Great selection of items, and very big. The prices I think are fair. The workers are not very friendly, we walked in at 4:10 pm two workers looked as us walking in then turned their head and continued on with what they were doing. I went upstairs to browse and another worker was folding, looked at me, and then continued on with what she was doing. I finally said hi then she replied "hi there" and hurriedly walked away. The store was not busy, there were maybe 5 customers in total. I did not feel comfortable in the store. read more

This is the largest shop in town and has the broadest selection: clothing, both souvenir and otherwise; books, including local & regional authors and topics; lots of outdoor gear; dishes, pottery & glassware; toys; jewelry; and various standard tchotchkes for tourists. There is a modest selection of specialty foodstuffs, but most of it is not produced locally. We ended up here on both our first and last days in town, and I think this is a good strategy for souvenir shopping in Grand Marais. You can get a sense of what is available, then if you don't find something in any of the other, more specialized shops nearby (some of them quite good), you can come back here to fill in the gaps. Caveat: don't trust their online posted hours no matter the source. I saw different hours between Yelp, Google, and the actual store...and even different hours were actually observed (at least on one day) than were posted on the front door. When I travel I like to bring home items unique to the area or are made by locals. Lake Superior Trading Post fulfilled that need. I bought huckleberry jam, huckleberry chocolate bars and local wild rice (harvested by canoe!!). I also bought DEET-free bug spray that I forgot to pack. The store has a wide selection of items for outdoor adventures from clothes to camelpak bags and reservoirs. There's a little coffee shop just next door if you need a perk up while browsing. read more

In the midst of the downtown Grand Marais shopping district, the Lake Superior Trading Post is all you'd expect -- a large store with hard wood floors that creak just the right amount, loaded down with all kinds of items, from food to books to collectibles to gadgets. We really enjoyed looking around and especially found the section of dog-related outdoor stuff really fun and inviting (it's in the back corner of the stores pretty much under the stairs. There was a wide array of everything outdoors, from thermarest pads to Sealine wet bags to sleeping bags, etc. There were also a number of unique gift items, crafty things and other fun shopping upstairs. We found some really unique greeting cards (mega bonus) and really liked browsing. However, I have to say that trading post does not equal discount shopping. I don't know if that's an unrealistic expectation or not, but I felt prices here were at least MSRP if not higher, and as a result did not buy much. However, we did have fun looking and count this as a cool funky shop worth visiting. read more

the people that work there do not seem to like tourists. they are snappy and even if you are just ADJUSTING your mask they yell at you. customer service is NOT their strong suit. with that said, i've been going for years and their store has the most fun minnesota stuff and local gems -- LOVE the pottery and the jewelry and the uffdah mugs and fun mn swag. they have a GREAT sale corner on the top floor to the left. i've found fun purses and clothing and hats. they have several different kinds of candy and DELICIOUS caramels. it's a must see store in duluth, just don't expect super friendly people there. read more

Great stuff. They have a sale section. If you want to go backpacking or camping they have all you need. They are a little on the expensive side . Sell all the high end and designer brands of outdoor gear. Wate filters, camp food, dog sledding stuff sleeping bags, tents, shoes and boots. you name it they have it. The original one burned down. There was actually a Yelp check in for a bag of free taffy, and it was good. As you walk in there is a display of books, some touristy, MN writers, many are familiar. They have all your needs and guilty pleasures, even wool socks in the summer. I was looking for earmuffs, which they didn't have. They have a handy bathroom and they can use another if they find a spot. Lots of helpful staff around. It's right on the lake so you can sit on the porch and enjoy that. I was there during the Fisherman's Picnic and they have food vendors all around that spot. read more

They close at five during the peak of the fall season--earlier than everyone around them. Have heard it's because they can't get cheap foreign labor and do not pay enough to get local help. Ben Franklin across the street has some similar items for much lower cost. read more

