I had a great stay here. The rooms were really spacious and nice, and there were really nice lake views. Some of the rooms have balconies/porches, some open right to the outside like a motel, and some are just regular hotel rooms, plus theres a section where they allow dogs, so theres a lot of options. There's a nice sandy beach right outside, which was probably the best part. At breakfast they had coffee, juice, frozen waffles, toast, bagels, hardboiled eggs, muffins etc. There were biscuits and Gravy too There's a coffee shop and party store (with an ice cream counter!) Basically in the parking lot, and a lot of nearby restaurants, even within walking distance. read more

This place has potential. It's obvious they sunk a bunch of money into updates. The furniture is new, new floors and the only staff member I spoke with was very friendly and helpful. Newer A/C unit was cold! The view was great and choices of amenities are in walking distance. The room was clean including bedding which I'm guessing is new. All in all a comfortable stay. I'd go back. Now in my room, the curtains didn't cover the window and that's really my only concern. read more

We stayed for 4 days last week with a group of people celebrating a birthday and we couldn't be happier. The rooms were large and well-appointed. Our bathroom was recently updated and it was perfect! Our room opened up into the indoor pool area and another door opened out to the lake. They have a large party tent erected just outside the pool area and close to the lake. It was perfect for an imperfect weather day. We also rented a pontoon boat and spent a day on Lake Cadillac. The general manager and staff were fantastic. Although very short-staffed, they went out of their way to accommodate us. Please don't take the negative reviews to heart. This place has been undergoing a drastic change/remodel and the older posts reflect the problems that are in the past. I strongly recommend this hotel!!!! read more

The rooms were clean, but the blinds were not good. You could see right into our room. They did address the best they could right away. We were disappointed that for the size of the room there weren't any tables or chairs. Also you would think that a "resort" would have a coffeemaker, but there wasn't one. We figured we could get our coffee at the continental breakfast that was advertised, but there wasn't one. When I called I was told that they don't have one during the Winter. The website does not indicate this disclaimer. In fact, there were several references that eluded that there was a breakfast during the Winter. Seems like false advertising. read more

My family and I stayed 1 night on Aug 28. We booked 2 rooms and we all enjoyed our stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable, check in/out was quick and easy, and the employees were friendly. I thought the price of the rooms were reasonable for a Saturday night in the summer. The resort is still undergoing some renovations - the door still locked with a key, not by card or electronically, the bathroom in the lobby had loose tile and old fixtures - I look forward to seeing the completed product. The beach was small but the view of Lake Cadillac is beautiful. We will be back. read more

Just arrived at this place tonight to go snowmobiling, the room was so dirty that I went into an allergic reaction, like I would to cats. The place had broken water pipes and was very run down. There was even dirty tissue on the microwave. We asked for a refund. At first they said yes then as the night progressed they tried to strong arm us and did not want to refund the money even though we did not stay there. I have stayed here in the past but would never recommend this place to anyone!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!! read more

