I am in the process of buying a house, and the homeowner's insurance company will not issue me a…read morepolicy because: "This Elevation Certificate is missing the level for the highest adjacent grade, which was required at the time the cert was completed. Due to this, we cannot issue the policy based off of the information provided. The insured will need to provide a new certificate which reflects all required levels." My insurance agent recommended I call Gilbert, Kelly & Couturie to have them survey the property and issue a new EC. When I called, Michelle informed me that it would be better for me to first call the firm that issued the Elevation Certificate to see if they could update the existing form, rather than me spending $250 to get a new survey done. I am extremely impressed that Michelle asked the correct questions and helped me, who knows nothing about surveying, figure out what I needed to do, even if that meant she would not get my business at this time. If it turns out I need a new survey, I will definitely be using Gilbert, Kelly & Couturie.

Things were going alright with the survey but I have major concern over communication and ethic…read more The first time they came out they were very professional, gave me a call/ heads up 15 minutes before they were coming etc. (hence why this is 2 stars not one.) There however was a problem with the measurements and they needed to come out a second time. Mistakes happen, and when it comes to property lines you've got to be right... we also all make mistakes.. and I would have never known this if it was not for what happened next. Well the second time they were coming out was were the problem happened. They did not give me any heads up they were coming out. I was back in my office working when I heard something happening on the side of the house and the dog started flipping out. I look outside to see my gate had been taken off the hinge (I keep it locked) in order for them to get into the back yard. I realize the surveyor gear and ask whats going on (keep in mind I had no clue they were coming back out to my house and figured it was for another house) and why my gate is off the hinge. They tell me they are finishing up my property etc, so I call the company to check the facts. I get a phone call back from the company (Cindy, who is ultra professional and a pleasure to work with) and she tells me whats going on. She made the mistake of handing things over to Rob though... I was okay with everything until Rob acted like it was no big deal that they took my gate off the hinge to get into the back yard because it was "easy to do".... this is what prompted the review. It is a big deal... that is breaking and entering. I also have a dog that I let chill outside in the morning before it gets too hot... whom luckily at that moment was no outside or it could have been bad news bears for the survey team. Cindy was a pleasure to communicate with, but the rest of the team acts a bit to much like its no big deal to unhinge someone's gate without permission, consent, or notice.

Sam is a graduate of Tulane University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and leads a small team of engineers, environmentalists and surveyors in the CBD / warehouse district area. I had the occasion to call S.Z.S. Consultants Inc, because I needed a flood elevation for my home (welcome to NOLA). A co-worker of mine and Tulane graduate had used S.Z.S. Consultants Inc. in the past and highly recommended them. Since I also work in the CBD / warehouse district, I walked over to their office in order to get a feel for the business before I simply ordered the flood elevation over the phone. The office is a typical warehouse district brick building and is sufficient for what they do. Everyone in the office was polite and I even got to chat with Sam himself. He's a very straightforward guy, and nice too. His office is loaded with Tulane memorabilia, and each piece seems to have a story associated with it. My flood elevation was performed exactly when they promised and my flood elevation certificate was ready & stamped as promised. I'm not sure if it's a common practice, but I actually got two original stamped & sealed copies of my flood elevation certificate. All in all, this was a great business experience.
