Must haves are the Farmers ham with grated horseradish and pickles as an appetizer. The pumpkin soup was amazing with a hint of curry and the main course was the Wiener schnitzel was the star of the experience. The accompanying potato salad was incredibly delicious as well. Overall a great Austrian dining experience, I highly recommend eating here.

4.5 stars! Ottenthal was one of the restaurants I discovered while in Berlin. In particular, what…read morecaught my attention was the fact that it offered, by far, the best schnitzel in Berlin! So, given I was in Germany..and even though I never really dream of eating schnitzel days and nights, I had to stop by this place! I particularly liked that the restaurant offered pretty much very natural/no chemicals food. Everything was fresh and, shall I say, natural/organic...and they were committed to those types of ingredients. I also liked that despite a higher price point than most restaurants in Berlin, the staff were polite, friendly and relatable..and not a stucked up place at all! Now, when it came to the food, I loved all my dishes! The pumpkin soup was so fresh and Devine! The schnitzel..wow..shall I say, crisp and thin..and not oily at all! Eating it together with the side potato salad that was a lil sour and sweet made it a good combination without additional condiments for sure! Lastly, the Baumkuchen was wonderful! I had so much food that night that I ended up having to order Baumkuchen to go..and I was not disappointed at all! Good to try all the good things while in Berlin! Overall, I highly recommend Ottenthal! Sure, as the name suggested, Ottenthal is Austrian town..but hey..schnitzel can also be German! Go try it and you'd taste the differences between this vs other places! Just some minor half star off was due to price (it's slightly high compared to other options out there in Berlin for sure.but hey..tasted sehr gut!!), restrooms are down a set of stairs (pretty common for German restaurants..but I have no ideas how Germany deals with accessibility for disabled population!) and finally..the place is rather small..so make sure to make some reservations so you won't be disappointed if you showed up but couldn't get in!

Something that reminds you of home or of mom. For me it is this way with Gasthaus Stelzeneder. Good, solid, main-stream German/Austrian food... except my mother never made potatoes like these... There is nothing else to say except the fired potatoes served with the schnitzel are the best fried potatoes I've ever had and one of the best and most satisfying dishes I have ever had. Period... The beef broth soup? Nice, tasty, perhaps a bit too much bread in it. The side salad? Perfectly acceptable but nothing memorable. The schnitzel? Better then most, but frankly they could've taken both schnitzel pieces back for more potatoes. And the potatoes! Ach du lieber! They were tremendous. In the US we call these "home fries" and they are often served alongside eggs and bacon in the morning. Let me tell you, every line order cook who makes homes fries in the US needs to spend a week here in Charlottenburg and learn at the feet of the master at Stelzeneder. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and also came out very hot. Not overcooked like many "home fries" back home in the States. Each piece of potato kept it's shape and it didn't all melt into some indistinguishable mash of starch like back home. The potatoes were fried in a bunch of coarsely ground up ham and the ham clearly imparted a flavor into the starch, but only on the surface. Remember these potatoes had to be made fresh because they were not overcooked so when you bit into them you initially tasted the ham on your tongue but then finished with the distinct and satisfying flavor of potato. And the seasoning was perfect. This was one of the only times I didn't reach at all for the salt for my potatoes. Additionally the fresh parsley (not dried) is the perfect yin to the ham's yang. Come to this place for a good home-cooked meal, and please, please, have the fried potatoes.

But every Wahlberliner ("Berliner by choice" auf Deutsch) who 1. bundles up in all black on gloomy winter days, 2. completes everyday errands without resorting to English, and 3. survives the Ausländerbehörde with a residence permit in hand knows that it's always an unexpected moment that truly makes you feel at home in Berlin. For me, it was the first time I instinctively muttered "Scheiße!" under my breath when all of the coins from my wallet fell to the floor when I was purchasing Laugenbrötchen from Alpenstück's in-house bakery one afternoon. Almost immediately, a German woman stood up from her table--momentarily abandoning a delicious-looking cake--to help me pick up all of those pesky one- and two-cent coins as a random act of kindness. (Who said Berliners were rude?) My time in Berlin has made me a bread snob. Maybe it's for the better, because every time I spot lye bread, I think of how my hankering for fresh Bavarian bread put an extra spring in my step after I left Alpenstück that afternoon. It might look like your typical place in Mitte (it's a modern, well-lit space with a subtle rustic touch). But maybe you'll leave Alpenstück with a better impression of Berlin... and some tasty bread.

I was hoping this was what the other yelper had recommended (wind cloud), but it doesn't matter because it was ridiculously delicious and what I would imagine a wind cloud would taste like, if such a thing existed. We also had the kasespatzle which is like a german version of macaroni and cheese, and it was delicious. Everything looked so good, and I am really sad that this place does not exist in Pasadena so that I can try it all! Maybe I just need to move to Berlin to accomplish my goal. BTW, there are bees everywhere which initially scared the crap out of me, but eventually I got used to it. If I was a bee, I would be in this store too.
