Sometimes a personal story, tells you everything you need to know about a place or a product versus a review that is generically nice or harsh. For that reason, this review is a personal story. i'm embarrassed to say that the La Grange Animal Hospital was my second choice to care for our family cat, Stryker. I wish they had been my first as our family's cat would have received much better care upfront, been diagnosed accurately sooner, and possibly survived the autoimmune disease that eventually took his life (IMHA). Due to my tragic mistake, I'd advise other pet parents to choose a vet based on care and reputation rather than proximity to your home. When I realized that my original veterinarian was not able to diagnose the condition accurately after two separate visits two weeks apart, despite the Complete Blood Count (CBC) showing an alarming low level of red blood cells, and a very high white blood cell count, I took Stryker to La Grange Animal Hospital. Dr. Sheehan and her staff examined him thoroughly and , unfortunately, this time the CBC came back even more alarming (even lower results on the red and even higher results on the white). Due to her experience with cats, Dr. Sheehan recognized the auto immune disease called IMHA. Even though it was disturbing that Stryker was so sick, I was relieved that someone had a clue what was going on and knew how to treat it. On a course of antibiotics and steroids, over the next few weeks, Stryker seemed to get better and better. In the end though, the effects of IMHA were more than his 14 year-old body could handle. The disease stopped responding to steroids. We took him in to the hospital on an "ER basis" when it became apparent that he was no longer responding to the treatment. They did all they could possibly do to support him and try to get him back to health, however, he passed away that evening in the hospital. When Dr. Sheehan called to give us the news, she was very comforting. She let us know that a 14-year-old cat is the equivalent of a 90 year-old human. We realized then that we had made the right choices and there wasn't much else we could have done. I felt even better that I had at least gotten him to the right place. I wish I had just done it sooner. If you have a beloved family cat, I highly recommend that you put that cat in the care of La Grange Animal Hospital and Dr. Sheehan. She is highly experienced, very thorough, and very direct. She's very serious about what she does and very good at it. It seems to me that most veterinarians are very familiar with dogs and can take good care of them. Cats however, are a bit of a different challenge. They really require care from a veterinarian who understands their unique biology and behavior. I'm sure La Grange Animal Hospital is great for cats AND other pets, but Dr. Sheehan and her staff seem to really understand cats. If you're a cat lover, this is definitely the place for you and your pet(s)! I'd also like to mention that La Grange Animal Hospital took Stryker in on an emergency basis where there is a bit of a larger cost. Since they were unable to save him, they waived that charge out of respect for Stryker's passing. The bill at the end was simply for the supplies and drugs used urgently trying to get him back to better health. It is very clear that La Grange Animal Hospital and Dr. Sheehan are big-hearted! As a sidenote, I noticed that charges for exams, medications, and specialized foods were less costly than my previous vet charged for the same services and products . I believe Dr. Sheehan and her staff do what they do because they love the animals not because they love a big paycheck. As an animal lover, that means more to me and my family than anything else. read more

I took my dog here to be neutered and I was very pleased all the way around. They had the most reasonable price in the area by far. This concerned me a bit thinking that the dog may come back with some gruesome scar or something. The scar was very small, they were done earlier than was expected and the staff was very friendly. If you need a spay or neuter I highly recommend Lagrange Animal Hospital. Their spay price was also the most reasonable and the experience was just as pleasant. read more

Dr. Sheehan saved my dog and I am very grateful. He had stopped eating and stopped doing just about anything. I took him in on a Friday morning as an emergency case. They did some blood work which showed he had an infection and some inflammation. He was given an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory and sent home on Saturday. He got better for a day, then started regressing. The next Friday I took him in again. Dr. Sheehan called that night saying he was in pretty critical shape and they would do more testing and x-rays. Saturday morning she called and I was not expecting the news to be good. However, he had survived the night and she had an idea of what was going on. She offered me the option to take him to Metropolitan Vets if I wanted, but I was fine with him being at LaGrange Animal Hospital. He ended up staying there until Wednesday getting fluids, hand feedings and the care he needed to get better. I got a call each day to keep me updated on his progress. It's been 10 days now and he is back to being his same old entertaining and irritating self. Was it cheap? No. Was it as expensive as any of the nearby emergency hospitals would have been? We have been taking our 4 legged family members to Dr. Heye for close to 20 years now. In recent years, Dr. Sheehan has been a great addition to the team. The staff there has helped through pet "end of life care" with our cats and have been the primary physicians for our "Bailey" since he was 6 weeks old. He is now 16 (old for a schnauzer) and requires senior care- they take such great care of him and ensure we are working together, as a team, to help keep Bailey healthy and pain free If you want a partner in your pets health decisions- give Dr's Heye and Sheehan a call. They don't understand separation anxiety. I told them when making the appointment, my dog has extreme separation anxiety, and yet she took him away from me anyway. Of course, he tried to bite you; he wanted to be with me. I wish I had read the reviews online. I never would have taken my dog there. Do yourself a favor and read reviews before entrusting your pet to someone. read more