If older furnishings don't bother you and a little bit of dirt than this place is fine. It's not the cleanest of The dirtiest. It's definitely somewhere in between. I like to tilt toward a cleaner environment as opposed to updated. I could tell that once upon a time this was a great place. It has all the makings to be great. The land it sits on is beautiful. They just need to invest in their investment... Like other posts I will agree this place is very outdated. I've stayed in many hotels across the country and this one... Was one of the grossest ones. It just looked and smelled dirty. I'm not a snobby traveler. I'm a budget traveler and I understand what comes with budget traveling... But motel 6 and the super 8 are five stars compared to this place. First, it's overpriced. So basically it's not budget traveling. No one should pay over 50 dollars for these rooms, if that. I was placed in a room underneath "the club". When asked if I could move they tried to up charge me 25 more dollars a night. That would have made it almost 400 bucks for three nights... Um. No. Thank you. I already don't want to pay the 300 I did. The doors are key opened. Old handles, which is no big deal. But it just didn't feel secure. It felt like every time I turned the handle it was going to fall off. I also didn't feel comfortable leaving anything of value in the room. I don't know how to fully convey my feelings about this place. The word that comes to mind is Dirty with a capital D. The most disgusting part about the room was the carpet. I didn't even want to walk on it with my feet. I had to wear flip flops. It was a weird dampness... I don't care if the room is outdated but I do care if a place is clean. I should say that this was the ONLY place within an hour of traverse that was open and under 110 bucks a night. I wanted a clean, quiet place to stay, but I didn't get any of that. It's sad that I had to go buy ear plugs and a blanket because of the noise level and the fact that I didn't want to get under the covers... I slept on top of the bedspread. As I was writing this review a bug crawled across my shirt while I was laying in bed... Yep. Bugs. Not bed bugs but an insect nonetheless. Throughout the night I kept wondering why I was so hot. Welp. Inspector gadget has cracked the case! Basically the AC turns on for five minutes and then never again. Ok. Not true. In about 20/30 minutes it came back on for five minutes. For a brief moment I thought I had to put in quarters to make it work like in the movies. Annoying Highlights: -The constant people (drunk and sober) walking through the halls and slamming the doors by the stairs of "the club" - outside of the room. -The room does get cleaned but depending on who the cleaning person is will depend on if it gets cleaned. A lady slipped a note under the door in the mornings and said that she wasn't coming back to clean the room. However I was just leaving the room for the day and let her know that I was leaving so she could clean. Nope. She just didn't bother. -One mini bottle of shampoo. It was enough to wash the hair of a small keebler elf. I had to go buy shampoo and conditioner, which was fine. -The price and up charge for a dirty 1970s room. -The Smell of mildew and mold that may now be forever ingrained into my clothes and possibly my skin. -The tissue paper walls. If you want an intimate setting with strangers this is your place. Basically the walls are so thin you can hear everyone's conversation and quite possibly their individual breaths. Probably one of the saddest parts about this stay is that it kind of crushed my childhood fantasy. When I was a kid driving in the backseat of my parents blue Ford van I would always know we are close to my grandparents cabin when I saw The Sands Resort. The name makes it seem glamorous and elite. A members only place that if you had the jacket you could bask on the beach in your own little paradise. Where all the drinks had little umbrellas in them and Jimmy buffet played all night long. Pretty much a dump. But it's what's available for a last-minute stay on a holiday weekend when you have a dog with you. We booked a balcony room online and they called and said it was unavailable and "upgraded" us to a poolside room. And they mean poolside--the pool is literally four steps outside your door. The first room? The wood frame around the deadbolt on the inside door (to pool) was completely blown out. It looked like it had been kicked in. Told the front desk and they were completely surprised. They moved us to new room. So the second room? The deadbolt on the inside door (to pool) didn't engage--the latch just spun freely 360°. Seriously? It was the last room so it was that room or try finding a hotel in another city. Old everything. Carpet. Paint. Flooring. It smelled old. Only one power outlet in main room that we could access (one was completely dead). Water out of bathroom faucet was orange/brown until you let it run a few minutes. I honestly didn't feel unsafe, but if I had been alone it would have been a huge problem. read more

Disaster! May 25, 2018. Paid $135.00 Drove 14 hours from Virginia, checked in, walked into the room & was in disbelief! The pictures show it all. I walked back to the lobby to get a refund & all I got was bullied by the manger & told the room was nonrefundable. What a joke! I gave the manager 6 days to do the right thing & they didn't refund my money. So now I am going to put the review on every website I can so noone else has to deal with this disaster of a so called "resort". I was told by multiple people in the community what happened & their response was the resort was getting ready to be demolished, wish I would if known this BEFORE we prepaid for the stay. read more

