It features two well-maintained fenced-in tennis courts that are open to the public, nice rolling fields to play in, and a playground with lots of equipment for all-ages. The park has excellent drainage, and almost never gets muddy or buggy. There are no lights, except for those from the neighboring houses, so be sure to arrive well before dusk. There also isn't any dedicated parking for the park, and the parallel street parking along Cloverdale is a bit limited (probably 6 cars can fit). If it had a small parking lot on Eastwood, or if they widened Cloverdale to accommodate easier parking, this would be my favorite park in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. Still, it's in my top 3, thanks to the quality amenities and fantastic upkeep by the Highland Park Park District crew.

What a nice little community…read more Never knew this but most parking in Libertyville's downtown area has time limitations. It's a surprise especially when the sign indicating the time limitation is posted within a flower bed. Nice for residents, but hard to notice for passers by; trying to find suitable parking to get a bite to eat. Who the heck uses 15 minute parking properly and what's the point in having it in places that are far from most destinations? 1st parking violation is $20, if you wait 7 days that doubles. Not sure what happens after the doubling. Tickets can be paid by cash or check. Currently they are in the process to see if they can get a credit card machine. If you're here often but not a resident, you might inquire about obtaining a parking permit, the annual rate is $10 and allows you to park in spaces found all around their "downtown". But this information may be flawed since Metra parking for a six month period runs around $250 for a non-resident. In case you get to the Police station after hours, you can drop your payment in the identified mail box outside. $20 is better than the standard ticket price in Chicago and less hassle.

During the weekday, there may also be school buses here filled with students at the nature center. I come here for birdwatching and find that early in the morning or right before sunset are my favorites times. Just be sure to head back to the lot before it gets dark, as the only lights are near the Rivershire Park nature center building.

The Town of Fort Sheridan is unique on the north shore due to its proximity to the beach, the lake, the forest preserve, its landmark status, walking paths, historical significance, stopping point for migratory birds, and more. Things I've seen: the thin red line at the horizon before sunrise which blooms into a red and purple sky; coyotes sauntering down the street at dusk; black and brown squirrels tossing nuts from the trees; hawk circling overhead and the early warning system of screeching bluejays; rocky pebble beach with thundering waves; the lake which can be a cold grey or cobalt or Caribbean blue; walkers, runners or racing jersey wearing bicycle packs; eye contact with a family of deer silently watching; red fox scrambling out from under a bush; technicolor display of leaves in the fall; butterflies and dragonflies in the meadow; other moments that may have significance to me but more than 100 years ago someone is standing where I'm standing and experiencing the exact same thing.

The course went through a pretty horrible redesign many years ago. To build a range, they redesigned the old 9th into a short and sharp dogleg left (now the finishing hole), littered it with bunkers and ended up with a hole that is completely inconsistent with the rest of the golf course. The new 18th green and fairway are often speckled with range balls as they simply do not have space for a range and a golf hole in the same area. Lousy finishing hole on an otherwise okay track.