We took my older dog here to remove some tumors. Got her back with no pain medication nor antibiotics. We asked for both and the vet got very snippy and rude with us, claiming she'd been doing this for a long time and there was no need for it. After a long talk, she finally gave in. She also stated her stitches were dissolvable and there was no need for a check up. Needless to say, two weeks later and the stitches didn't look any different. So we had to take it upon ourselves to remove them, thank God we did. They were not dissolving whatsoever and it would've caused a major infection had we not removed them. read more

Absolute WORST Veterinarian l I have EVER had to work with. Took my dog to them after noticing she had an issue with her eyes (thankfully that did clear up) however at her follow-up she was not doing well. After I told them she wasn't eating she was examined by the vet and told me to keep and eye on for the next couple of weeks and to keep her posted! At my request I asked them to do some blood work to see what was happening with her. The vet agreed to do the blood work and called me the next day to tell me to bring her back in to be put on IV fluids/antibiotics. Several hours later without any follow-up I received a call that she was in "RENAL FAILURE" (mind you i had to ask for the blood work). The vet suggested sending her to ICU (which i declined) I asked what other options were available she suggest an X-ray to which I agreed. Approx. an hour later i got a return call from the vet that she had a severe uterine infection and needing to have surgery if there was any chance of saving her. I agreed to this to try and save my dog. The vet performed the surgery (i guess that night- i was never called or given any information that evening on how it went). The next morning I finally got a call from the vet that she made it through surgery but died during the night!!!!!! To say the least I was very upset, however i know I did what I could to save her. Now comes the good stuff.... a couple hours later I got a call from the office regarding payment, to which i totally expected. I was told the amount of the bill (without getting an invoice). I made a payment and stated I would call to make another payment in a couple of weeks (i have already spent several hundred of dollars). Today, I returned a call back to the clinic after getting a voicemail message about my upcoming payment. I spoke to Mallory (office staff I suppose) and was told that the staff member that processed my payment RIGHT AFTER I'M TOLD MY DOG DIED- did not tell me they needed to have my CC number on file or a copy of a check (as a form of good faith payment). She asked for my CC or a check to keep on file to which i declined- she then stated "we have people who don't pay their bills so we need to have this"... my response was "well I'm not those people and I am not giving you my CC information". At that time she threatened me with THEFT! If I didn't give her my information or a copy of a check they would be forced to file charges against me for THEFT! *************** ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME ************** First off-- I PAY MY BILLS...... secondly-- DO NOT THREATEN ME!!!!! and Lastly-- Send me an invoice.. Nice new Facility, Clean, The staff was super with Spike. The doc told me just what was wrong with my dog. In and out in 15 mins. it was $95. for a diagnosis. The only draw back I have was, it seemed exceedingly high in cost. read more

Very affordable prices for services including spay/neuter, dental and routine vaccinations. Preventative meds such as heartworm and flea/tick are more reasonable than most other vets. Also, boarding prices at $17 per day...very reasonable. Dr Heye is great and only recommends care that is actually needed. read more

Dr.Sheehan is rude and unprofessional. If you really care about your pets in the long haul I highly recommend finding a different vet. Take it from me I used them for about 12 years and will never go there again. read more

I have gone to this clinic several times. I will say Dr Sheehan is very nice, caring and professional. Dr.Heye on the other hand is downright rude, condescending and doesn't seem to care at all about the animals. His treatment worked great, but acted as if my dog was a nuisance. He said my dog shouldn't growl at me even if she is in pain like she is a bad dog. Seemed mad because the tech had a hard time holding her up on her back legs, because my dog was resisting. She has pain in her hip, so that was hurting her. The staff is never very friendly, but I bet it is because they have to work with him. The prices are very reasonable here, but I'd rather pay more for my pets and I to be treated with some respect. read more

