This was my first time using CALDA, and I trusted that the directory would connect me with a professional legal document assistant for an important legal document project. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. The issue involved a CALDA-listed legal document preparer, **Sergo G.** In my experience, he did not uphold his own document agreement, did not complete the work as agreed, and became combative, insistent, and inappropriate in his communications. I had already paid him half of the money, yet the document work was not completed as promised. This was not a routine document request where timing was flexible. The work involved an urgent ex parte application connected to an ongoing U.S. federal court case. Because of that urgency, I repeatedly reached out for updates and clarification when the work was not being completed as expected. What made the experience worse was the communication after I reported the issue. A CALDA representative/director contacted me, gave me her email, and said she would reach out to Sergo G. and let me know what was going on. I appreciated the initial call because it made me believe CALDA would take the complaint seriously. CALDA has since responded and stated that my complaint was forwarded to its Professional Standards Chairperson and Committee under its internal complaint process. I appreciate that confirmation, and I understand that CALDA is not a government agency or regulatory body. However, my concern remains that the communication was not clear or timely enough given the urgency of the document work and the seriousness of the issue. This was my first experience with CALDA, and it left me feeling unsupported during a time-sensitive legal filing issue. I believe CALDA had an opportunity to turn a negative first experience into a positive one by providing clearer status updates, helping identify another qualified document assistant if possible, and giving more meaningful consumer support once a listed member failed to complete urgent agreed work. My disappointment is not only with Sergo G., but with CALDA's lack of clear follow-through and communication after being notified. When an organization maintains a directory of legal document assistants, consumers reasonably expect professionalism, accountability, and meaningful response when a listed participant fails to complete agreed work or treats a consumer poorly. My advice to anyone considering CALDA.org is: **research, research, research.** Review the specific person you are hiring. Review their background, registration, reviews, contract, payment terms, and communication style. Make sure the contract is clear, makes sense, and matches the work being promised. Do not pay the full amount upfront unless you are completely comfortable. Consider paying in stages, reviewing the work carefully, and only releasing final payment after you are satisfied with the completed document. However, the very few times that I have interacted with the managers and supervisors that work here were very AWFUL and UNPROFESSIONAL. I have done at least one or two jobs per month for a year with Excel. The 2 times I ran into an issue during the jobs, I had to report it to Excel Agency managers. Both times I spoke with a female manager/supervisor. And both times she treated me very rudely and unprofessionally. As if I was a child, let alone an employee, let alone an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR. In the second encounter, I immediately asked her to remove me off her interpreters list. I'd rather be an independent contractor that works with an agency that treats them as INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS not children.
