From Merida the bus costs 250 pesos, is about 3 hrs trip and drops you right in the center of Lagartos. Upon arrival, sign up for a river tour and ask for Jesus! He's a guide that truly cares about your experience from start to finish and adds about an hour to his tours since "you can't do it in 2" according to him. The guys said it must have rotted but I think it wasn't nailed properly. Completely unacceptable. I was livid to say the least. He could've fallen back, hit his head and died. If a child had stepped there instead of him they would've fallen and died. Just terrible.

Staying in Playa, we took a day, private yacht trip to Isla. So fun…read more Ignore the hour jet skis halfway to Isla or the snorkeling. When we arrived, it felt like my visits to the Islands in Thailand. Golf carts, sand, souvenir shops (barter), bars and restaurants. We rented a golf cart and put putted around the area. I highly recommend. I know we did it like a tourist but will be back to explore the island and stay several nights. You should too.

Lots of businesses on the beach which served drinks and food. There are no public (and free) seating from what we saw...all chairs belong to a business which will charge $40+ USD to use alone. Many will provide free seating if you drink or dine with them....so research and plan accordingly if you plan on staying at the beach.

The white sand, turquoise Caribbean water, and incredible ocean views make it such a lovely place to relax. I really enjoyed the peaceful feeling of sitting by the water, listening to the waves and feeling the sea breeze. The beach is also beautiful around sunset--the colors of the sky over the Caribbean are unforgettable. A great place to walk, take photos, enjoy the ocean, or simply sit and relax. Definitely worth visiting if you're in Cancún!

That's what you get at Xcacel. I didn't detect any crazy rip tides or strong currents - and went about a mile off shore - far enough that to lose sight of landmarks to return to the beach (forget about remembering where clothing, sandals and water bottle!). I did not see any turtles here but I did see a lot of fish - it was fantastic. One of the best beach experiences I have had in my life - I will definitely go back. This is a DIY, advanced level snorkeling and swimming beach. There are tours showing up with the occasional busload of people to see the tiny cenote and to trek onto the beach but - the beach is so big - I really didn't see many other people. There are no services - just a kiosk on the driveway for your donation/entry fee. Bring your own EVERYTHING.

We snorkeled on our own and saw quite a few fish and a barracuda. We didn't see any turtles, but it's possible that we just weren't looking in the right place. There's also a small cenote in the back with a ton of fish. I liked that the price of admission was low enough that we didn't feel compelled to spend too much time in the cold cenote water. The location is kind of hard to spot from the road. There's just one small banner with a picture of a turtle on it on the side of the road, and by the time you see it, it's probably too late to turn in.