Great place to window shop! If the prices weren't so insanely high I would routinely buy something there aside from the emergency purchase (oh I forgot to pack X). Great location, neat building, but too too expensive!! Let me add to this..... So after I post my original review above I receive a private message from one of the owners who attempted to argue with me about my review in regards to pricing and made negative comments about "the cities". Hello!?!?!? "The Cities" tourist/visitor $$ allow you to live and have a business there. This is now a 1 star rating (was a 3 star). Will never visit your store again. read more

This is a great place to go for camping gear and related books and accessories. However, it is really good merchandise, and you will pay a price for it. I came looking for some running pants, but was only able to find long underwear pants that were around $150 a pair. I went down the street to Joyne's Ben Franklin, and found just what I needed for less than $25. Perusing the wares at the Trading Post acquainted me with the wide selection they have of quality products for camping, including camping with your pet. They also have some clothing, toys, cookbooks, and so on. Just be aware that you are paying for the quality. read more

More than simply a tourist trap selling Grand Marais shirts and candles and whatnot, this place has EVERYTHING you could want or need for any camping experience. All manner of camping gear and equipment are for sale, down to the finer details for comfort and expert needs. Well staffed, the friendly employees are quite helpful amid the throngs that pack the place during peak season. If you're headed to the Boundary Waters and neglected to bring an important piece of your kit, this place will have it. Plenty of good stuff for mom & grandma, clothes, dishes, candles, and other tchotchkes, and various toys and candies for the kids. read more

They carry most anything you'll need for outdoor activities that you didn't expect to need when you started your trip. It's sleeting sideways in July and your waterproofing has failed, your boots were eaten by porcupines, that dehydrated "Mountain Chili" you tried last night filled your tent with poisonous gas and you need a quick replacement before your Isle Royale ferry leaves tomorrow... where are you going to go? Cute store with a perfect location. It's also quite necessary when hunting/fishing/camping/hiking/etc... up North. If you run out or need anything, I'm sure the Trading Post has it. Their prices aren't cheap, but comparable to a North Face Store or REI. The are located right on the bay of the lake. Lots of benches and tables are situated in front. You'll find crowds on nice Summer days watching the boats and water plane that gives rides ($75 ea for 1/2 hour!). Plus, they have a cute coffee shop just off the front-side of the store serving great coffee. read more

Whether you're there for camping gear (water purification, tents, gloves, walking sticks, fancy moisture-wicking camping underpants, etc), hiking gear (hats, socks, sandals), something warm to wear (Woolrich sweaters, Columbia fleece), a book to read while on the trail ("Birds of the North Woods") or some sort of home decor (upstairs) they really do have a pretty good selection. As others have noted, you do pay for it! But they've outlasted some other spots at the foot of the Gunflint Trail and they serve a need. They lose a star for price, but I do like the place. read more

Been coming here over the years and expect it to change and yet it hasn't. While it is clean and well organized(unlike other shops in Grand Marais) service and prices are not as great. I was looking at shoes and if someone had asked or checked in I may have bought a pair. Prices were extremely high. Average price for a pair of socks was $19. I love to look here but wish things were just slightly more affordable. read more

We make it a point to stop here when in Grand Marais. They have a huge selection of outdoor gear, local books and info as well as jewelry, crafts, toys, etc. This is a great store if you are looking for outdoor gear for dogs-boots, Musher's Secret, coats, etc. They really do have something for everyone. read more

Merchandise is fine, but it isn't updated often. The restroom was out of order so I stopped shopping & paid for the few items I already had in hand. However, the worst was the surly unpleasant young lady at the register who seemed ill-equipped to ring up purchases or interact with customers. It was quite apparent that she did not want to be there. My change and receipt was thrust into my hand so I put my bills in my billfold and my receipt in my sack. I never expect a "thank you" or "come again", but being pleasant, courteous or professional is always appreciated. The cashier then rang up my mother who also had problems with her. The cashier asked if she wanted a sack (for her card) & when she replied that she did, the young lady became irritated & threw it in the counter. She laid the receipt on the counter without a word. Please train/retrain your employees as this is completely unacceptable. read more

Very expensive and one staff member who said she was the manager (on a Sunday) was extremely rude and avoidant. I will not shop here again.
