I ordered the Cullen Skink, as it was a Scottish dish I had really wanted to try on my trip. It came out in a timely manner. I found it to be just fine. There were very tiny, sparse pieces of a darker fish. The potatoes in the soup were undercooked and uniform, leading me to believe they were canned. Overall, it was decent and warming enough. For my drink, I wanted to order a local gin & tonic. The server was helpful enough to make a gin recommendation.

I got the seafood sampler as my main which came with mussels in a creamy white wine broth, smoked fish pate, fried fish, bread and sauce. Enjoyed the seafood, especially the mussels, though I would have preferred a nicer bread to soak up the broth and spread the pate onto. For dessert, I wanted to try the cranachan sundae, having never had cranachan. Inside was oats, berry compote, clotted cream (I think), ice cream and whipped cream. It was all excellent! My vegetarian friend enjoyed her veg burger. I felt the waitress was a little bit standoffish. Food came out in a reasonable timeframe.

We came early (before 6) as our…read moreB&B advised everything quite full, and were given a nice corner table next to a couple of regulars who filled us in on local sights. Staff were friendly and service was good. Started with garlic bread and a pint, then I had the steak and black pudding pie while my wife had the Mongolian beer. Both very tasty and served piping hot. Cleaned the plates! A sundae for desert was a good way to finish. Regular bar in the other room was crowded and noisy - seems like a popular meeting spot. Altogether a very pleasant experience

The Lochy was fine for what it was for us--a very casual, very basic pub dinner after a relatively…read morelong travel day from Edinburgh--but it was probably the most average food we had of nine or ten days of mostly great eating in Scotland. Getting here was the most special, maybe. Having driven a car on the left for the first time ever on this day, wanting to have a beer or two, and staying in an apartment in nearby Corpach, we didn't really want to drive on this evening. On a beautiful evening, we investigated the Corpach waterfront (the end (the beginning?) of the Caledonian Canal) and took in the unbelievable views along the waterfront path (the Corpach shipwreck, Ben Nevis, the loch, and so on), and we wandered on over to Caol and the Lochy. (We returned via the canal path itself; you can jump on just across the street from the Lochy.) I see from Tripadvisor that plenty of tourists get to the Lochy, but it sure seemed like a locals' spot on the night we were there, with a number of families present. Although the outside of the place suggests that it might contain a dim warren of rooms, it's actually a couple of brightly lit larger rooms with a bar in the middle, where you order your food and drinks. Venison burger for me was pretty tasty--although it came only with caramalized onions and goat cheese, which left things a little dry--and the wife's fish and chips were OK. Like I say above, the food was fine, but not especially memorable. Several beers were on draft, and everything was reasonably priced. 3.5 stars.

This was our first distillery tour in Scotland. I'm not sure why the low reviews from other…read morepeople, maybe they didn't do their Scotland research but before coming to the country the first thing I came across was "always make reservations for distilleries". Never assume you can walk in on a tour. Especially for a small town, less well known distillery like this one. Well I emailed them several weeks in advance telling them I'd be coming in on the late train from Glasgow (turns out we came in early) but when we arrived, it seemed like they were going to hold the tour for us. ...how considerate (see what contacting in advance does, I was also interested in a higher priced tour so that might have helped) The basic tour is £5 and includes one whisky sample at the end, but you can upgrade to the tasting tour £18 which includes 3 additional samples (just one of us did it, my hubby was getting tired of whisky samples. ....crazy I know) Both tours are the same, Start with a cute, funny, but outdated and cheesy movie, then move through the distilling process which is both educational and a feast for the senses (does anyone ever get contact drink from all the fumes? ). After the tours we end up in the tasting room where each bottle they offer for sale was explained and we tried their youngest blended whisky. For those of us on the tasting tour we got to sample a 12 year blend, a very Peaty single malt ( made from a middle ages recipe) no longer sold, and their cask strength blended called glen Coe (great bouquet on that one). I ended up wanting to buy something on the sweeter side so they let me sample their blue bottle of dew (smelled fruity and like honey....didn't taste that way though) and I ended up buying that blended bottle as well as another bottle of something else. It's not that well known so if you see their whisky around you'll likely only get to purchase the 10 yr in stores but they have a great variety in their shop. I appreciate how they didn't rush us even though we (and another couple were the last customers) and when we left it had been clear they had been waiting for us to close up and go home. They were very nice and chatted and joked with us about whisky etc. We had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this distillery to others.

If you are lucky enough to get him, you will have a very informative tour. Sorry, I don't remember his name. He answered every question, and he was thorough about the production techniques in distilling fine whiskey. Even with our large group, he conveyed interest and pride in Ben Nevis whiskey. I think a tour here depends on getting the right guide. Our guide made the tour for us.
