Very good cafe in a very beautiful area. Food was fairly good from my last visit. Indoor decor was very beautiful!

We came here on the recommendation of our tour guide who said they have one of the best apple pies in town. It was within short walking distance to our hotel & we had a little bit of time before our train left. We walked into the shop and I swear -- cutest little coffee shop EVER. The vintage decor that covers Latei from every nook and cranny fit so well together and really adds to the atmosphere. They also have the cutest little black cat that was very interested in my husband.... who is highly allergic to cats, lol. Still cute. The service was friendly and quick. We ordered our apple pies for breakfast and were quickly on our way. I wish we had more time to spend here because the vibe was so chill and the seating areas were so cute upstairs and downstairs. However, we enjoyed our apple pies on our train ride to Brussels. It's been a few years, but next time we're in Amsterdam, we'll save a bit more time to hangout in this shop! read more

Cute atmosphere. Wonderful staff. Had Apple Pie and Soy Latte. Soy was unsweetened which was great. Gave me glass of water with coffee too which was nice. One of the few places in city that gave out water. Apple pie loaded with fresh apples. No sugar/junk filler. Really nice fresh texture and flavor. Free WiFi too :) A quaint stop. This is a very unique place....the environment is eclectic but the service is really nice. We ordered the goat for dinner. Like the restaurant itself, the meal was unique, with an interesting combination of lotus root and other things. While the food wasnt outstanding, we enjoyed the uniqueness of it. My boyfriend and I decided to give Latei a try one afternoon. We had the appeltaart at Winkel 43 and he had been craving one ever since. A quick Yelp search revealed that Latei happened to be located in the area we were roaming about, and they had the appeltaart! We were in luck! Or so we thought... It was definitely not as good. The filling had raisins in it, the crust was hard, and it didn't even taste that great overall. Maybe their other items are better, I can't speak to that. But if you want an appeltaart and you're in this area, you should just make the trek to Winkel 43. read more

Incredibly cozy, local cafe. Don't let the location in the RLD dissuade you. Super delicious homemade food (lots of plant-based options) and great coffee. The space itself is also one of the best for meeting a small group, catching up with a friend, of just going alone to draw or do work. Lots of locals and interesting characters around Staff is incredible, helpful and cheery. Haven't visited since 4 years to find all the same charm and spirit in tact. I really miss places like this... While visiting in Amsterdam, I found this place was a hot spot, you know where all the international hipsters hang out. It is in Chinatown (which is small in Amsterdam) but no Chinese people to be found in here (well, except for me)... It was cold out and rainy when I came here on a weekend afternoon. I had just popped into the Buddhist temple across the street (review to come) and was frozen to the bone and needed to warm up. This place is packed with people and all the windows were fogged up, so really warm and cozy. I ordered a soy latte and a vegetable hummus sandwich and then proceeded to look around for a table. Nothing was available on the first floor. So, I go up the narrow stairs and find a nice couch and plop down immediately. All the tables and chairs are a hodge podge of things from the 70s past. Check out the kitschy wallpaper and all the furniture and decorations are on sale. Cool beans. My food arrived shortly and I gobbled down the hummus sandwich and washed it all down with a nice soy latte (yea, no dairy)! I lounged around a bit more, read through my Time Out Amsterdam guide to find the next place to explore and jotted a few things in my notebook about the place. Looking back 4 months now, this is what I wrote,"lots of light fixtures hanging from the ceiling, interesting Finnish wallpaper, and so many paintings, makes you wonder if you are in a thrift store?" De Wallen Cute coffee place that is worth a visit when in the neighborhood. The vintage atmosphere there is very nice and the objects you see inside are for sale. Interesting lamps. They serve (good) Bocca coffee and pastries, breakfast which are home made. I know because the smell of cooking can came too strong in some moments. Great espresso drinks and dessert, super friendly staff! Try the chocolate ganache or the carrot cake, and a cappuccino as well. This was listed as "permanently closed" on some unnamed map services, but as of April 2019 it is very much open. It is small, so there may not be a table, but check for seating upstairs as well. read more

Cute little hybrid between a cafe' and a flea market. Very close to the red light district, in the cafe' everything is for sale, from the cappuccino to the cake, through to the chairs you sit on and the lamps on the ceiling (and perhaps the waiters as well? LOL). The place is very original and the cakes were gooooooood. read more

I lOVE LATEI's decor! So retro! So colorful! And they have a black cat, just hanging out there. It's a very fun place to have break with their coffee and some sweets. Their Dutch apple pie was OK. Love this place - clearly a local joint. Reminds me of one of the first coffeeshops/Cafes I fell in love with in the US called EVP. Having the breakfast special - Cheese and tomato on a wonderful hardy bread, fresh squeezed OJ, croissant, and latte all for 9 Euros. Oh there is at least one shop cat I saw asleep on somebody's computer sleeve. There is free wifi - the service is fantastic. It appears that many of the fixtures, do dads, etc adorning the shop are for sale. This place is funky and I like it! read more

