I attended UO for a couple years before transferring. The education was good, but it's a large university so there are going to be those courses where you're one of 100 other students in a huge lecture hall. I also took several Japanese and music courses that had 20-30 students, so it all depends upon what you're taking, of course. The university itself is nice, a lovely setting. It's an arboretum, with over 500 species of trees on campus, and there are several thousand trees on campus as well. Pioneer Cemetery cuts through campus--yes, I've used it as a shortcut. The Oregon Bach Festival is kind of headquartered here, with Festival events taking place at the Hult Center as well as other venues around town. The Museum of Natural and Cultural History sits on the east side of campus and shares history of the city and larger geographical area. I visited and saw a really interesting exhibit about Black history in Eugene and I really appreciated this perspective on my hometown that I didn't learn about in elementary, middle, or high school. There is the ugly, of course, which is Nike's relationship to the university. The company started in Eugene when the famous coach Bill Bowerman used a waffle iron to improve the shoes his runners wore, and student Phil Knight partnered with him and it took off. Federal and state disinvestment in higher education makes for partnerships that are vital to the university, which is happening here. Buildings, athletics facilities, etc. are heavily influenced by or downright decided by the man himself, I'm sure, which is uncomfortable. Hopefully it frees up money in other places to hep students attend. I can't say my review is totally unbiased because of the hometown connection--it has a special place in my heart for that reason. If UO had had the major I wanted, I would have stayed there to complete my education--but that's easy for me to say as an in-state student. But I know several folks from Eugene or beyond who went there and are also happy with the education they received and the setting in which they received it, so it's worth checking out.

I have worked with Extension Service in most every state I have lived. My first experience was as a…read moreyoung person in 4-H going to the fair with my horse. Later, I became a 4-H leader to help others have the great experience that I had. Even more recently, I've contacted them about what native and garden plants did well in my area and when to plant a garden. I have talked to representatives from the Oregon State Extension Office in Douglas County Master Gardening group about native species that attracted pollinators and to the Native Plant Society for a seed exchange. Every group that I've worked with has been wonderful. The gentleman I spoke in the extension office was extremely nice, as well. The Extension Service in your area is extremely important to the community. The services they offer, such as soil sample test analysis, are important and the information they offer is highly valuable. I recommend visiting or calling to anyone.

Dont drive or bike to school they have a huge bike theft and car break in problem that they arent adressing because that would mean accountability and money. They won't even install cameras. Don't leave your keys at you parents place in Portland. If you barrow a key for 2 days housing will pretend they need to change the locks and charge you $375. Dont drink the water, they fail the federal testing every year. Last but certainly not leaset, don't go outside at night, they have a huge mugging and SA issue here.

You aren't just a number here, you are a name, with a face and a story, and a journey. The staff is the same too, they take care of you and know you beyond your academics--the entire self is emphasized here. Your social, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health are important. I will be so sad to walk the stage for graduation in May, but so impacted by what I have learned here!

Made it through 2 levels of calculus believe it or not. 2 years of straight As at Lane made me realize maybe I could handle university - graduated with honors with a BS in psych from U of O, now I'm in grad school - ME. Yes, the advisors suck, so write the program that works for you and don't listen to them. The folks at financial aid can answer your important Qs. The professors are top notch! Almost never had a bad one - I think I had one... all the rest were the greatest - best in the country. This school changed my life, go there ready to work hard and recreate your own :) .
