I called to get some information about a drum skin for a homemade drum. I got great advice that solved the problem!

We were referred to Lark in the morning by another music shop. We had an old autoharp we needed tuned and possibly repaired. Thorn the manager put us in touch with Steve. We brought the autoharp and a guitar in for repair. Steve examined both carefully. He explained what he discovered and what work he would do. He was friendly and very informative. We left the autoharp and guitar with him to repair. The price he quoted us seemed reasonable and fair. read more

Highly recommend visiting this hidden gem of the Bay Area! I just came in to find a kalimba, but was excited to see a plethora of unique and beautiful instruments. The owner was also very friendly and helpful and brought out options from the back for me. Not only was I able to test out and purchase a unique instrument in person, but I also got to discover and play with lots of new instruments that I probably won't find in other normal stores. Though I remember the name from long ago, I wandered into this place at random while ducking in from the rain. The pricing on the instruments with which I was familiar was quite fair. But I was completely unfamiliar with most of the instruments. Javanese Gamelan? I was an obvious lookie-loo, but the man at the counter encouraged me to tinker with the merchandise. I've been a "Lark" fan for many years. Have shopped their locations in Seattle, Mendicino and San Francisco. They got 'em: Dulcimers, Celtic harps, Digideroos, Bouzoukis, Mandolins, Oboes, Sharmas, Lutes, penny whistles, gongs, gamelans, african xylophones, etc.... 4 stars because it's a one of kind music store with reasonable prices. I was able to test out and buy a great Irish bouzouki-- where else can i do that? I could buy one on eBay, or Amazon, sure, but who knows what sort of garbage you'd get. Why Not 5 stars? because by the time I finally visited in 2021 Lark of the Morning was reduced to a shell of its former glory: Small store, limited selection, so-so service. i would not recommend this store for on-line purchases. After paying for a rather expensive item using PayPal, They shipped me out a defective item, and later told me that they would not honor a return, as they only have a "3 day return policy". Returning the item within the 3 day period was impossible, as I live across the country. The owner suggested a fix to the item which made the defect worse. The owner then indicated that I had created the defect. I appealed to both Paypal and to the manufacturer; both ruled in my favor. read more

Had some damage with the first part (box one of two) of my Rose Wood Music Stand, but Thorn quickly mailed replacement parts, provided an incentive and made it right. They obviously care. The EMS Victoria Music Stand is beautiful. It is fine furniture with a practical application (I am a trombonist). I will buy more from them. read more

What a fantastic musical instrument store! This place has everything that you could possibly want if you're a folk musician. The selection is great and the knowledgeable staff will demonstrate on the instruments and give you some basic instruction so that you can try it out and be an informed buyer. What a magical shop to discover, I highly recommend taking a looksie. The staff are so kind and helpful, and the place is packed with interesting world instruments of all kinds and sizes. I found myself agawk and will have to be back, it's too much to take in all at once. A small selection it is not. Great place to pick up a gift for a musician or kid. Lots of small instruments, like bells, shakers and things I've never seen. I saw an earlier reviewer complain about low quality instruments, but I think what they didn't get is that while the shop does carry many affordable imports, they also have higher end items from well reputed artists. I don't know if it's true for every category, but for example I went in to look at irish flutes and while they had imports, they also had a flute by a recommended american flutemaker. Another example is handpans. They had low price options (essentially steel tongue drums) and they had an actual "hang drum" made by a well-reputed california artist. These take many hours to tune properly, and play like a dream, so no surprise it was four times the price. All in all I highly recommend checking it out, I don't like the experience I have at the ubiquitous big music stores, where the employees feel like they're waiting for me to leave when I'm trying bongos, so they can get back to...? In contrast, this was a special place, and felt very nice to visit. I appreciated their hospitality and relaxing atmosphere. read more

This place is awesome. Huge selection of folk instruments, many that you have probably never heard of, ranging in quality from beginner models to professional grade at a wide price range. You'll definitely leave with something you love. Store owner is incredibly nice and helpful and on the several occasions I have visited I felt very welcome. Very nice to be able to play the instruments as well and you are invited to do so here. All the instruments are tuned which shows the care that is put into this shop.
