There are highs and lows (elevation changes) involved in this trail hike! Each one gives beautiful views and scenic walks as you enjoy the more natural side of San Francisco. I highly recommend the Lands End Trail for anyone who wants a peaceful walk through nature. It can be a little challenge after or during rain but nothing some good hiking shoes and waterproof gear can't solve. I prefer to start on the more eastern side of the trail to have those stunning ocean beach views afterwards. Get ready for some sand, stairs, and great opportunities for pics. After living in the bay for so many years, I finally got to hike the Lands End Trail! Went on Labor Day Sunday with my dad around 9am and there was lots of parking available then. Great views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. It's a popular park so we did come across a lot of people but still had space to walk comfortably. There are some staircases on the trail which definitely upped the difficulty. Overall, I would say the hike is moderate due to all the steps. My dad was able to complete the hike, but it was a bit challenging for him. We finished after two hours and by the time we returned, the parking lot was full so I recommend arriving before 9:30am. The trail is well-maintained and the views were amazing. Even during summer the nature was lush and green. There could be more trail markers as I had to refer to All Trails for directions, but I would come back! read more

How have I never been here before?! In the most walkable city in America (in my opinion), this is not a spot to be missed. What I love the most are the different angles of the Golden Gate Bridge from along the trail. I started this trail at the visitor center and walked it to its completion. The weather in October was perfect - a light sweatshirt and I was set! There are some sections that have steps and some other sections that are quite shaded; so much so that if it's after a rain, there could be mud patches along the trail. I was in a walking boot when I walked this -- not the best choice -- but I was able to walk all of it.. albeit the step sections were very slow. Near the "end," I was shaking my head wondering what the heck I was thinking. I walked this on a Friday morning and probably saw... less than 30 people the entire time. When I've recovered from my injury, I'd love to go back and trail run this. I love that you're so close to the city but feel a million miles away. 2025: 71/100 read more

Following a day of travel. And looking to get out and stretch our legs, my wife's family and I decided to go for a hike. Her sister lives very close to the start of the Lands End Trail, and she highly recommended it for some great views. She certainly wasn't lying, the trail hugs the cliffs of the coast outside the San Francisco giving you beautiful views of the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. In total it was about a 3.5 mile hike, out and back. But I'll definitely say it's a bit of a moderate hike, especially after a rainy evening, which left the trails a muddy and covered in puddles. There are also some large steps along the way, but also benches and spots to rest and enjoy the views. That being said, we hiked with my wife's parents (who are in their 70s), and our 7 year old niece, and we certainly weren't the fastest group out there, but taking our time, everyone was able to make it out and back safely. We also found markers along the trail identifying plants, or talking about the trail's original use, which was a train route that would bring people to San Francisco to the beach before mass transportation was readily available If you have the time and enjoy getting outside, I'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting San Francisco. The views on a nice day are unbeatable! I without a doubt would/will absolutely do it again next time we visit! read more

Lands End Trail has to be the best kept secret in SF. The trail is remarkable with free parking...just get there before noon on a weekend. The trail has an incredible view of the coast and Golden Gate Bridge. The trails are wide and not overcrowded. The main trail diverges into various other trails and not overly challenging - although there is one segment I call the "stairway to heaven" that you will want to be in shape for. I spent 3 hours on the trail although I ventured into the neighborhood and viewed many of the spectacular houses and discovered China Beach nearby. The location has well maintained restrooms. The weather can change from moment to moment so prepare accordingly - and bring water and snacks! read more

Lands End is one of my favorite spots in San Francisco! It's a well kept trail with beautiful views of the ocean and Golden Gate Bridge. I love going here in the early mornings to catch the sunrise! There's also a path that will take you straight down to the beach and to Sutro Baths. I've gone in the mornings as early as 5:30am-7:00am and it's pretty peaceful with minimal foot traffic aside from some runners and photographers. I've also come later in the day around 11am-3pm when it gets busier but it never felt overly crowded as the paths are pretty wide for the most part. Fair warning there are some stairs/steps! As for parking, I've never had any issues as there's a lot right by the trail entrance and another lot across the street (both of which are free). Also, Land's End is dog friendly! read more

Beautiful trail overlooking Golden gate bridge that's easily accessible by public transit. There were so many jaw dropping points throughout the trail, and such a diverse variety of plants and flowers that I wouldn't know which part is my favorite. It's next to a golf course so they note that there a higher risk getting hit with a golf ball here lol. The full loop is about 3.4 miles, and can go onto sutro baths. A must see in SF. read more

I went on the Lands End hike. The view is beautiful and there's a lot of history here that the trail signage shared. There is parking but it can be full. There are also a few Rivian EV charging spots. The 4 stars is because there is a lot of people who visit and it is very much a tourist spot. The further you hike the more likely you'll be able to find some solitude. read more

