Dr. Edward Lam is an exceptional physician who prioritizes his clients' care first and foremost. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, thoughtful, caring, personable, compassionate and deeply dedicated to his patients and staff. After my appointment this past Tuesday, I left feeling completely satisfied with the services provided. Dr. Lam always takes the time to listen and answer all of my questions and concerns. He was extremely empathetic when I explained to him I had lost my mother to cancer. The administrative and clinical experience was just as wonderful as the medical care. The receptionists and medical staff are incredibly friendly, customer service oriented, and really fast through checking me out. Unfortunately, I was running a little late to my appointment so I called to let the staff know; they kindly told me to drive safely and that it was okay. Scheduling an appointment is easy because the staff are so quick and on top of everything--they even already scheduled me for my next annual appointment for next year. Edward Lam is an awesome and smart doctor. When my right underarm was in pain, I checked in the ER. The doctor in the ER diagnosed me with UTI but my pipi wasn't sore. I kept trying to tell the ER doctors why is my underarm sore if you say it's my UTI. Wasted my time in the ER. I called Doctor Edward Lam the next day. Told him my pain and the lump under my armpit. He knew right away what I was talking about and it wasn't even UTI. It's like he knows the pain and symptoms without even going in the office to see him. Being a former patient of Dr. Howman Lam, imagine my excitement to learn his son has followed in his footsteps and has opened his own practice. As soon as I could, I switched over to Dr. Edward Lam as I wanted to support Lam Family Medicine and have a PCP that I could grow with. Off the bat, I recognized that his co-pay is higher than what I am accustomed to but that was not a dealbreaker. I appreciated that Dr. Edward Lam was coming into the field freshly educated and with more up-to-date knowledge to better serve his patients. Though it was an additional cost to myself, I also appreciated his usage of lab work in his assessments (which would ironically be a bane to me in the future). It is bittersweet to write this review as I believe it may be a one-off incident, but it was one that has caused me to feel uncomfortable seeing Dr. Edward Lam again. In April 2021, I feel that Dr. Edward Lam misdiagnosed me based on lab results alone; I do not feel he asked me enough questions (i.e. lifestyle - work, diet, physical activity, etc.) during this particular visit to thoroughly assess the situation & I feel he disregarded my self-report and attempt to advocate for what I believed was the issue (a sprained or dislocated thumb). To leave a doctor's office feeling confused, defeated, and disregarded is not something I've ever felt before and has made me doubt the validity of Dr. Edward Lam's medical opinion moving forward. (P.S., after an accidental bump to my thumb joint a week or so after being misdiagnosed, I heard a "pop" and my injury recovered subsequently, further negating Dr. Edward Lam's diagnosis.) I still believe Dr. Edward Lam has potential to be a great doctor, but just not for me personally as my trust has dissipated since then. I understand everyone is only human and will make mistakes once in awhile; however, my issue is that he did not even consider the possibility that my thoughts and beliefs could be correct and adamantly stated what he believed to be the root of the issue. There was no discussion had. He felt he was right based on the numbers on the lab work and that my self-report could not have possibly been the issue. As I have not been back to see Dr. Lam in 3 years since that appointment, I hope that he has improved his rapport-building skills with his patients, which includes actually listening patient self-reports and the possibility that the patient may actually be right. read more

I personally don't think they're all that bad. Maybe I'm biased because 1) I'm an MA for a different PCP, and 2) I'm young and relatively healthy, so don't require much past preventative care. Here's my short breakdown of my first two visits, hoping it doesn't change too much in the years to come: * Care: Dr. Lam is very knowledgeable, but not very personable. I'm fine with that for now, as I'm used to subpar care, so this is an upgrade, even if he doesn't really make eye contact or make light of any situations. However, practicing medicine is pretty heavily dependent on listening to your patient's concerns, and if I did have more serious concerns, I worry that he would brush them off. * Office: It's a little small, considering the amount of staff he has, but I think serves its purpose well enough. Papers could be a little more organized and away from the vitals-taking area, but I think that's just my opinion. * Wait: My first appointment, I was 30 minutes early, and was seen just in time! While I felt bad that they had to use more validation stickers on me, they were pretty efficient with that. Second appointment, I intentionally showed up at 1:30 on the dot and was seen at 2:15. Unfortunate, but I can confidently say I've seen worse. * Phones: they're very good about answering their phones and giving reminder calls the day before your appt. read more

