Beautiful spot along the coast. There is a short walk on a path to the lookout point. It's connected to a couple of trails you can walk along. There is a bathroom that has no sink or water. The parking lot has a good amount of spaces. Note that this is federal and the parking lot is closed during shutdowns. You can park nearby and walk in there is no entrance or fee. If you are in the area and driving by I recommend stopping by for a few minutes. read more

It's a bit of a hidden gem! [Highway 1 North of Muir Beach CA] The Muir Beach Overlook was a nice stop along Highway 1 but to get here is a long, narrow and winding road. Parking lot isn't very big (15-20 spaces, maybe?) and could easily get full. There are bathrooms, picnic benches, interpretive signs, staircase... and huh? bunkers?! Historically, yes, this area was used as an observation station during World War II. There are a total of four bunkers, coastal defense systems for fire control especially after Pearl Harbor switched everyone to high alert for possible attacks against San Francisco. We went down the staircase... a short path that led out to a viewpoint overlooking the mighty Pacific Ocean about 400 feet below steep cliffs. Enjoy the views, there is no access to the shoreline below. Had we not known about this overlook we would've driven right by without noticing. It's kind of hidden. I am so fortunate to live where I do. I can hop in the car and drive a few hours to be on Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast at Muir Beach Overlook. But I never can tell if what the weather would be ... a foggy and overcast or bright and sunny. But fortunately a few weeks ago, the weather set was fabulous. Bright and sunny, not a whisper of fog in sight. The drive to Muir Beach Overlook is not for the amateurish driver or one afraid of heights. Highway 1 is a two car lane highway with twists and turns, plus the road is shared with bike riders. Yes, folks riding bicycles. So watch out for them on those tight blind turns. The lanes are narrow so stay on your side of the painted lines. But the reward of spectacular views is worth it. Plus it is absolutely free... no fees required or requested. FREE. The Muir Beach Overlook is its own location and is different than the actual Muir Beach site. The overlook is set north of the beach. You can drive there, it has its own parking lot and public loo. They have handicapped parking spots. There is a viewing area right alongside the lot which is ADA assessable. But for those able to handle a bit more of walk, there is a path to a further viewing platform out on the edge of the rocky cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Bring your binoculars, you may see migrating whales out yonder. I have in the past seen migrating whales, seen them without using binoculars. Talking about wildlife. The rocky cliffs are nesting areas for Peregrine falcons. Plus you may also spot brown pelicans and sparrows. Another notable thing about the Overlook are the historic remnants of four World War Ii base end stations which the soldiers, of the time, nicknamed Gopher Holes. Back in the day, the stations each had powerful scopes to look out for enemy ships and aircrafts. The stations are built sunk into the cliffs so to make them blend in more. read more

Great overlook if you are in the area and need a quick rest stop and photo op! I was on my way to Mt. Tamp East Peak, so this was a easy detour that did not take too much time off my schedule. Parking can be a pain here, so be prepared as it's a small lot and not a lot of parking nearby. Restrooms are available, but your typical beach style (Not clean most of the time). Parking is free, so that is a plus! I'd say if it's a nice day and you have time, it's a great stop, if it's dreary weather, not sure it's really worth it. read more

Great place after a long walk thru woods to have picnic. My sister made a nice spread for us to enjoy. Beautiful spot overlooking the coast bluffs and cliffs. Sone steps down but they have taking so most people can do and small steps so very manageable. We walked down to the edge and view spectacular of California coast. Very windy so bring a jacket. After we went back up and they have quite a few picnic tables in sun and if u walk between bushes and trees they have some in the shade all have nice views. It's about 12 min down winding road to the overlook from the woods. Have fun. read more

I have visited here a few times between friends and partners. Lots to explore. There's photo opportunities. Water views for days. Sometimes, that gorgeous foggy Bay Area backdrop is perfect for unfiltered beauty. There is a parking lot available (free) with restrooms, and you can bring dogs on a leash. Great manageable hike. Start at the Muir Beach Overlook parking lot. First you walk to the end to get your panoramic pic of the coastline, head over to the Owl Trail, which gently dips down, with an amazing view of the shoreline below. I could see part of Stinson Beach to the north. It's well maintained, although I'd look out for those tall grasses, they'll leave you with souvenir burrs on your clothes. The stairs each have a large landing so it's about 1.5 steps per stair. Definitely not baby carriage or wheelchair friendly. The trail doesn't loop, so you can turn around anytime. The uphill return is easier than walking a San Francisco Nob Hill sidewalk. Everything was in bloom, we saw a quail dart by, and there were several small lizard guides along the path. It's a small but impressive place here. The views are amazing from here, but the California coastal views are all stunning. I've been here a few times and don't usually spend more than 30 minutes here as it's a pit stop. I've never experienced anyone's car being broken into, but they says it's a hot spot for smash and grabs. Lock up, hide and don't show belongings being left in the car as you should all places. They have public restrooms that are more clean than most, and plenty of tables for lunch or eating out here if you want. Cheers!!!! read more