Amsterdam, a city perfect for my favorite pass time of intentionally getting lost and aimlessly wandering the streets by foot. One late night I passed by Latei's big window with pink Rock N Roll painted at eye level and silver bric-a-brac hanging from the ceiling. Shiny things! "Oh, it's a cafe," I realized after seeing they had a espresso bar and a nook of a kitchen. In the window hand scrawled on scrap paper was a sign reading, and I quote, "Oh yes, we've got those fluffy homemade Pancakes you've been looking for." I would be back in the morning. The place was packed. I didn't hear a lick of English, which is nice in such an international city. I walked up their creaky stair case to see if a seat was available but nothing was open for a single. I smiled and shrugged my shoulders at a staffer by the counter cleaning a glass and made my way for the door. In hurried Dutch, switching over to English quickly with my crossed eyed face, the staffer told me to just share a table someone, and please stay. I was real chuffed at such an invitation. The menu has a good number of option on it, mostly cafe fair for breakfast and lunch seekers with hours to kill with friends or a paper in hand. Everything in Latei, antiques and bric-a-brac alike, is for sale which can get you staring at the walls like you were in a coffee shop, if you catch my drift. I ordered a coffee and a roasted egg plant sandwich which I had seen someone else eat, pointed to, and said 'gimme what she got'. Apple pie in Amsterdam is every cafe's secret favorite thing to make and serve. It ain't our sugary orgy of liquid-mummified apple slices grinding and sliding all over each other. Apple pie in the Netherlands is a perfect representation of itself; like stacked brick or cobblestone, organized looking but ease and somehow with antiquity, sweet enough but more straight forward saying to our mouths "Yes, I am Apple, and nothing else." And with more cinnamon. I pushed my time into the afternoon getting another coffee then a fresh mint tea. Worth every Euro. You'd like this place if: You like Mom & Pop shops with a hippy/punk edge, are a sucker for DIY gimmicks, are keen for being surrounded by beautiful Dutch folks discussing politics and their how great their lives are (I'm guessing) Character: Cutesy but not just feminine, like sitting down to eat in a Stereolab album Service: Warm, attentive, feels like a family run shop. Though expect the place to be busy so no being timid about catching the server attention. They'll appreciate it. Food: European and Eastern. Caters to flesh manger's and vegan persuasions alike. Stopped in for a latte because I saw they had plant milk, but ended up ordering the Gado Gado (w/out the boiled egg) because "I could eat." This is a quirky little cafe tucked into an unassuming spot on Zeedijk. With mismatched chairs, and novelties everywhere, Latei has a distinctly bohemian feel to it. Their is a black cat that wanders around, who I'm assuming from the "Elvis does not leave the building" signs, must be called Elvis. The food is simple enough, with lots of light fair and some organic offerings. I've only been for lunch, but I understand they have a dinner menu that changes all the time and I've very interested in trying it. They also offer lots of fresh pressed juices that are all very tasty! The prices are incredibly reasonable (3-5 euros for sandwiches; about the same for an omelet) and the staff is all very friendly too. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite little lunch spots. read more

I ducked in here one freezing winter day to get out of the cold with my visiting American friend shortly after I moved here. What we found was a cozy warm very populated cafe, with good music and hip people. We really liked our drinks, and I loved the croissant I ordered. But my American friend kind of got uncomfortable with the upstairs area which was so full of people everyone was touching elbows. I thought it was a charming European show of warm gezelligheid, he thought it was a claustrophobic infringement on his personal space. To each his own I guess. This is a quirky little place with lots of lamps on the ceiling, very retro furniture and my 6ft 2 husband felt quite the giant sitting upstairs looking down as we felt like we were in some sort of child's tea party setting. There are many retro kitchen bits and bobs for sale and lots to look at if you are grabbing a coffee alone. The cappuccino and carrot cake is what I had. I thought the carrot cake was maybe a little pricey at around €3.50 but the slab they gave me was huge and enough for two and it was the best carrot cake I've had in a long time. You could see the grated carrot but the cake was moist like it had alcohol in it like a fruit cake without the taste just carrot cake juicy heaven with a frosting that was a mix between marshmallow and meringue. Although it's been a while since I visited Amsterdam, the memory of Latei's breakfast still shines out! Dishevelled and disgruntled from wearing a hangover, my pal and I had a wee roam around this neighbourhood, passing lurid diner after lurid diner. Not in the mood to start drinking so early, all we wanted was a breakfast. Latei delivered on that front. I remember being most bowled over by the price - a gorgeous croissant with cheese was under 5 Euro's, and a massive mug of tea was just the kick start we needed. As well as selling very reasonably priced, tasty food, Latei is a no frills diner in the style of old 50s rock and roll places. The decor doesn't match, the shelves are stuffed with precariously leaning teapots, the wallpaper looks like it's not been changed since the 70s and the plastic coated tables with uneven chairs are chipping. Altogether, it works and is one of the more stylish, cool "hipster" hangouts in Centruum. Great if you want a cup of tea and are a fan of old style tearooms like I am! Love it! Everything I look for in a cafe. Fair prices, interesting menu, a cosy atmosphere and wonderful, friendly staff. I visit Latei every time I'm in Amsterdam. It's right in the centre of the city but you feel calm and away from it all once you step through the door. Sit by the window for some interesting people watching or go upstairs and lose yourself in the wonderful decor and company. A lovely range of teas which I really enjoy and delicious cakes. I was here at beginning of April, for a first date, and it was a cute place. The coffee was not great, but the food was pretty good (if a little overpriced in my opinion.) This was probably the friendliest customer service I have experienced in all of the Netherlands (maybe he had just eaten a special brownie- or maybe he was actually happy to be working there), and I would definitely return on that basis alone. read more