I've been dreading to write this review because I've been with the Lam family since I was a kid. But from realizing the misdiagnoses, ignorance, and disrespect I received from this office while trying to get my dad better and up on his feet .. It was unacceptable. Long story short, if I continued to follow Dr. Lam's orders I don't think my dad would have gotten better. He would have gotten worse. I'm glad I trust my gut and decided to find a new PCP. First and foremost, If you need a referral to a specialist - Don't even bother to ask because this office, FOR SOME REASON, will not give you one. The amount of time's I've been given B.S excuses on why my father didn't need one was insane. From the receptionist saying "There's a lack of these specialist on the island" or Dr. Lam saying, "They won't do anything for you". But, when you finally get one they give you the worst one that is booked out for 6 months... The whole idea of referrals is to accurately DIAGNOSE your patients so that they can get the right care. And to give us one that is fully booked out fo 6 months?! I mean, would you want to continue to watch your father for 6 MORE MONTHS in pain? The worst of all is that they knew this office was fully booked out and didn't bother to help you find another one. Secondly, during this whole process we were being charged for the smallest things. We were charged a $20 copay for just filling out forms that was only 2 pages. But, when I called to request another form to be filled out the receptionist that I was on the phone with told me to just email it. That's when I started to question why we were being charged with the first paperwork. Eventually, the receptionist started to freak out, put me on mute without letting me know, then Dr. Lam started speaking out of no where. And what he said shook me to the core which was, "My time was used to fill out those forms thats why you were charged.. ". To me, that just showed me he has no empathy and money was a priority. I even spoke with my friends who also work in the healthcare field, and were applauded by his comment. I've watched my dad cry, suffer, and continuously fight through 3 months of agonizing mental and physical pain. I myself and my dad received no empathy from this office nor help. If I continued to stay with this office I don't know if my dad would have made it. After switching to a different office, we were able to find a diagnosis from seeing different specialists through referrals, never charged for paperwork, and our current PCP fought and made sure my dad got better. Now my dad is up on his feet, taking the right medications, healthy, and working like normal. This is honestly upsetting because I looked up to and trusted the Lam family since I was a kid. But in all honestly, this whole process made both my dad and I feel as if we were a burden. This is something you should never make your patients feel. read more

Dr. Lam misdiagnosed CANCER! My father had a nagging cough that wouldn't go away. Dr kept on trying different meds. After numerous visits and trying at least 5 different classes of meds, he still wouldn't let my father see a specialist. (My father has since been diagnosed with LUNG CANCER.) Dr. adamantly told us on multiple visits that it wasn't cancer. Despite repeated phone calls, the office manager, Erika refused to connect us to the Dr. saying that he was "too busy" and that we needed to book another appointment in order to "talk to him." My father was in his care for far too long when he should have been referred to a specialist far earlier. A competent primary care Dr. should know when to refer their patients to a specialist. My dad's faith in this Dr. may cost him his life. read more

If I could post zero stars, I would. I am on an extended visit and needed a physician for a controlled medication. I paid Dr. Lam over $200 for an initial visit. Dr. Lam neglected to inform me that he required a visit each and every month before writing a script. He claims he did tell me and has it in his notes, yet when I left his office, I had to sign a phone-in prescription permission document. This information is NOT INCLUDED in his written policy. His monthly visit would add $170 to my budget each month for fulfillment. No other doctor I have worked with has ever had such a requirement and it is absurd for someone who has a documented pharmaceutical record and ZERO claims of abuse. Dr. Lam is very timid and fearful over losing his license - why, I cannot imagine. VERY DISAPPOINTED and recommend you avoid this doctor. He's interested in your money before your health. read more

