It's a rarity to find a pub or bar in the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise where the staff actually enjoy working there. It definitely makes a difference to the venue's vibe! The bar staff also enjoy a good chat and a bit of banter across the bar and this is one of the few Irish pubs in Surfers that actually employees Irish people! Not only adding to the atmosphere, but it means there are staff who can actually pour a good pint of Guinness! There is live music most nights of the week from 9pm, with a band on every Friday and Saturday night. True to their roots there is also traditional Irish entertainment there every Sunday afternoon. In terms of food it has a great range of pub style food at great prices. I've found the food to always be amazing, even the specials (usually $10-15) are spot on! You definitely can't go past the $10 steaks that they do for lunch and dinner! One of the main things that I LOVE about the food here is that they stick to what they're good at; good quality pub-style food at a reasonable price! This is a great pub that caters for everyone, from families, to older couples and young 20-somethings looking for a good night out, there is something for everyone in Fiddlers. Koi Restaurant looked very full and the menu was promising but we were politely advised there would be a 20 minute wait for a table. Next door we scoped out Bin 89 and managed to snake a couple who took a few more minutes perusing the menu. We knew our options were closing out fast so we made a dash to land the last table in the whole place. A pokey little two-seater right next to the service desk. Not ideal, but we were smug. The wait staff were welcoming and quick to offer us water and menus. We were able to order cocktails quickly. I had the Purple People Eater which was initially a little strong, but mellowed with the melting ice and the boy had a red wine served in a mini-caraffe - I don't know if it was the sheer size of the glass, but it looked like a teeny tiny serving. We decided quickly on our food order. I went with "small plates" of salmon mousse (served on a half shell), beef taco and salt and pepper calamari. I have a small appetite at the best of times and being gluten free, I had limited (but clearly labelled!) options. The boy went with the rib eye fillet and red wine jus with mash. Very manly (and typical) of him to order meat and potatoes. My salmon mousse was to-die-for. Like, lick the shell clean good. I was making very raunchy noises and my date had to tell me to tone it down it was so fabulous. I considered ordering a second, but remembered I had two more dishes coming. The calamari was so-so. The mayonnaise was fine and creamy, and the batter wasn't too thick and had the right amount of crunch.. the squid was soft and not rubbery at all it was just.. boring. And oily. And very meh. Then the taco arrived. It was a thing of beauty. The shredded beef was spiced to perfection where my mouth felt slightly warm but not obnoxiously hot. The accompaniment in the soft corn tortilla cut through the heavy meat and added delicious texture. I regret not recording the description somewhere as I really have no idea what ingredients they used. Too many cocktails before dinner perhaps? Regardless I enjoyed the ambience, wait-staff and menu items so much I want to go back immediately. Or whenever we have an excuse to spend a weekend on the coast and dine out.

Naturally we had to visit one of their facilities on this trip, and he planned our drive around Gold Coast to visit the original taproom. It was a weekend afternoon so it was super quiet, just one other customer. The bartender was immediately welcoming and eager to talk and pour. It's a smaller location in a commercial plaza, with open doors and two sections: the bar and a few tables, and an event area with barrels and tables. They had a big selection of to-go beer as well. I had a flight of favorite styles and wasn't disappointed in any of them. Great quality and selection overall. If you're a beer fan and vacationing in Gold Coast, this is a must visit. Lovely thin crust and classically simple... just the way I like it. I think it would be great if they offered beer and cheese pairings with the cheese shop next door or in general.
