounties of fresh produce and appetizing edibles, but there was just a row of fast food kiosks beyond the beignets at Cafe du Monde. Without a doubt, the highlight of the market was the strolling groups of musicians randomly playing jazz to enraptured tourists. RELATED - Exploring New Orleans? The time has come for me to update my review of the Red Stick Farmers Market! I can honestly say it…read moreis one of the greatest things about Baton Rouge. It allows residents and visitors to buy fresh locally grown produce and more from small businesses in our community. There are all sorts of vegetables, fungi, and fruits (in season) but that's only the start. One can buy meats and seafood at the Market, as well as dairy products. Then there are the plant vendors, who sell everything from houseplants to garden plants. Then there are the craftspeople who sell things ranging from soap, to canned goods, to baked goods. There's the food vendors as well, in the Main Street Market (which is open weekdays and Saturdays), and at the market tables. There's often live music performed by local artists. There's events for the kids, and adults as well, with themed weekends all summer. Things that emphasize the local produce availing in that time. These can include cooking demonstrations and activities for all ages. There's plenty of free parking in the Galvez Garage, and in inclement weather the market moves inside on the first floor of the Garage so it goes on rain or shine. Going to the Farmers Market is an important weekly event for many people, including me. Give it a try, and you can come to enjoy it as well.

We bought an art piece from a local artist and enjoyed chatting with him about his background and interest in teaching young and old students interested in art.

It feels good to support local and these days it's no more expensive than the stuff at the store. Check it out! (Dog/Family friendly!) There are multiple crescent city farmer's markets throughout the city but I believe this one is referencing the one in Mid-City that used to be in the parking lot at American Can apartments but has now relocated to the Lafitte Greenway! Soooo I don't normally cook so I was there to just check it out and maybe get some prepared food! I lucked out bc Plume Algiers had some delicious chai and stuffed naan with goat cheese and mushrooms! It was super easy to pay with Venmo and they had their venmo account right on a laminated sheet! Score! I like this new location for the farmer's market bc there is more space to spread out than the American fan parking lot. Plus it's such a great outdoor space right off the Lafitte Greenway with two sets of bike racks, benches, hand sanitizer stations, and even a lit stage! They also have a booth where you can get tokens and they accept EBT which is awesome! There were lots of different booths with everything from Fruits, vegetables, seafood, bread, local honey, and so much more! One of the highlights for me is seeing the beautiful rainbow flag that ends in a trans ‍ flag! Way to represent! They also have lovely metallic sculptures that light up in different colors at night! Happy Farmer's Marker Shopping!

They have some freshly prepared food you can order and eat here and then other things that are packaged you can eat now or later. There are also many arts and crafts to enjoy and then an interesting selection of various other books, crafts and knickknacks. It does seem to be pretty variable here as I've been here when they had lots of amazing things and other times where the selection was blah. I've enjoyed some great live music here and then just had pretty blah times. The good news is this market is located right in downtown Gretna so there are lots of good options to eat and drink at in the area so if you arrive on a less than optimal market day there is still plenty to keep you occupied.
