I didn't feel like I was speeding but sure enough there was a lady police officer standing in the street and flagged me over, pulled me into the Remax real estate office parking lot. I felt sick as I remember belatedly, that the speed limit was 25mph!!..which had surprised me one day when I noticed how low it was...ANYHOW. This lady police officer, I think her name was Rodriguez...stood on the passenger side of my truck and I gently reached for my registration/insurance above my sun visor and then looked at her and said "I am getting my drivers license out of my left front pocket"..and she thought I said "I was HOT"..which meant I had a gun....instead of getting ALL EXCITED..like some cops on YouTube, she calmly said "if you are carrying its no BIG DEAL, I would just ask you to stand out of the car"..just like that...no PANIC...." Imagine that..? And she took my license calmly as Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, said politely "give me a moment please" and went into her cruiser...checked me out. Reminded me that the speed fine for 36 mph in a 25mph was $200 some odd Bucks!!! Wished me well,....smiled broadly and pulled the next guy over....she let me go!!! So, what is my point? WE NEED MORE police officers like this!!! Thanks so much for doing a stand up professional job, reminding me of the law, being polite and earning my RESPECT.

I don't think I can find the words to say how grateful I am that not only the kids got this opportunity, but the parents as well. I am truly amazed at this police department. How they "do it" is beyond me! Let me tell you why... Do you know the population of St. Augustine, Florida is right at 14K? WHOA! I know...right? It seems bigger than that. But you know what?...that means they have a very small police department since the population is low. Let's think about that for a minute...HELLO!...this is a tourist town!!! Doesn't it seem like you always see an officer somewhere? Next question...how many people do you think visit St. Augustine every year? Yep...I guessed a million too! But it's 7 million! Yes, 7,000,000 people! How does this police force keep up? They are humpin'..that's how! They have a very small force and it goes without saying they are understaffed. The next time you see a St. Augustine police officer take some time to thank them for all they do because it's not easy with these numbers. They are good, but numbers are thin. As for the station, it is very small. But we truly enjoyed learning about day to day operations there and learning how they juggle their schedules to make it work for the people (you and me that is). After all, someone has to always be on duty to protect and defend. We all thought it was cool to see the interrogation rooms, the evidence lockers and especially the vehicles. The bullet proof vest were a big hit too. I, and we, appreciated the educating tour of the police department by Officer Samson, the time he dedicated to us and making us feel very welcome. Sure, it is quiet here at times with little going on so people who are used to breaking laws elsewhere without problems can run into them here. Depending on who you talk to you'll get a different opinion from people about the police here. If you're talking to a local then they know that since things are low crime here they can pay attention to smaller offenses like going 15 over the speed limit. Most people though, whether visiting or just going around town understand that so there aren't any problems. Every now and then though you'll get your ear screamed off by someone with a bad experience, I've heard many. Anything from a coworker running a stop sign in a neighborhood, to speeding and plowing through cross walks while they are full of people. Those situations should speak for themselves though. Every officer I interacted with has been very understanding while still holding you to the law and that's what matters. For the few people that do only have complaints and ranting and yelling about them...well...I think we know those people just don't like being told they are the ones in the wrong. Thank you for keeping us safe.

Today, Deputy Cook responded when I called from out of town because our security cameras showed a lady walking around my house taking pictures. Deputy Cook responded very quickly and checked over my property, front and back, to ensure that the property was secure and undamaged. He also made contact with the lady on the video and warned her to stay away from our property. Sadly, we have had too many incidents in this neighborhood and have been staying elsewhere. Each time we have had an incident, the deputies have responded professionally and assured us that they are fair and will keep us safe.

They work there off duty which means they are actually team members and paid by Universal and not OPD. So if you are a victim of battery by a guest, Universal tells them not to charge the guest an look the other way. Being employed by Universal is a major conflict of interest. A police officer can be charged with failure to act for witnessing a battery and doing nothing. But, that is highly unlikely to happen too because the whole agency is corrupt. Very disappointed with the traffic enforcement occurring during afternoon pickup at Ventura…read moreElementary. On August 19, my mother was in the established line of vehicles picking up children when Deputy ID #2464 pulled her out of the line and issued her a $166 citation. Another woman directly in front of her was also pulled out and cited, while numerous other vehicles participating in the same pickup traffic were allowed to continue. We understand and support traffic enforcement, especially around schools where children's safety is extremely important. Our concern is that enforcement should be clear, fair, and consistent for everyone. If vehicles participating in the school pickup line are violating a traffic law, parents and grandparents should be given clear direction and the rule should be enforced consistently--not against only a few vehicles while others in the same situation continue through the line. We will also be bringing our concerns regarding this incident and Deputy #2464 to the appropriate supervisor through the Sheriff's Office.