I came here on the way home from Stinson beach in December. Definitely very chilly in this are this time of year. There was a lot of parking for this viewpoint. I came on a Thursday afternoon so I didn't have problems at all. I can see how this place would be busy on the weekend. Because the beaches are always busy during Summer. The walk from the parking lot to the vista point end of the vista point is not too far. I would say about a quarter mile walk. and a slight down hill to there. (That means a small uphill on the way back) Be aware there are signs all over the parking lot that says this area has a high volume of smash and grab auto incidents. So make sure you have all your important belongings hidden or with you. Unfortunately, when at the view point your unable to get a visual on your parked car. there are bathrooms, but it was really cold in there and literally just a hole in the ground. read more

With the Muir Beach Overlook being very close to both Muir Beach & Stinson Beach, we decided to add it to our vacay itinerary on 08/20/2022. The outlook area itself isn't very big so it can get/feel crowded if there are more than 9/10 people standing in that area & you'll have to wait for others to leave before you can take any good pics. There are picnic tables located near the parking lot & parking is free. There is a restroom onsite but be warned because it is very dirty. On the day we visited, 08/20/2022 around 4pm..the weather was very gloomy & the fog was so thick that you couldn't see very much of the water so as others have previously mentioned..it is a good idea to check the forecast before you visit so that it isn't a wasted trip. I only gave 3 stars because I was expecting a much better view & honestly, after 15-20 mins, our visit was done. I wouldn't have made the trip to visit Muir Beach Outlook only but would add to the itinerary for a quick visit if you were already planning to visit Muir Woods or one of the nearby beaches (Muir or Stinson). Great hidden gem!!! We actually found out this place by accident because we got to the Muir Woods parking lot 45 minutes earlier before our reservation time, so the security guard recommended us to check out the beach first. We didn't drive down to the beach but we found out this Muir Beach overlook instead. It's a small place but the view of the coastline was so beautiful and felt like we were in Hawaii. I was in IMDB presuming I would find a long list of movies filmed at this picturesque promontory. But no, there was just one film listed, and it was some low budget comedy released earlier this year. I was picturing Hitchcock directing Jimmy Stewart to push Kim Novak over the railing or at least Ryan Gosling making out with Emma Stone at the end of the 450-foot walkway as Adele sings a dramatic ballad over the ending credits. You get quite a view of the Pacific Coast here though ironically not Muir Beach itself with all the rocks and foliage in the way. That was my biggest surprise as the outlook is about a five-minute drive away from the beach itself. Good thing there's a decent size parking lot with restrooms, but I imagine it fills up fast on the weekends especially since it's on the way to Stinson Beach. An overlook with not only an utterly breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, but you also get a history lesson while you're here. Scattered throughout the area you'll see little "dugouts" where Navy Sailors would hide in with binoculars looking out for enemy ships (this was after the Pearl Harbor bombing). If they saw one, they were signal ahead to the Batteries further down the coast (Kirby, Spencer, etc) and warned them. It's amazing how much of our history is still preserved and so accessible to us. If you're into military history or just want a killer view of the sea, you can't go wrong here. The walk down to the main platform is easy going in and out. read more

This is very easy to find! We just typed Muir Beach Overlook into Google Maps and drive straight to it! There's a short path to a great spot with nice views (also nice for taking pictures). It wasn't too crowded at 4:45 on a Friday in June, but there were just enough people there to take our picture! It was really cool because we literally saw clouds forming off the ocean. One of my absolute favorite sunset spots in the Bay Area! This place is soo dreamy on a sunny day during sunset hour. The drive here is a bit tough as it has lots of turns and you lose cell service for about most of the drive. I did have signal again once I got to the actual overlook area. If you can, I would recommend experiencing this beauty on a weekday when it isn't so crowded. There's a small parking lot but can fill up quick over the weekend. read more