We had travelled 4 hours & rented a boat for most of the day. incredibly disappointing. Their reasoning was they were short staffed, which we understand completely, but if you have guests waiting - why aren't you cleaning THOSE rooms first? No partial refund or ANYTHING offered. I usually don't write reviews, but this time I will make an exception! We had a 36 man golf package that included a night's stay at The Sands Resort in Cadillac, MI on Saturday, June 4, 2016. After golfing 36 holes at Eldorado Golf Course (which is excellent) we ventured over to get our rooms. Needless to say the parking lot could use some repair. Then, we walked inside to find a guy chewing out the gal behind the desk. I thought to myself, "Oh boy!" When we were finally helped, we were given keys to our rooms. I haven't stayed in a hotel/motel in 20 years that had keys. Our rooms were in the other building, no big deal to walk 150 feet. As we walked in to the other building I noticed the concrete steps were not to building standards. Then the hallway carpeting was coming loose all up and down the hallway. As we went down the hallway the window facing west had been scratched in and graffiti was written into the tinting of the window that was also fogged. I couldn't wait to see our room! Once inside the TV was probably 15 years old and a 19". Unlike our buddy's TV that didn't work. The beds were very soft and should have been replaced 5 years ago, Thank goodness the sheets smelled clean! The bathroom had an excessive amount of caulk around the sink and tub. Our toilet was in need of repair since when you flushed, the handle would stick and all the water would drain out thus making a fairly loud noise like a garden hose was running somewhere. Also it was a child height toilet and very low to the ground. Lastly, there was not an exhaust fan in the bathroom. The towels did smelled clean! That night there were many people at the pool and they were very boisterous. Needless to say, we got about 6 hours sleep and had to be up early for our next round of golf. The night attendant was a gentlemen about our age (60) and he was doing his best to get out the continental breakfast. The biscuits and gravy were cold and I used the microwave in the kitchen to heat up. OMG, the kitchen was so gross! Wish I wouldn't have seen that, all the grease all over the place, the hair on the floor and wet smelly rags on the floor. I'll never come back to stay there EVER! I told the guy who organized it that I would rather pay $20-$30 more to stay at the Best Western (where we had stayed once before) or another hotel than stay in this place again! Sincerely, T. We have been coming to Cadillac for over 35 years and sad to say(as others have) this place is in a PRIME location, and I "do NOT understand" WHY the owners do not "keep this place up". ...We are now retired in the area, and from "before you walk in the front entrance", it it "falling apart. I think, the only thing "keeping them open, is "tourists who book "sight unseen", and then they are "stuck there" because we don't have many motels/hotels. This place YEARS ago, was a "hot spot. A great location, nice indoor pool, with a great restrurant overlooking the pool.The restrurant had "high end food, good food". Everything here now, as of January 2014, is "OLD, Broken, dirty, I would "not think to eat here, just walking in their restrurant area. PLEASE, owners, Sell it to someone who will "put money into this great location", as "This could be a "goldMine, "really". Put tsome of the money you make every weekend( we drive by and see parking lot FULL)...Spend some of that money "updating". Cadillac is turning into a HOT spot for tourists "all year round". We have everything here now.Winter fall and summer. Water surrounds this town, ski lodges, fishing, close to Traverse City, Lake Michigan...Give and be thankful "we are NOT a dying up North town, FIX up these hotels and Restrurants in our beautiful city! In the last year alone, major stores have come in for shopping.Thus, making it even "more attractive to stay here. Lets "NOT lose our restrurants/hotels". Staff was friendly and chatty. View of the lake from the room balcony is quite nice. Old-style TV with plenty of cable channels. There's a very small private beach with a simple Tiki bar. Everything else sucked. This place is perfect for you if you like to drink a lot, can't smell very well, and have low expectations. Spiders and flying bugs are to be expected if you're on a lake. Wi-fi? Not gonna happen. The restaurant was deserted; the decor has a "tall ships" nautical theme. No elevator for 2nd-floor rooms. Fish & chips dinner was VERY dry, tough and chewy (but the fries were hot) -- I should have gone next door to McDonald's. Our room door had been kicked in and patched. Bed was firm to the point of being stiff. Lots of noise from other rooms and the toilet (which needed to be cleaned). Everything looks like it's right out of the 1960's. Housekeeper came by in the morning collecting used towels because they didn't have enough. We paid $130/night, which was about double what it was worth. Free continental breakfast was corn flakes, Cheerios, orange juice, biscuits, bread, bagels and a toaster. The only reason we ended up here was because a "tournament" had filled up all the rooms on M-131 and we worried we wouldn't find a place to sleep. Needless to say, we won't be back. Have not been here in 30 years. Used to be the ultimate place for fine dining and a place to stay. I am sorry to say that it is no longerthe case. The night before we left they called us and said that the kitchen would be closed until further notice. We elected to go anyway because there are restuarants close by. Got the jacuzzi room that is the last corner unit on the end and sits about 5 feet from the lake. One whole wall is a patio walkout that looks over the lake and the other is a large picture window that looks over the lake, just a beautiful view. Unfortunitly that was where it ended. This place has really been neglected and not maintained and it is tired, old and run down. Old furniture that is missing drawers and needs repair and stain. The wall light switches have been removed so you have 3 floor lamps instead. 2 of the 3 had broken knobs so you could not turn them on. The jacuzzi is not the greatest and the wall mirror around it has a large crack. The entry door has a three quarter inch gap all the way around it and you can see to the hallway. The main room needs repainting. The rooms were just cleaned before we got there and we found 2 dirty used wash cloths in the bathroom. The floor of the room above you creaks when walked on louder than you could ever believe a floor could creak and when someone fills the jacuzzi in another room it sounds like you are filling yours, you actually have to crank the sound up on the tv or it will get drowned out by the noise. The worst was the bathroom. There was an exhaust fan but it did not work and the bathroom showed real problems because of this. The tiles in the whole room showed a lot of mildew. The tub and walls looked like they were chalked by a 5 year old (thick and caked on). There was considerable rust and calcium stains on any metal in the room. There is a white suspended ceiling that is badly water stained. The mirror on the wall is chipped and cracked. The bathroom door which is wood is badly warped and semi rotted on the inside. You also cannot open or close the bathroom door without having to lift the toilet seat and cover because the door wont clear the toilet if you don't. And the ice maker was also out of order. The only reason we stayed was because of the view and the lake access, but it is not enough for us to go back. At least the employees are super nice. I know it's "up north" (i lived in cadillac for many years) and things are "rustic" and older and I like that, but even i have a limit. Especially when it is $125.00 a night and there are cheaper and more livable alternatives around. Reputations live in the past, well so does Cadillac Sands Resort. When decorated, wooden steering wheels and organic ropes were cutting edge. Technology has improved materials used on ships, but updates have stayed on M-115 headed elsewhere! 1970's built a reputation for this place that was grand enough that it still lures the unsuspecting traveler from decades before. I should have listened to my wife & the reviews/ratings of travelers. Obviously there will be disgruntled reviews that only hate. There has to be some redeeming value in Every place. Here, the room heat worked great! It was near 85 when we opened our door. The key only works for the handle lock, so security is a concern. The hallway doesn't have any heat. The passage between buildings has 6+" of snow/ice build up, with an ice rink beneath it. No attempt to melt the ice, or the ice puddle on the steps. No ADA access to most parts, with most doors 26". The breakfast was constant with all other reviews, a waste of time. We got there to find no juice, no milk, no plates, no cups, no silverware, no gravy, almost thawed biscuits, less thawed mini muffins were brought out after asking for something. After asking a second time, gravy was prepared (thawed and microwaved) to just above room temp. The roll away had to be fixed before the child could sleep in it. Two shampoos and a facial bar but no conditioner, well, they didn't use it in the 60's I guess. If you only need a place to recover from a long day on the snowmobile trails, great. You'll be fine here. If you want anything else, try elsewhere. read more