Before Dr. Heye retired this was the BEST veterinary office in the county. Dr. Heye was so caring and dedicated to the animals and it showed. His pricing was phenomenal. We had picked up an old Golden Retriever that had been abandoned. It was Feb, she was tripping over her long, matted hair. Turned out she was 70% blind and 90% deaf. We took her to Dr. Heye for an examination and grooming. We brought her home and lived out her last two years of life a happy and much loved girl. Every time we took her in to see Dr. Heye for medical issues he charged us half price on everything. He loved the animals. We were clients from 2003 until 2020, when he retired. Dr. Sheehan has taken over the practice. The prices have skyrocketed, she has a horrible bedside manner - often yelling at pet parents in the lobby even making them cry for things that were beyond their control. She does not put the animals first. I moved all of my animals to another veterinarian and sadly said goodbye to LaGrange Animal Hospital. I so appreciated Dr. Heye and his dedication and will forever miss him as our vet! Thank you for everything Dr. Heye! You're the best! read more

I've been going to La Grange animal hospital since we moved here in 2000. Although many people feel Dr. Heye is not the greatest with people I like him and I feel he gives the best care possible to his patients. We had our cat Xena operated on for a tumor/ growth and although the results have not come back yet Dr. Heye called this am to check on how she was doing. He didn't have to. The Care staff here are great. The doctor, however, was very rude to me when calling about the bloodwork results from my cat. He mentioned slight abnormalities but brushed them off. I asked for specifics, and you would've thought I insulted his mother. Went on about how he's been doing this 30 years and I need to trust him, he went to school for this, why am I questioning him. I tried to explain it was not my intention to upset him, just that I take knowing things like blood test results very seriously. He was cold and short afterwards. So yeah, if you go, ask for the female doctor. At least she'll treat you like a human. read more

Today, i took my very ill, sweet 1yr approx 5 months, in to have him euthanized, i was greeted by the very young, unskilled, blundering and amateurish veterinarian, the so-called "doctor" Ms. Sheehan. I tried to tell her how my Spicer had deteriorated over the past 6 weeks. She paid no attention to me, but, was watching Spicer.. She did not inspect his left eye which smelled badly like the smell one gets when one is taking a whiff of the beginnings of wet gangrene. She did a preliminary hands on for not quite 20 seconds.. I had explained to her that he was a happy little guy, , had already had one round of antibiotics for his left eye which by all accounts was a partial eye from a birth defect. I told her that his personality had slowly changed over the past 6 weeks,, he would not play with my other cats as before. He was a very, very social animal before.. Spicer had lost approximately 5 lbs, but she did not weight him, I told her that, in the past 3-4 weeks, he was hiding in a dark place all day and, when called for breakfast and dinner,, he would not come... I had to get him, hold him close to me, then he would eat, after he would eat, then he would run and hide away until i got him out again to love on him and try to get him to play, to no avail..I also told her he was not using the litter box for urinating for that whole period of time,, I also told her i felt lymph nodes under his front legs and her response was "you cannot feel lymph nodes there.. Yes, one can, they are called Axillary lymph nodes and yes, they were swollen bilaterally.. She told me that, she would have to keep him for "maybe a couple of hours" for a urinalysis, but, could be that he would have to stay there overnight,,She treated me like I did not know what i was talking about and treated me with such disdain, I was.. so overwhelmed by her disregard in what i was saying to her,, I could not believe what i was hearing.. She then proceeded to tell me that Spicer had fleas,, of course i knew this, and then she said,, well,, so do your other cats, acting in a way through her obnoxious attitude, like i didn't know that.. I told her i was using organic oils and special flea soap on them,, all she did was shake her head,, So, bottom line,, she wanted to treat Spicer for fleas, take a urine which would have kept him them overnight, to be sure, and the whole time,, i am wondering to myself,, is this person really a vet? I told her that i had gone three weeks before making a decision to bring him in, but, she said no, she could not do that.. guess she wasn't going to squeeze enough money out of me. I was overcome with anxiety and sadness for both my sweet Spicer and for myself. I put him back in a cage and walked out the door.. I started crying for about 10 minutes, no one in their right mind wants to have their sweet kitten euthanized,, I waited 6 weeks, at least, watching him deteriorate, but to her, she said he looked good, even though she did not weigh him, feel the lymph nodes which i told her about, and basically disregarded everything i was telling her. I am 71 years old and, absolutely do not take anything for granted in this world, especially my sweet, little Spicer, I cried more sitting in the parking lot... Her name is Sheehan, I do not know where she got her degree in Vet care, but, whoever gave her that diploma should have their heads examined. I was distraught by this time and, the only thing i could think of was to go to the Humane Society In LaGrange, Ky. I went in crying, cried for a good half hour,, the vet was there, thank God,, did a thorough exam on Spicer, knew how ill he was, and, after a while.. We put him "over the rainbow" as they call it there.. They were the kindest women there, i had ever met in that type of setting. they gave me water, let me have time with my baby and, let me go in to hold him while he was going to sleep... I applaud that vet, she was also young, and does volunteer work when she is not working at the Crestwood animal clinic,, Thanks to all the great people there at the Humane Society, and, if anyone reads this, please make a donation to them. They are all understanding, knowledgeable, competent individuals, unlike Sheehan. I do not recommend anyone going to the LaGrange Animal hospital, i suspect they will take your money, and treat you like you are ignorant or stupid or both,, No empathy.. She is in this to make money, nothing else. I am reporting her to the American Veterinary Society tomorrow... read more