Instead of turkey and then food coma-ing together. This is year my siblings and I were sunset hunting. And what a great day to be at the Muir Beach Outlook. We arrived around 2pm and parking was full. No problem, there were plenty of street parkings down the road. After restroom stop, we headed towards the "Slide Ranch Trail". If you are facing the ocean with the overlook to your left, the Slide Ranch Trail is on your right side. It's only .6miles and slightly decline all the way to the Ranch. Patrons of the trail were generally conscientious about putting on the mask when we passed each other. Otherwise, all you can breathe fresh air. This is dog friendly trail. Coco was off leashed the whole time. If you just walked and not stopping to take pictures, selfies, video and such, you'll get to the ranch in 30min. The first time we were here, took us 1 hour. Husband stopped at every curve and I took numerous selfies and wefies! Slide Ranch- Apparently, for city folks like me, looking at smelly goats and sheep , bare neck chicken, rooster, ducks were mesmerizing. Lol. There's a Yurt at the end of the trail with a pretty gazebo like structure. We were told it's a popular spot for wedding ceremony. Facing the ocean with the Yurt to your right, you will see Tide Pools Trail on your left side. Make sure you have a minimum of 2 hours before the sunset. It's 15 min going down. The last end of the trail to the tide pool is pretty steep. Get ready to slide down on your bum if you are not a mountain goat! But it's so worth it. So much to discover in the tide pools. Warning: there is a posting about abundance of tick on the trail. I did find 1 on Coco at the bottom. But, when we were there, the vegetation was well maintained. The view was breatht read more

So glad we made the decision to come up here. Incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance as this primary overlooks the pacific coastline. Love seeing the coast from above for some awesome panoramic views. Fairly easy to get to on the way back from Muir Woods National Park. If you go to the park, it's definitely worth the deviation from just heading back into town.There's not a ton of parking up there but you won't spend too much time here so we had no issues finding a spot on a summer weekday. read more

Goodness gracious, Muir Beach Overlook is a sight to see! I recommend going on a clear sunny day to get the most spectacular views of the ocean, the steps to the overlook, the mountains, and the beach. There is a road filled with steps that will take you all the way to the overlook. It's stunning to just walk on it and soak in the views left and right. You've got the ocean to the right and mountains and a beach to the left. There is another mini overlook towards the left side where you can see views of the beach/mountain. I didn't bother walking all the way to this overlook since there were a lot of people there. The best overlook is the one the steps lead to anyway. I would say I spent about 30-35 minutes here. There is a small parking lot (free) with two restrooms. I highly recommend bringing baby wipes as there was no soap! Luckily, I always carry mini baby wipes in my purse. I recommend bringing your own toilet paper as a precaution as well just in case they don't have any that day. read more

If you make the effort to go out to see the majestic redwood trees of Muir Woods, you owe it to yourself to make the short drive to this scenic spot. Perched high above the sea with a smallish parking lot, you will have 180 degree views up and down the pacific coast. There's a small path out to the point (maybe 10-yards long) and easy to walk but only room for 10 people or so at the end. There is also a restroom. You will only need 15 min so even if the parking lot is full, people are generally just coming and going so it would only be a short wait. read more

It's probably a bit hard to find - we just saw 1 sign and went for it. There is a small parking lot and even a bathroom, which is currently open, even with COVID. It was easy to find a parking spot. It wasn't very crowded on a Friday afternoon, so we had plenty of space to enjoy the view. There's also a little path to the overlook point which was empty. This spot is fantastic if you're driving down the highway and looking for a gorgeous view without having to commit to a walk down to the actual beach. Due to covid 19 and the shut downs going on there isn't much else to do but go outside and enjoy nature,which I can't complain about too much. Make sure to bring a mask as the trails can get a little tight at times. Currently there are no public restrooms available on site so make sure to take care of business before your hike. You can decide if you want to take the flat path or be a bit more adventurous and hike in a rockier area. There is a beautiful stairway that takes you down the cliff to a closer look at the beach. I highly suggest to make this drive in the daytime where you have plenty of time to drive back through the mountains without fear of the sun going down because there are no street lamps and the road are very winding. Great mini side trip after Muir Woods. The road was a bit less winding than the roads getting to Muir Woods, so it was nice to have a slightly less nauseating ride (none of it was that bad, but it's probably the only thing to complain about both places). Parking was plentiful, and there weren't many people around. The views are spectacular, although I don't think they really translate well to photos. The very end of the overlook was fun to enjoy alone on a Saturday weekend afternoon for a few minutes. A tiny bit windy right by the beach, but I don't think it'd be scary for most people, as it's just walking down the stairs, and no major drops where fear of heights would be an issue. The mini bunkers with the history is a nice twist to the location. read more

If you're stopping by Muir Woods, I would definitely recommend making a short stop to the Muir Beach Overlook. There is quite a large, free parking lot and a few informative pieces, one that depicts the topography of the area and some other related to the military history of the area. The most amazing part of the overlook, of course, is the view. Walking towards the ocean, you will notice a set of steps. As you walk down, you'll pass a little hill (with signs not to trespass and climb but everyone does it anyways; the other day I found some slugs on it!). At the end of the trail, there is a little area that is popular for taking pictures and proposals! read more