If you only like high end or used to corporate hotels this is not your place. I do like it. I think it has a neat atmosphere along with some other amenities and location that make it a cool stop. Yes it isn't up to today's standards but I have stayed in way worse. Sheets and rooms are clean. It's on the lake. Relaxing. Bar. Indoor pool. And night club. Most of these reviews seem to echo my initial feelings. The place has not changed, run down, smells a bit musty and still has the 1970's decor. That being said the owners appear to be listening and are updating. Main halls and entry are being painted, the pool was closed for updating-it was also being painted and refurbished. We commented that they didn't even have phones in the room! Well, new phone system was being installed according to the sign at the desk. The shower was wonderful, heat worked great. The view was wonderful if you look toward the lake, lol. They also rent snowmobiles,boats,kayaks so We probably will go back at some point. read more

We stayed in Cadillac Sands Resort, on our trip to Traverse City due to the great cost. Fair warning you get what you pay for. Very dark and dingy inside, with under construction signs on almost every door, even though nothing looked like it was being worked on. We looked around our double queen bed room and found no toilet paper and the hair dryer was missing... No biggie. We walked out onto the balcony to find the door and frame being home to some nasty spiders... Oh well we won't use the balcony. We decided to take a peek at the beds since things were a little under par. There was a dead spider in the sheets on one of the beds. We spoke with the main desk and he apologized, he upgrades us to the Jacuzzi suites. Thinking this should be the best they have we were still unimpressed. No bugs, but the room had stains on the carpet, there was damage to the bathroom tile, and the tv would not work. My brother in the room next to us, had issues with the A.C. and his toilet would not work properly. He called the front desk and a young lady tried to fix it with a rubber band and a paperclip, along with a warning that if it did not work there was a toilet in the lobby. Overall a very underwhelming experience. Do not make the mistake we did, do not waste your time or money here. Give yourself peace of mind and stay somewhere else for that extra 50 dollars. read more