Our first visit to this vet was just to have our two Jack Russell Terriers' nails clipped. On a Saturday morning we walked in, and the dogs were taken straight back. After 5 minutes and $16, we were done. Fast and friendly service, but we weren't there for any serious veterinary services, so I can't speak to that... read more

I am only giving them 1 star because I have to give them something, otherwise this review would be 0 stars. About a week and a half ago our 18 year old cat Toonces stopped eating and had a foul smell coming from his mouth. He was completely not acting like himself at all. We were set to leave on vacation in a few days and were worried so we made an appointment to take him in. He has thyroid problems and was getting old so we knew he had problems. My boyfriends mom requested bloodwork and asked if he needed antibiotics because it was clear he had some kind of infection going on in his mouth. The vet did none of this and gave him fluids and just said "if he has more good days then bad then he is fine." And refilled his thyroid medicine, which was later found out to be a lower dose, without any mention of it and why that would be. We left for vacation reassured that he was okay. My boyfriends grandma was watching him and each day called with updates, with each day his condition worsening. He wasn't eating and then his paw was hurt and he became frail enough that he couldn't leave his bed. She called the vet to ask about his medicine being reduced and to tell them he wasn't eating. All they said was the medicine curbed his appetite and to stop giving it to him. We decided to leave our vacation early hearing about his condition and drove the straight 11 and a 1/2 hours to make it home to him. When we got there he was in complete agony. His paw was injured and he couldn't get out of his bed, and he was just howling in pain. He had this bad smell coming from his mouth and it was swollen from infection. We took him to an emergency 24 hour vet who was great and immediately did his blood work. He had a blood clot in his paw that was keeping him from walking, his heart was failing and he had renal failure. They recommended he be put to sleep. If they had just done his bloodwork like we asked we could have kept him from suffering 5 days and we wouldn't have left on vacation. They completely ignored his mouth infection and that he wasn't eating. We took him there because we knew something was wrong and they basically just took our money and acted like he was fine when he was dying. My boyfriends grandma couldn't take him while we were gone because she has to watch and take care of her mom, and would have to find someone to watch her. I would recommend no one take their animals here. They may get some good reviews but it's probably because their animal is healthy and doesn't need much care. They neglected everything we asked for. read more

My mom has a bad back and I wasn't there and she asked the lady vet if she could put the dog on the table and in a rude way the lady said no it is against the rules then my mom went to tale him off the table and the lady said we I could have done that. You can take him off put you can't put him up there. And who ever heard of some stupid rule like the vet can't pick the dog up what's next they are not allowed to touch the dog either but at the end say I could have done that. I don't know how ignorant that doctor could have sounded because I know she didn't hear her self. And one last thing she is a hypocrite for saying she can't do something then saying she can. read more