I took a solo trip to Amsterdam, and spent a lovely rainy afternoon in this cute cafe. There's a cat wandering around and delicious coffee and sandwiches. The staff is keen to hang back and not rush you, which I really appreciated as I read my book and enjoyed the atmosphere. As other yelpers noted, the decor is mostly all vintage for sale. Returned again and just as pleasant again. The place has increased its business volume though and people a couple of times would come check for seats and not find them. People seemed happy to share a table though which my friend and I did with another patron. Once again had excellent coffee and delicious freshly squeezed orange juice. The interior was still the same with lots of bric-a-brac all over. Once again I had the uitsijter and thought it was the perfect breakfast for walking. Headed to Latei last night, expecting Ethiopian for two like the photo here and were pleasantly surprised by a different menu. They are doing a Indo-Dutch fusion kind of thing and it it DELICIOUS! I've posted a pic of our meal. Lots of love on that plate. It would have been nice to pair it with a beer or glass of wine but they've gone non-alcoholic and offered other yummy things to drink. Camomile tea with apple pie afterward was perfect! The atmosphere is funky-awesome - very warm and colorful. The place is small, kind of funky and all of the kitschy objects [ceiling fixtures, bric a brac, small tables] in the restaurant are for sale. Options include eggs over toast, homemade apple pie, multiple options for coffee and soup and sandwich combos. My friend and I both got coffee and cheese omelettes. Ever time I'm in the city of freedom I patronize this joint. Great bread. Great coffee. Great mornings. The bread is that fresh baked kind that makes you feel loved and special and like you can't wait to get this day started. I can already taste the mouthwatering food now. As an added bonus, the place looks like an old light shop set in an attic from the 1960s and never updated, with unique colors and things hanging from the ceiling. I write this as I sit in Latei for the third time in two days during my solo trip to Amsterdam, across from my new Dutch boyfriend, Elvis the cat. I have nothing but good things to say. The first time I came here I was greeted by a very friendly server who, after a conversation about missing my pets, told me he'd make my coffee while I went to sit with Elvis the cafe cat. I was unsure of what to order so I just picked the croissant with goat cheese. He asked if I wanted tomato, salt, pepper, and olive oil as well, and I definitely said yes. It was without a doubt the best croissant sandwich I've ever had. Buttery, flakey croissant, fresh, firm tomato, and salty but creamy goat cheese... Mmmm! It's also what I had today. The coffee is wonderful as well. Since coming to Amsterdam I've gone back to my old ways of drinking my coffee black, and it tastes just as good as with cream. I also came back here last night. It started to get too dark for me to explore on my own, so I decided to come hang out here instead of just sitting in my hostel. Even though I was stuffed from Thai food, I ordered a hot chocolate to be polite and let me tell you: *no regrets*. It tasted as good as it looked. It had still unmelted chunks of chocolate at the bottom, the cup was steaming hot, and the whipped cream was the perfect topper. I will more than likely come back tonight for another one. The service here is wonderful. All the employees more than kind. I always feel bad making them go up and down those teeny steps to bring me a second cup of coffee. More than anything, I love the vibe of this place. Every time I'm hear I feel like an Amsterdam native. It's cozy, warm, and inviting. Even when it's busy (which I've noticed it is after 10:30am for breakfast and after 7pm for dinner/dessert) I never feel like they are annoyed with me spending hours here catching up on writing and blogging or doing school work. When I leave Monday I will really miss this place. I'm already thinking of making plans to come back to Amsterdam because I've fallen in love with it here (Amsterdam, that is, but of course Latei too). read more

ohmygod THE BEST LATTE I HAVE EVER HAD I HAD HERE. Didn't need to add sugar, just the perfect ratio of espresso to milk and froth - and I HATE milk froth. SO DELICIOUS. And I don't like pie, but I figured I would try the Dutch Apple pie. I was floored. It wasn't too sweet, but it tasted perfectly of baked apples and cinnamon. SO GOOD. It's on a quiet street a hop away from the busier area of the RLD, and it's a throw away from Nieuwmarkt. Perfect location. It's quiet, has free Wifi, and is very relaxed and charming. Another place that my friend's "Lonely Planet" book recommends. So we tried it. Not bad at all. I like the decor and the atmosphere, very cozy. Waiters are nice and friendly. the coffee and sandwich is just o.k. It's right around the red light district and "coffee houses". But this one is decent and no smoking allowed. Seriously, if you want a good sandwich, go to Albert Hein and make it yourself instead. But if you want to sit and relax after walking around the Dam, this is a great place to grab lunch or a snack. read more
