Launceston Airport (LST), originally known as Western Junction Aerodrome, officially opened on 28 February 1931 with a single grass airstrip. It is Tasmania's second busiest airport (after Hobart) and is located about 15 kilometers south of the Launceston CBD. Gayle and I were her to take a Virgin Australia flight from here to Melbourne. LST is small with 4 gates downstairs, easy check-in, straightforward security, and a few interesting shops. There's really no need to get here to early. read more
A tidy small airport just south of Launceston. No need to get here too early for the short flight to Melbourne-here's the scoop: -check in desk opens 90 minutes ahead of flight departure time, although people started lining up a bit ahead -there's only a handful of flights and they arre pretty spread out so it will be just the people on your flight and maybe one other in the large common waitting area where there's plenty of seating -inside security there's one cafe for premade sandwiches, coffee and drinks -there's also a nice store with wine, souvenirs, magazines etc -that's it -wait for your plane to be called then head dowwnstairs to the gates (there are only 4) -also, if returning a rental car, you've got to go inside to the desks in baggage claim read more
Not great but not bad as well. It's relatively clean/ smell-free. Security line is horrible. Everyone seems to be traveling for the first time.... Food/ drinks available before/ after security. read more
It's not great. But it does allow planes to land. Which in my view is a great start for an airport. It's also only a few (15ish) mins to the city (and I do mean the term 'city' loosely) centre. DO NOT BRING FRUIT OR VEG!!! read more
I remember when launceston airport was basically a shed with a low fence holding you back off the runway. They had a great viewing and greeting area back then and I loved watching the planes come in through the faded greeny-brown 70's style glass as a kid. Fresh off renovations I really like the new terminal. More coffee options and enough seating, it is a good modern regional airport. It's only 5-10 mins from the city but a taxi will set you back $30-$40+ which is a bit of a shame/scam... But to me it's just home. read more

Not the largest airport around but a large improvement on when I was a kid and the bags came out on a cart. There is a cafe style restaurant and a couple of Hudson's (both before and after security). Security can be on the slow side especially during peak time when people seem to completely forget what is required to clear security (ie empty your pockets before the metal detector) read more

I quite like this regional airport. Big glass windows overlooking golden fields. Some services but not too many. Yes. I chose this airport when I fly to Launceston. read more
I was expecting two bails of hay and a telephone booth but this modern building stands in comparison to most regional ports. Easy to get out of. On the way in was a woman asking if I had any fruit, I said no. She looked upset. I said thank you for your service and she smiled. The baggage area was crowded tho but I had carry-on baggage. read more

Nothing wrong, just small. But Easy to get in and out. Plenty of space. Clean. Good signage. Plenty of Tables and regular airport seats for waiting to go through security before boarding. Nice views of outside terrain. read more

This is an airport for a regional city so nothing fancy should be expected. The airport is just like a large clean shed with check ins one side, baggage claim the other, and shops and gates in the centre. There is only one cafe, one restaurant, a tiny cart that sells boags beer on tap, and a gift shop. There isn't much entertainment here so I recommend not checking in early and waiting. There is a large selection of seats if you do decide to wait but they won't make waiting any more comfortable. It's a small empty airport but it does its job well and lines aren't a problem here. read more

Longest line I have ever experienced at any airport. 1 screening point clearly not enough

History
Established in 1931.
On 28 February 2026, we celebrated 95 years since the opening of Launceston Airport, formally known as the Western Junction Aerodrome. The airport officially opened on 28 February 1931, with Controller of Civil Aviation, Lieutenant Colonel, H. C. Brinsmead, O.B.E., M.C., pronouncing the aerodrome open. Around 15,000 people flocked to the airport to view RAAF Wapiti Fighters and Gipsy Moths conduct aerobatic displays as part of the opening. Since then, the airport has grown from just six flights per week, in the airport’s first year of operation, to 400 weekly flights to five non-stop destinations. 95 years later we proudly celebrate this milestone achievement and reflect back on the airport’s history.