This trail is absolutely AMAZING!!!! Probably one of the best trails I've ever had!!! I started at the "end" of the trail in a neighborhood, since my GPS sent me there. I didn't know what to expect. The views keep getting better and better throughout the hike! The hike was very casual and easy! Just a lot of steps! It takes you along the coastal path and you're right next to the Pacific Ocean the whole time! Beautiful pathways and trees! Then you come towards the main lookout and main parking lot, where the beach and the cave is located. They also have ruins of an old salt water bathing area. Kinda creepy but still beautiful! The cave was amazing and pretty cold inside, but clean! I also went by the beautifully painted staircases. This place is great for families and friends and I quite enjoyed the adventure. I started from the parking lot side of the trail and it was very straightforward. You really couldn't get lost. I would describe the trail as two halves. The first half of the trail was simple and there was plenty of space to walk around. There were a lot more open areas for views. The second half of the trail was much less crowded since people didn't want to wear themselves out going up the stairs. Some parts of this trail was very narrow and it felt like I was walking a secret passage that was surrounded by vegetation. It took me about half an hour to reach the end to a paved street in a residential area so an hour total to go back. The views were absolutely scenic. I was surprised with how green the plant life was here compared to other parts of the Bay Area. This area does have the cooler weather and moisture from the fog in its favor. One of my favorite parts of the trail was seeing the poppy flowers. This was my first time seeing so many at once and they were only found in one area of the trail. I also enjoyed seeing the Golden Gate Bridge from afar. I didn't need to look for it as it was already visible while on the trail as long as the fog was blocking it. The best part might have been breathing the real fresh air and feeling the breeze hit my face. Be aware that there were no restrooms or even a porta potty on the trail. The only area I found that had restrooms and a water foundation was at the lookout which was right next to the parking lot. The restrooms and lookout opened and closed at the same time from 9am - 5pm daily so keep that in mind if you were to come earlier or later in the day. There were a few benches available at both the start and end of the trail. The benches were in open areas that provided people with great views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. There was nowhere to sit in the middle of the trail and I wouldn't sit on the ground. I saw a couple of people walk their dogs and one of the dogs just had to go in the middle of the trail. read more

Honestly this is the perfect little hike to have the best views of the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge as well as Sutro Baths. You can start at Lands End Lookout which has a Golden Gate National Parks gift store and bathrooms. The trail is very easy to follow and wide enough for it not to feel crowded. There are some steps up and down but overall fairly flat and easy to navigate. It's mostly shaded which is nice as well. Dog friendly too! You'll end by Sea Cliff and can walk down to the Richmond. read more

We absolutely love hiking. One place we love hiking around is San Francisco's coastal areas. We hiked here last weekend and it was our last hike for 2023. It's fairly easy to find and there's plenty of parking as long as you arrive early. There are a lot of tourists and out of towners (like us lol), so come early. We started our hike at 8am thinking it was early enough since it was cold and wet, but there were a lot of hikers already there. This is such a beautiful trail!!!! Fantastic sights of GGB, birds, beach, S Bay and flowers (Superbloom). +. Busy with the crowds but it didn't feel cramped. Surprisingly there were many Europeans when current exchange rates are unfavorable. +. Parking is free but tight. We were able to score a spot after waiting few minutes. Recommend wearing a decent pair of tennis shoes, sun screen, sunglasses and carrying a bottle of water. It was a hot day so the breeze was welcome but it's always a good idea to layer up. Lands End Trail has to be one of the best hikes in San Francisco, especially for anyone who isn't spending more than a few days here. Parking is easy and there are lots of paved trails to explore which is great for people with mobility issues. It has always been crowded whether I come in the morning of afternoon, weekday or weekend, but people do tend to think out the further you go. I once had to listen to a conversation from two young men about how "fire" their party was and it's just about the only thing that has ever made me want to leave, but luckily I'm old and just pretended like I needed to stop and rest for a bit until they were out of earshot. The scenery is beautiful! For some reason I always seem to find myself here on a foggy day, but there are beautiful views of nature and you can even seen the Golden Gate Bridge from many points on the trail(s). This is another example of the natural beauty of the city. It's dog friendly, so bring your pups with you, but remember to bring your valuables as well because cars do get broken into often unfortunately. read more

This is a pretty short trail (roughly 3.5 miles) with lots of stairs. If you're not walking on the stairs, you'll be walking on sand. The start of the trail is hard to find because there's also a golf course and some neighborhoods to walk by before you see it. There's a lot of good views of the Golden Gate Bridge (as long as it's not cloudy, but good luck with that, haha) and other beautiful landscapes. The trail takes you to the beach where there's a lot of good views, too. This trail is pretty popular and when we went this past Saturday morning, there were a lot of people on it. It's also pretty dog friendly. Again, great views, pretty short hike and accessible (by bus) if you don't have a car in SF. Definitely check it out! read more

Great little spot on the top north west part of S.F. has a short hike of 2-3 miles if you park at the legion of honor museum and walk from there. Watch out for the golf course cuz we almost got hit by some golf balls . But it's very green and nice and when you get to the actual lands end it's pretty nice and calm and not busy. The views are pretty good of the Golden Gate Bridge and the port and we even saw carrier cargo ships come in as well. Def recommend it read more

I've visited Lands End several times, but yesterday was my first time hiking the trail. There's a free parking area, which is great. The views are stunning--you can see the remnants of a burnt-down bathhouse, the ocean, and a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge. My boyfriend wanted to see the rocks on the beach, but unfortunately, they've been removed. Despite that, this is a fantastic spot for photos! The hike is relatively easy, with the exception of some long stairs that are still manageable. It's a great hike for chatting with friends because the path is mostly flat, allowing for a relaxed pace. It's ideal for beginners or anyone looking for a quick 3-mile hike or a casual outing with a friend. Plus, it's dog-friendly! The trail is partly shaded and partly exposed, so I recommend bringing a hat or wearing a jacket, as it can be both hot and chilly, especially being close to the ocean. I hiked from 4 PM to 6 PM, and the weather fluctuated between hot and cool. Make sure to bring water and wear comfortable shoes. There are restrooms at the beginning of the trail, so use them before you start hiking. Keep in mind that this trail can get quite crowded due to its popularity, so don't expect complete peace and quiet. However, people here have manners which was nice unlike in Mission Peak. Overall, it's a wonderful trail, and I'd definitely come back again. read more