Dr. Lam was a very good doctor and the clinic's location was within walking distance from my previous employer. However, my 1 star review goes directly to the poor hospitality of the receptionist/office manager, Erika. My first encounter was regarding my insurance that was being charged. For some reason, their office was charging the insurance company which I no longer had. At one point, I had a primary (local) and secondary (military) insurance but got rid of the military insurance. I had a few prior appointments with Dr. Lam and saw that my insurance company processed the payments for those visits. I was never informed of a problem by their office or through my insurance company. I came to a later appointment and Erika was incredibly rude and accused my insurance company for processing and taking back the payments for those prior visits - which I had no idea happened. I completely understand the frustration, but blaming and accusing a patient for something that is way out of their control was wrong and unprofessional. At one point, Dr. Lam asked if everything was okay because he saw that I was frustrated and upset. I immediately called my insurance company after the appointment, which stated that it was an issue that their office should've handled themselves. I think this experience should've been a red flag for my future visits. My second and final encounter was scheduling for a tele-appointment about a month ago, because I was sick with COVID and needed a doctor's note for my employer. I spoke with Erika and explained my situation to her. She said that I needed to see Dr. Lam for the doctor's note, which was fine. She then asked what my insurance company was, which I confirmed. She then asked "when do you want to see him, because he's already booked for the rest of the week?" in a snippy tone. At this point, I was done and I told her that I would find another doctor and hung up. Based from the other reviews, it amazes me that the clinic continues to tolerate this type of unprofessionalism. I was lucky enough to find Dr. Lam's practice after joining a gym essay for the first time after lifetime with Kaiser. Finding a new doctor on your own can be daunting, particularly when you haven't done it before. Dr. Lam's staff was super helpful and available, and was able to get me in as a new patient really quickly. Dr. Lam always works quickly and efficiently to find out how I'm doing, figure out the best course of action, and give me as much information as possible, including not only potential side effects but cost to say that I can make the best decision. The reason why I'm giving two stars is because on my initial visit they brought me into the back room to wait for dr. Got a call today after 3 years of not seeing this doctor. And I remembered clearly why I went to see him. He didn't give the right dosage of pills but at the time I didn't care because it wasn't helping and I gotten better without much of his work. But the call was what made me give one star. She was a complete rude receptionist. First off claiming to have contact me in 3 years when my Verizon account showed she only started calling me yesterday. 3 years ago when I was there, they ask for my insurance assuming they spoke to them because they said I don't owe anything except the taxes which I paid. This is a 'no-frills' doctor's office, but I don't mind because I like to get in and out of my doctor's appointments quickly and Lam Family Medicine certainly does a good job at that. It is a very small staff and the doc does a lot of work himself, but they are very efficient and thorough. If he can, he will even help you over phone or call in a prescription. My test results or any paperwork I need filled out is done quickly and at times, the same day. I work in downtown, so his office location is within walking distance from my office. I can easily get my appointments taken care of on my lunch break, but if I did need to drive, there is ample parking. read more

This review is more geared towards the receptionist rather than Dr. Lam himself. I called to cancel my appointment because I was feeling better and didn't feel the need to be seen. The receptionist gave me a full spiel about their 24 hour cancellation policy (I made the appt less than 24 hours ago) in which they would charge $25 at my next visit - which is totally fine. I understand the need for such a policy (although $25 is steep). But the attitude that came with it did not sit well with me. I made sure to call right when they opened for the possibility that someone else in more urgent need could take the slot. She proceeded to tell me that they were fully booked that day and had to actually turn away patients. Thanks for the guilt trip - I was expecting more of a "We're so glad you're feeling better." She then hung up on me without saying another word. I've worked in the medical field for many years and I've witnessed many good practices put the well-being of their patients first and foremost. I've been a patient of the Lam's starting from his father Dr. Howman Lam. One day I wasn't feeling that well but Dr. Howman Lam wasn't available that day, so his son Dr. Edward Lam took the case. He was very friendly and professional and took the time to explain what was wrong with me. Later on, when I found out that Dr. Edward Lam was starting his own practice, so I decided to move over to his office. His new office is nice and has a great view.
