We like to seek out the unusual things to see and do in every city we visit. We read about this marker and set out to find it. Even the guides could not tell us where it was. But, fortunately, I saw a street cleaner and asked him where it was, and he took us right to it. It is a large round marker in the Piazza Della Signoria in the middle of the square near the Neptune Fountain. It is now a faded red in color. The square was the headquarters of public executions, one rather famous being on May 23, 1498, when Girolamo Savonarola was hung and burned at the stake after having received a heresy sentence. read more
