5 stars for its beauty and nostalgia as I've been coming up here my entire life. We owned a place until 5 years ago but visit regularly. However, I think things have really changed over the years. In my experience, Arrowhead has become elitist. You can't enjoy the trails or hiking the lakeside without being stopped by Karen's asking if you live on the lake and to show your card. Fine, it's private, I get it. Seems like many of the locals are annoyed by the "flat landers" but isn't tourism critical for this small town? The lake has become so private that you're limited to doing much at all. The village has become run down and vacant and there just aren't many options anymore. If you enjoy relaxing in your cabin, then Lake Arrowhead is a great option. Nearby Lake Gregory has a lot more options to enjoy their lake. Also, Big Bear in't too far away and there are a lot more options to choose from. I'll pass on any judgmental and highbrow environments though which sadly feels like Lake Arrowhead more and more these days. Unless you own a house here and have lake rights, I'd consider Lake Gregory or Big Bear. But if you like to chill and relax in your cabin and not do much beyond that, Fall/Winter would be best. You don't have to deal with the highbrow Karen's either in this case. read more

It is sad I have to rate this beautiful area so low. Everything is accurate, as far as beauty such as the lake itself & surrounded scenic trees and area. That also passes onto some of the restaurants, shops and customer service at those places. But the fact of the matter as a visitor partaking the area as a vacation spot, unless you stay at the main resort off lake, you are very limited to what you can actually do and none of it offers the lake other than viewing it. We came here at the request of my daughter with my 3 year old granddaughter to spend three days at an Airbnb before Christmas. It actually worked out for us, because of the short time spent. I might add at a beautiful guesthouse rental by ourselves as main house was unoccupied. It was two rainy days antiquing & shopping, while our last day was my two girls at Santa's Village while I hung out between the resort off the lake & shops at the village. The resort was gracious about my disability and allowed me to hangout staying warm. It wasn't as boring as it sounds, I actually preferred it that way. Honestly if you're just here for a couple days, even staying at the resort &/or in a shopping mood or taking kiddos to Santa's Village it works out. I do believe there are a few public hiking trails. But as far as partaking the lake, it's definitely the property owners private lake and no access. The other pet peeve with this area and all mountain areas especially with lakes, majority of people living here are from the city and almost all of them are extremely rude; They also have absolutely zero patience and drive horrible. But let's be realistic that exists everywhere you go nowadays. Just pack your patience and common sense to deal with it and you will survive. read more

Overall the area is absolutely beautiful. The downside is Lake arrowhead is a private lake privy to homeowners and their guests only. If you want any kind of water activities you're out of luck. The good thing is the availability of other lakes within short drive is abundant. The Village in arrowhead is a nice little walk with summer concerts and tons of food options so you can enjoy a walk and meal, your only Lake arrowhead water activities are located here with wake boarding lessons and boat tour, note the captain we had on the boat tour was absolutely horrible and ended in a 1 star review for that adventure. All in all a pretty little day trip and if you buy a membership for approx $500 a year you can bring your boat here and enjoy the activities so it helps limit over crowing so there's a plus. read more

We had a snow/sledding day for the kids in December and my inlaws wanted to join us after seeing pictures and social posts. Our criteria was: -As close as possible for both families -Accessible snow not at paid resorts -Fireplace -Not crowded -Wifi for the kids tablets Renting at Lake Arrowhead was perfect for all of us: we cooked all of our meals together, had so many options for playing in the snow with no one else around, and we spent nice family time drinking and staring at the fire. The first modern A-frame was built in Lake Arrowhead in 1934 by R.M. Schindler, they had architectural criteria at the time that everything had to be built in a "norman-style" and he had to prove with European paintings that there were homes in Normandy that matched the A-frames distinct steep-pitched roofline. Because of this I really wanted to stay in an A-frame. Nothing like residential spaces with that dramatic high ceiling, open floorplan, and huge windows into nature. read more

I have no affiliation with Lake Arrowhead, I was in the area for a wedding, yet I somehow found plenty of fun to occupy my time. There are a lot of reviews that say Lake Arrowhead is a crummy tourist destination. I stayed at the Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa and had a blast. Lazy days by the pool AND I even made it 'behind the gates' each morning to enjoy the ALA hiking trail. There is definitely truth to this being a community that caters to those that own property. The village "shopping district," is pretty much the only place you are allowed to be as a tourist, BUT, on my weekend visit it was great because it was Oktoberfest and they had a fun celebration. Lake Arrowhead does have a pay to play feel, but I had fun. read more