Wow! Should've read the reviews before staying here. Wedding hosts made several reservations because it was 'cheap' but big mistake. Do not even look like you might try this place. Dirty, old, musty, litter, everything broken or stuck or sticky. Watched cleaning-girl viewing permanently-attached phone in one hand while other hand aimlessly attempted undirected passes at wiping a sink. Other girl at front desk with feet up on said desk also playing with phone while ignoring guests (prisoners?) passing through. Toilet ran 24 hours a day though it did offer a sort of babbling brook background, just enough to mandate turning up the volume on our humongous 17" TV. Take the gypsy's warning folks - the sign out front tells you their best and only feature - "65 feet of lakefront!" (Dodge the goose bombs, though!) I have never written a review before but I feel compelled to echo all of the posts here. I was swayed by the location and website and did not take the time to read the reviews. A mistake I will not make in the future. Everything I've read here - I have experienced. In addition, my wife and son are also with me and EVERY DAY there are only 2 sets of towels and every day I go to the front desk. Carpet in the room, hallways, and stairs keep getting dirtier every day - no vacuuming has been heard, which is kind of odd for a hotel/motel, right?!? Also - trash cans haven't been emptied and I have twice had to go to the front desk for new bags. Oh yeah - I had to go down because the telephone doesn't work! I arrived late Friday night to a poorly lit, not very visible signage business front that doesn't entice a warm and inviting atmosphere. The whole complex is under full blown remodel, which is fine, but nothing is done at all. Every facet of the projects are all open-ended and not complete. ***At the very least finish your office/desk area so it's not a closet that reeks of cigarettes for your customers*** The lobby is completely in shambles and the ice machine area must have been so bad, the employee told me " I'll get it for you, don't want you tripping all over the construction going on". The room, well... it's a room. One employee told us that the rooms are basically done, other than replacing the beds, which is false. The door is so tight to open/close that either I'm struggling to shut it or slamming it and loudly creating noise. The sofa inside is disgusting, might as well get rid of it and build an actual closet for your guests things. The carpet is new(er) but the edges and transitions aren't finished. The tv is new, but doesn't fit in the existing cabinet and sits on the luggage rack. Also, the cable is not HD (which is fine) and is very blurry due to them setting it on stretch to fit the screen. Just keep it in 4x3 and it'll look better. The lamp shades are dirty, do not know what is on them and they look frayed. Window is dirty, track of window is filthy and outside of window has so many dead bugs on or around it, makes me wonder if anyone cleans it up ever. Bathroom, one word, tiny. Toilet sits very low, and at least ours in 129 doesn't stop running all night. Opened up tank to take a look, and the fixture is all wrapped in plastic bag and needs repair/replace work. Barely any counter top space for your toiletries and shower is ok minus the fact that the towel rack is inside the shower. (Make it hard to keep towels dry, especially since there's really no other place to keep them in the bathroom) sink drain is dirty, looks to need a deep clean. Bathroom overall is so small compared to the sleeping space, should be redesigned to have more room and shrink down sleeping/living area instead. Best part of this stay is we are spending most of the daytime off sight. I'm being pretty hard, especially because they ARE updating some stuff, but it's really inconvenient for your guests when they do not have facilities capable of making the experience enjoyable. Would not recommend location in it's current state, would have to see how it differs once construction is done. But there is a very long road to go for that to even happen. I gave one star, and it only gets that because the lake view is so serene and calming and beautiful. read more

Went here for Mother's Day weekend with my wife, kids and mother-in-law. Our choice for this place was due to the "Mothers Day Buffet Special" at $17.95 with 10% off for law enforcement discount with a menu that consisted of carved roast beef, baked chicken, tilapia, medium salad bar and dessert. Our meal was not what we envisioned; dry chicken, over cooked tilapia and a salad bar that was deficient. Soup was out of a crock pot that seemed like it came out of my neighbors kitchen. They did not honor the 10% off as they had stated and wanted to charge my 9 year old an adult meal price! I was not happy with the quality of the meal (the roast was good but the man carving gave such small pieces and I had to ask for more), the facility looks like something out of a movie from the 60's! I should've known better when there weren't that many cars in the parking lot; a sure sign that something is amiss. This was our first time but certainly the LAST! read more
