Absolutely loved our tour and seeing muskox in close proximity and reindeers. The tour was very informative and we got to touch and hold a reindeer antler. I think this is a must stop for all animal lovers. I got many gifts from the gift shops too. read more

For me and Gayle, getting to UAF's Large Animal Research Station was half the "fun". We were at the UAF bookstore, where Gayle indicated that it was only a 2+ mile walk. What she didn't see was that much of it was through the woods on often wet and buggy trails. We made it, and were very thankful to the 2 gentlemen from Toronto who gave us a ride back to our Hotel. During our visit, we really only saw the hind ends of 2 Musk Ox and at a distance. We were told that seeing the Reindeer required one of their scheduled tours. However, the gift shop (featuring Musk Ox "kisses" and their yarn related products) was cool, as were the University-associated folks running the show. read more

Enjoyed a $10 tour with a guide who explained the Station's purpose for protecting and caring for reindeer, muskoxen and of all things the exotic Alaskan cow. Fun to watch the babies with their mommas and learn about how the muskox sheds his undercoat and how the wool is plucked for sweaters, hats, etc. The yarn is luxuriously soft and very expensive but absolutely worth every penny. The gift shop sells all sorts of woolen items and trinkets. Large viewing area, separate pens and plenty of space to walk around. Enjoy a picnic with a view of the animals (if they're not at the far end of the pasture). Friendly and knowledgeable guides, loads of parking and easy to find. Worth a visit to learn about the research and care for the animals. I learned that willow is the muskoxens favorite munchie, its packed with copper necessary for their diet. read more

So glad my roomie added this to our itinerary, because it's something I would have never even thought about doing. Getting up close and personal with the muskox and reindeer was super cool and being able to learn about them from graduate students that are super passionate about their work made it that much more fun. Definitely go support this research station and drop a few bucks at their gift shop to support this awesome gem that's part of the University of Alaska. read more

A terrific, easy walk in a (literally) pastoral setting. The place has restricted hours, so look ahead. I knew it would be closed when I went, but enjoyed my walk and long-distance viewing anyway. read more

Best Time Ever. This is the NICEST place I have been to in a long time and our little family of three had a very special time.

Learned a lot of facts about muskox, reindeer and caribou. The baby muskox were fun to watch them play. I only wish the tour involved going further back on the property to see the older herd. read more

Just visited this research facility of beautiful rolling hills with Muskoxen and Reindeer. Great, informative tour with Matt, cool items in the gift shop, and the most adorable Muskoxen babies! Six this year and so cute - they run down the hill to greet the tour. Facility is impeccably clean and staff care tremendously for their animal charges. A must see when in Fairbanks! read more