How they are allowed to fence an entire lake keeping wildlife from accessing water is unbelievable. California Fish & Wildlife was asleep on this one. When you build a dam all wildlife downstream suffers and must migrate to the man-made lake to drink. ALA Lake Arrowhead has now completely fenced off the lake. There is no way for bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes or deer to access water. Secondly, yes it is a bullshit vacay destination spot. No sidewalks, no public access trails, no bike paths. You literally have to drive from lodging to anywhere. If you feel better buying your $300 Coach purse or $600 Pendleton blanket at 5000' then drive all the way up the mountain. When you arrive at Lake Arrowhead the sign reads "Dining, Shopping, Entertainment is our kind of nature" - that says it all. read more

We visited Lake Arrowhead during Thanksgiving and the weather was beautiful! We only saw light snow on the ground towards the end of the trip. We did the Will Abell Memorial trail which had a lot of trees and great views! The Heaps Peak Arboretum nature walk was short and very pleasant too. The lake is only accessible if you're a resident within a certain distance from the lake, but you can feed the ducks from the village shopping center. Highly recommend! read more

There are so many hiking or nature workout options (I look forward to working out everyday) and I was able to also do some yoga. You know when something wiggles its way into your mind and won't let go. I experience this, so I picked up my keys and made my way up the mountain. I enjoy long rides occasionally; I came here to get a workout and to catch the sunrise. The weather (in the low 50s) wasn't too bad but then again I'm a cooler temperature kind of gal. The weather did warm up a little once the sun made its grand appearance. I also brought some hot water in my stainless steel thermal cup from home for a spot of tea at the top of the morning--as I knew most places wouldn't be open at the time I arrived. I had breakfast before I left but I ended up staying longer then I had planned to but luckily there was a Belgian waffle restaurant that opened early! A mini retreat! I loved camping at dogwood camp but I was upset to find out that you can't swim in the lake or big bear, greatly disappointed I couldn't dip my toes into Mother Nature water, who's to say I have to buy a whole ass membership to take a swim. I Lake Arrowhead octoberfest is not it is NOT ADA compliant. I was surprised at the Chamber of Commerce put its name behind it. My service dog and I were asked for all sorts of stuff today and then denied entry because I did not have his non-required vaccination evidence, and I only had his rabies vaccination and dog licensing, and service registration paperwork with me, I will never support the village or Oktoberfest or the lake Arrowhead Chamber of Commerce again because of it. read more

It's super important to note that this is a private Lake. Without lake rights, you can't access the beach or the waters. There aren't companies here to rent a boat from because all of the boats and drivers need to be licensed. If you are renting a cabin or AirBNB, be sure to check to see if it comes with lake rights. That being said, I do like this cute lake city. Lake Arrowhead village is fun to walk around and there are a bunch of little stores and restaurants to enjoy. We have been up here to enjoy a wedding at the Resort and Spa and for a cabin weekend. The weather is nice in the summer and really enjoyable. If you're looking to just relax indoors, this is a great getaway. However, if you're wanting to boat on the lake or enjoy time outside, it's a little rougher do to because of the limitations on those who aren't homeowners here. Go to Big Bear instead. LONG VERSION: There are a lot of reviews here that say Lake Arrowhead is a crummy tourist destination. It's more accurate to say Lake Arrowhead is not a tourist destination at all -- it's a big gated community with no gate. If you go to nearby Lake Gregory or Big Bear Lake, you'll see lots of icky riff-raff who don't own land nearby (even people who don't own any land at all!) -- fishing, hiking, boating, shopping, etc. The homeowners who privately own Lake Arrowhead don't want that, so they've ensured that there is nothing to do here for non-locals. No hiking, no lake access, no boating, no bike rentals, no sightseeing. Anything worth doing is locked behind a gate or patrolled by private security ready to remind you that the lake is private and you're a dirty trespasser. Even if you book a stay at a hotel or AirBnb, if they don't have lake rights, you'll be left with nothing to do like every other non-local. The village "shopping district," pretty much the only place you are allowed to be, doesn't have anything a mid-tier strip mall doesn't. Lake Arrowhead very sincerely does not want you to visit. Lake Arrowhead is a beautiful place to grow up , live, and visit. I've done all three. If you live up here, the schools are well funded. The population of children compared to property taxes gives for a surplus of funds for the schools ( lots of weekend homes with no child attending school). Snow days, snow sports,and water sports are a plus for all ages. The local shops and restaurants are nice. Take the time to visit. They change often because it's hard to stay in business. Please support local businesses if you can. The 4th of July fireworks over the lake is a great show. I recommend you get to the lake early to pick out your spot because it fills up quick. read more

