The education is below average at best. The registration and housing is run extremely poor. There is no housing on campus so everyone has to commute. The housing in Roseburg is of poor quality and they dont allow less than a full year lease. Cost of attending is high considering the low quality of education. read more

I did take some classes here for a short period of time. At that point I really wasn't ready to lock down any type of career decision ... ok I wasn't ready for college. Really what sparks the best memories of this place is spending my summers here swimming and diving. Countless hours spent perfecting a variety of dives that incorporated flips (forward and backward) as well as braving the high dive .... Maybe not quite as brave from that height. For a small community they offer a great place to get your college feet wet and start to get some of the basic requirements out of the way. I went to Umpqua community college so that I could get my Associates degree and transfer degree for accounting, because it was close to home and because I had several scholarships to take advantage of. Do not waste your time or money on this school. Last term my advisor signed me up for 4 classes that ended up being the same class. Wasting my time and money completely. The canvas that you do your school work on is worthless. Almost $400 spent on books only to be told that they can't buy them back because they are for fall term that literally just ended.. Nothing was wrong with them. Just didn't want to take them back. I will be filing formal complaints because this school is greedy and corrupt. read more

Nice campus. The room I teach in is quite modern and equipped with a computer, difital projector for Power Point, but also an overhead projector for papers and such. It's just isolated enough to be calm and relaxing and close enough to town for amenities. Probably the only thing I haven't found yet is a cool coffee cafe to hang out in. read more

DISARMED SECURITY & CONCEALED WEAPON LICENSE HOLDERS - POLLYANNA THINKING GETS PEOPLE KILLED IN THE REAL WORLD According to reports on cable news, some months ago, the administration of Umpqua Community College held an extensive debate over the issue of whether the campus security personnel should be armed or unarmed. Doubtless, mass shootings at other schools and colleges were discussed, probably the one at Virginia Tech in particular. They decided to have unarmed security. After all, no need for armed protection had ever arisen there... yet. In this case, the media is reporting that UCC chose to have their security personnel unarmed so as not the "change the culture" of the campus. Oh, what a noble cause... so much more important than life/safety issues. What a tremendous cost was paid for such fluff, and now the "culture" will be infinitely worse than it would have been with the presence of firearms in the possession of a qualified security professional or concealed weapon license holders among staff or students. I certainly hope their security staff opposed that decision. This was a grave disservice to the staff, students and guests who were required to be unarmed while on the campus. With 9 dead and 9 wounded following Thursday's tragic terror attack, I bet the administrators are rethinking that decision. The UCC web site page on the topic of "Safety & Security" seems to be shut down, as of October 4. It should be, as they should be very ashamed of it. It previously included text that read; "In addition to providing a safe working and learning environment, Campus Security enforces traffic and parking regulations, promotes crime prevention, and secures the college's buildings and facilities." How nice, touting that they are "providing a safe working and learning environment" after making a conscious and labored decision to choose a level of security that had no meaningful response capability, when it would be the most crucial element when lives were on the line. I am almost surprised that they allow fire extinguishers on campus. Would UCC also think that lay people should not take that kind of emergency response into their own hands? Would UCC say they should just wait and suffer pending the arrival of professional firefighters? Notably, the apparent motive of the shooter had nothing whatsoever to do with the type of business the college was engaged in, namely academia. This is a point I always make; crazy is just simply crazy, and anyplace, anytime and anyone can be the target of craziness. The real questions are if innocent people will continue to be required to be defenseless victims of violence in so-called "gun-free zones" such as schools, hospitals, parks, airports and corporate workplaces, and/or denied meaningful protection by capable, armed security personnel. The mere known presence of armed security on that campus may have deterred the attack from occurring there in the first place. Even if it did not deter the attack, it would have provided the means for nearly immediate response to the scene of the attack by armed personnel who were already on site and did not need to be called to drive over to the campus and locate the scene, as was the case with the police. Moreover, they would already know their way around the site and would have been able to locate and access the scene more quickly than unknowing police arriving from off-site. Any time saved to achieve an effective response would have saved lives and prevented additional casualties, because the shooter continued to shoot victims until he was engaged by the first armed responder on scene. The decision of the administration to have unarmed security personnel greatly extended the time until an effective response was achieved, causing additional deaths and woundings that could have been prevented. Those people will be held accountable by the survivors and victim's families, and getting fired from their jobs will just be the start. Political correctness kills. Anti-gun phobia kills. Victim disarmament kills. (There were 6 people present at the Virginia Tech shooting who were licensed to carry concealed firearms, but were unarmed at the time because the college was a "gun-free zone". Well, gun-free for the victims anyway.) Last, but certainly not least, lame unarmed security kills. Thus, Umpqua Community College becomes yet another tragic case in point, proving once again, that about 90% of mass shootings have occurred in places where innocent victims were forced to be disarmed and defenseless. Will any politicians, institutions or corporations learn the lesson this time? Yes, I too am deeply saddened by the losses at UCC. I care. I have made protecting and aiding people my career. But I do more than express sadness, I try to wake people up to reality and common sense, in true hope of preventing or limiting future attacks.