I have been going to Dr Hye since I moved to Lagrange in 1987. Dr Hye has loving cared for my many dogs & cats over the years. He reminds me of the small town doctors from tv. He may be gruff but he really cares for the animals & that's what is important! read more

The Dr. is very rude and uses a lead for livestock for large dogs. He seems scared of large dogs but he will get in your face if you question him. He wanted my daughter to put a lead on my dog that is 10 months old like he was scared, and I chuckled. He got in my face and yelled do you think it's funny? Go somewhere else! Meanwhile I had a very sick dog that needed surgery. He claimed my dog was difficult and refused to even trim his nails. Petsmart will even trim his nails. They did an awful job anyway. This man deserves to have his license revoked. He has no people skills let alone know how to handle a large dog. read more

My family has been using this clinic for more than 12 years. We are always treated with respect and our black labs get the best attention possible. I am always part of the decision making process understanding the options and an idea of the costs. Both my dogs actually enjoy being boarded here. I feel very fortunate to have Dr. Heye nearby as he always had the utmost concern for my dogs and cats. read more

My cat was hit by a car. I could tell her leg was broken, but Dr. Sheehan, wouldn't tell me. I had to pay for an x-ray. Then, when I asked what her chances were, she was rude and said in a very mean way "I'm not making your decision for you". My cat was dying and she was nothing but rude and inconsiderate. I will never go back. I can't believe you're in the "helping" industry and treat paying customers that way. I hope she was kinder to my dying cat, but I seriously doubt it. read more

Dr. Phillip Heye is not in any manner or form, a caring veterinarian, but a rude, money hungry, unprofessional man with a severe attitude problem that he takes out on his customers and staff. First, readers and the clinic should know that this is the first negative review I have ever written for any company, any person, EVER. I understand that some people are simply complainers. I am not. I have been bringing my 9 year old, very sweet schnauzer to see Dr. Hines (another Dr. in the same clinic) for a couple of years and love her care and concern for my dog and I. She is extremely personable and knowledgeable. The clinic is very close to my home and Dr. Hines and proximity are why I became a customer. I will NEVER return after the extremely rude way I was treated by Dr. Heye yesterday. I had a question about my bill following my dog's first ever surgery. When he came out of the back room, he never greeted me or shook my hand, and never spoke to me one time about my dog, how she did in surgery, or post-op care/procedures. He treated me like I was crazy for asking a question about the bill. When I explained that the total was much higher than the estimate I was given when I dropped her off, he sarcastically laughed at such a low estimated price, said that no one is allowed to give estimates at his practice, and that I had 2 choices.... pay the full amount, or the estimated amount and he would take the difference out of the paycheck of the assistant that gave me the quote. I was holding back tears at that point! The awful way he spoke to me, the sarcasm, zero care about my dog, and then to force me to have $ taken out of a paycheck for an employee that I know for certain makes very little to begin with is downright cruel. I told him to take the full amount out of my card as I wanted to leave. He never discussed post op care or my dog to me. He simply walked through to his back room. Dr. Phillip Heye is a disgrace to veterinarians who care for animals as well as managers of staff. There is a reason this clinic is not a part of the BBB. read more

I just moved to the area and patronized the La Grange Animal Hospital for the first time with my new puppy and was more than disappointed in the way I was treated. I had been attending one vet for over eight years where I moved from in Indiana and am used to vets who speak to you (not at you), get to know you and exhibit a caring manner. I experienced the exact opposite here. It was the female veterinarian...I don't know her name because she didn't introduce herself to me. She then literally scolded me for giving our dog table food. Don't get me wrong. I want advice and I want direction; what I don't want is being scolded or talked down to. It was horrible. I have had dogs for over forty years and have NEVER been treated this way by a vet. When I asked her if she was the vet or an assistant at the end of the appointment (I assumed a vet wouldn't act this way), she said, "Sorry I thought we had met" and continued with her business...which had nothing to do with me. She continually interrupted me and when I tried one more time to ask one more question and she barked at me (pun intended:), I gave up and made my mind up that I would never again frequent this business. As a business owner, I don't know how they run a business like this. But then again, no one is ever in their parking lot when I pass. I have already scoped out where I will go next. PS...In reading reviews below, it appears that others have had similar experiences with the other vet in this office. It must just be an accepted norm for them. Not for this girl! read more