Lake Arrowhead is easily one of my favorite places in the world. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been coming here since I was a baby. I grew up with my family taking little weekend trips up to grandpa's cabin in beautiful, Lake Arrowhead, California! The Town: This review is mostly for the lake, but the town itself is also wonderful! Trees everywhere, fresh mountain air, and a sweet small(ish)town vibe in hiding away in the mountains of Southern California. Forgot to pick up eggs at the grocery store? Swing by Jensen's local market. Heaven forbid you need medical attention, they have a local hospital that provides great care for its patients. Batteries on your boat died? The mechanic shop on the lake will charge 'em up for you in no time. The Lake: It is beautiful and when I say well-kept, I mean it is well-kept! There is a strenuous evaluation process they require before you can put your boat in the water there (they want to keep the water clean and free of mussels). In addition to clean, beautiful water, they have beaches all around the Lake that are great for families, playgrounds, public restrooms, and docs for Lake members. The Other Stuff: Every year on the 4th of July (some years it takes place the day before), Lake Arrowhead hosts a remarkable firework show that takes place on the center of the lake. Either get in a boat and sit under the magic, or watch it from far off in the distance. You can't go wrong - both views are stunning. Keep In Mind: This is a private lake. On holidays like the 4th of July, the lake is more heavily patrolled by the ALA (Arrowhead Lake Association). They will walk around on the beaches asking to see your member card and if you or someone in your party doesn't have one on hand, they will ask you to leave. Lake Arrowhead is like being in the Swiss Alps of the San Bernardino Mountains. This place is really nice and I love the little villages throughout the communities. The main village has some great restaurants and outlet stores if you're looking for a bargain shopping spree. Go to the end of the village and check out the lake, it's really nice. Antlers Grill has recently opened up another restaurant that is in the village which makes it that much better! Definitely a great place to get away from the city. read more

Friends and I rented an Airbnb here. Very nice and naturey. The people here have that super small town but cozy feel. Many were very nice and stopped by in their cars to make sure we were okay. I guess we look really confused when we take a stroll. Not much shopping except for the touristy shops, Stater Bros., And local stores. Finding beach access to the lake was difficult unless you have the VIP beach club access. Even then it was a pretty small beach to the lake. I guess it's mostly for that fancy beach club across the street. Roads here were a little scary because they're very windy, hilly, and one lane. Weather is actually legit. It would rain and hail, but then be sunny in a few hours. Trails were also very nice. read more

Lake Arrowhead is I think the epitome of what is wrong with access to nature in today's society. The entire area is designed so that any visitor who doesn't pay into their exclusive club, with either a lake front property or extensive fees - has absolutely nothing to do. They even recently got sued because this group of "fine people" didn't even want RENTERS using the lake. Tough luck if you want to go hiking or enjoy the fake man made lake - originally designed by a bunch of stuck up millionaires who cut off the water supply to the valley. Looks like they have stuck to their roots. I visited here for the first time since living here for one year as a kid and it is STILL one of the worst places I have been to. Rude people, stuck up lake patrol, dirty, and even the second-class places you get to visit (a McDonald's and a few clothes shops) are kitschy and expensive. If you want to experience the beauty of the San Bernardino's as a visitor, hiker, lover of nature, or with your family - go to Big bear, Forest Falls, Lake Gregory, or Jenks Lake. We did four things: Hike, Lakeside Village, Random Estate Sales, Funky Chinese Restaurant in Bluejay. It didn't blow my mind. I think that if you were more deeply involved with fishing or watersport--like if you actually owned a boat--you could wring more enjoyment out of the experience. But if you're a rando tourist who shows up just to take it all in...it's not exciting. Now I understand why I spend almost every weekend in Santa Monica or Venice Beach--which is only 20 minutes from where I live. There's more diversions and everything is better for those who are not going to jump in the water. This is one of those places I'd suggest dropping in on, if you're passing through. We like to go on small vacations quite often, but this is the worst we've ever been to. We were staying at a friend's beautiful cabin and we decided to go for a walk. As my husband and I were sitting on a bench near the water watching the boats, a woman comes over and asks us where our card is. We had no idea what she was talking about, so she kicked us off the bench, the dirt path and made us walk up some unfamiliar stairs. She told us it was not her responsibility to help us figure out where to go since she was sending us a different direction. As we were somewhat arguing, several people walked by that she didn't harass. The only difference between myself and everyone walking by was my tanner skin and dark hair. This place is extremely elitist and a bit racist, and although my husband and I were considering buying a place, we would never go back to this judgmental and highbrow environment. How they can turn a beautiful public lake into a private exclusive community Is baffling to us. Unless you own a house there and have bought into their tiered lake access privileges, do not waste your time. read more

I came up to Lake Arrowhead to get out of Los Angeles to hike and use the bike trails at SkyVillage. For whatever reason a lot of the trails had their access blocked or were closed and it looked like some where done by the people that lived by the trail. We went to visit the village and it was pretty lackluster. Food options were pretty bad and there wasn't much else to see. You also can't get lake access without owning property. Our last option was skyvillage and we ended up not being able to rent bikes because they have very few. I feel like they swindled us. All in all not a great tourist destination or even easily accessible for someone trying to get out in nature. read more

The lake is privately owned and this is most definitely a very unwelcome Twin Peaks vibe that you get from everyone around here. We made the error of walking (with permission) around the lake area, and the vile looks you get say it all. The visitor center is another joke within a joke, providing almost no information of value. The lake itself is ok to look at but nothing is overly charming here. It's sadly a very LA experience. Plus, you can't really use the lake for anything since it's all private. Great vacation spot in June. Due to the elevation it gets warm enough to be hot on your skin and make you wear sunblock but there is plenty of breeze to cool you off. There are museums, shopping, hiking, and water activities to enjoy. We stayed at an Airbnb which got us into the Beach Club which was a nice private beach. As I love the beach this is a nice option for those wanting something different but still wanting to lay out and enjoy the rays but without the traffic of a normal coast beach. Less walking and close parking. The temp was in the mid 80s on a hot day. Cute shops and restaurants to enjoy and friendly people. Definitely stop bybthe visitor center and look for Dr. Witty at the arboretum. He is sure to give you a ton of musts in the area! I'll definitely be back as it is only 7-8 hour drive from Tucson, Az. read more

If your afraid of heights the drive is impossible, SERIOUSLY THIS DRIVE UP THE MOUNTAIN AND DOWN IS TERRIBLE, when you do get there the streets are impossible to navigate, there is NO cell signal, the roads are very narrow and dangerous, if you want to actually see the lake good luck they are dominated by multi million dollar homes, there is no access to the lake when you get there ! If you look at the other yelps you will see that they NOTE this is a private lake and there is no access for the public. MOST HORRIBLE PLACE IVE EVER BEEN !!!!!!!!! Here's what our host said when asked about lake side trail access (NOT EVEN THE LAKE ITSELF) "It's always been a private lake but before pandemic we were able to let friends, family, guests use our "rights" It's been super strange ever since and on a daily basis no one knows what's going on anymore. This summer they had a guest visitor center open where guests could buy a day or week pass to use members card access as long as they gave email and member registered them and they agreed to a bunch of rules, like carrying card and ID at all times, etc. but they shut that office down as the procedures were so complicated and everyone was confused." I've never been anywhere that was so simultaneously run down and demanding of your money. The only thing to do there as a tourist is their shopping center and that is as close to the lake as you're gonna get. There are no sidewalks, expect to drive everywhere (where gas prices are exceeding 7 dollars) Expect your meals at a restaurant to take 2 hours where you will receive subpar service. Its just way too busy and and the people too uppity for how small of a place in the mountains it is. read more

It's a beautiful place we wanted to get away from the big City. Once I got to the hotel that I was staying at the receptionist was very nice and the hotel was beautiful l. But once we went to the market I got a unwelcoming vibe from everyone. I'm Hispanic and my husband is Asian so I am use to the stares but this was too much. As much as I hate LA traffic LA is so diverse and that's what makes it beautiful.
