Deciding it was about time to start taking advantage of my health insurance, I scoured the interweb for a doctor. After a horrible experience with a local gyno (where she convinced me that I was depressed -I'm not, it's called PMS- and needed to be on happy pills), I've been a bit skeptical of docs. After reading Julia's review, however, I decided Dr. P sounded like my kinda woman, "someone I would love to have a beer with?" say no more. So I scheduled my appointment on Friday and they were able to put me in on Monday. I showed up at 3:30 (my assigned time), fearing I'd end up spending my entire afternoon there. Within 10 minutes I was seen by a nurse and within another 5 Dr. P showed up. She's just awesome. Totally conversational, quick to put you at ease, thorough... We talked about my medical history, she ran through a few exams, prescribed some medicine for my nagging cough, and sent me off for some blood work. I was out of the office by 4:15! She also referred me to a new gyno and dentist. All in all, Dr. P is terrific, thanks Yelp. read more

I love Dr. P. Yes, she is a smart, compassionate, thorough physician, but she is also someone I would love to have a beer with. She has a great attitude and takes time with her patients. I can't really ask for anything else in a primary care doctor: she's great, you can get an appointment that isn't 3 months from now, and her staff are nice too. I mentioned that a friend had referred me to Dr. Picciano, and they asked me who, knew exactly who she was, and told me to tell her hi - just a nice courtesy that you don't encounter too often at the doctor's office. read more

Dr. Picciano saved my life. This is true. I was having severe stomach pain for weeks and went to several other doctors who told me nothing was wrong. She spent time talking, being thorough and caring. She referred me for a test upon my insistance. Cancer. YIKES! After surgery and chemotherapy, 4 years later I am alive and normal again. I am a firm believer that she is amazing. She visited me everyday in the hospital. WOW. Who does that? She is real. She is down to earth. You can tell her anything and never feel like she is judging you or doesn't understand. If you are embarassed about something going on or are just new to Philly or have gone somewhere else and not been thrilled, go see her. The place is clean, professional, thorough, and she is great. Dr. Picciano is the best. I've been going to her for about 4 years now and I have zero complaints. Her office staff are friendly and I've never had to wait more than a few minutes in the waiting room. Also you can generally call for an appointment and be seen within a week or so. Dr. Picciano is very thorough and takes the time to listen while keeping the appointment within a reasonable time. You never feel rushed and she immediately puts you at ease with her warm and friendly personality. I was referred to Dr. P. by a coworker a few years ago and I'm glad I took him up on the recommendation. I couldn't ask for anything more in a primary care physician. read more

As stated below, Dr Picciano really is the best! I have been going to her for about 5 years now and I've never had anything less than a really positive experience. One of the most amazing things is her ability to keep her appointments on time. I have never waited in the waiting room for more than 10 minutes. She always sees you promptly, which I appreciate. I can't really say the same for most other health care practitioners I have seen in my life. The office staff are friendly and if you are sick, you can usually get an appointment squeezed in within a few days. Dr Picciano is very personable and cool to talk to. You will feel like you are visiting with an old friend during the appointment. She is also smart and thorough and will go above and beyond for any request you have. Last year I was going out of the country and needed several unusual vaccines and medications. She wrote prescriptions for me so I didn't have to pay the high fees at the travel medicine clinic and even called my pharmacy to request that they order special products for me. Most doctors would not "have time" for things like that. She has the ability to stay on time with her schedule while never making you feel rushed while you are with her. She seems to truly care about your health and I'd encourage anyone to go to her. read more

Dr. Picciano is fantastic as a PCP. She is considerably more compassionate and thorough than any other physician I have had, and genuinely seems to care about her patients. I've had hypertension for a number of years, and many physicians have just written it off since I am "young" and "healthy" but she was concerned and had me get further testing done. From these tests, she found the root of the problem and has addressed it accordingly. She is extremely easy to talk to and is not condescending or pretentious like many other physicians I have encountered. She is also extremely punctual and always sees patients on time. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Picciano for about a year. She's ok. I'm not a fan of her bedside manner, but I'd stick around if I didn't have to wait 30-90 minutes every time I see her. It's outrageous to keep a patient waiting that long. I'm researching new doctors in my area because I can't tolerate the wait times. I don't recommend going to her or anyone at the Ripa Center unless you have a lot of extra time on your hands and like spends hours in waiting rooms. read more

Unfortunately after waiting for almost two months to see Dr. Picciano, I am leaving her office in frustration and will be trying to find another doctor for my husband and I. This is so disappointing given I was certain I had found the right doctor after reading the reviews here, and because I am in tremendous pain from a shoulder strain that now I just have to wait out. Why? Well let me explain. After getting to the office early, I waited over an hour before they called me into the room and then was told I would have to wait an additional 30 minutes before I could be seen. I wasn't even going to be told how long my wait was once in the exam room and had to ask because I was starting to feel crunched for time. Normally I would wait considering I needed to establish a PCP and could hardly move my arm and neck, but I had an appointment at the vet I could not cancel without penalty and still had to pick up my car. The only way I could possibly do it would be to rush through the appointment I had waited 2 months for and even that was cutting it close.. What's even worse is that my only interaction with Dr Picciano was a pass through in the hallway where she seemed to be communicating to her staff in a stressed manner that I was either the wrong patient or was not welcome to come back yet. She didn't even once acknowledge my presence. This caused some confusion for the staff members to sort through and also left me feeling like I was putting her out, not the other way around. The poor woman helping me listened to my concerns, but it was obvious it was stressful for her too. I was left in he room and told I could either stay or go, while patient information was left open and accessible on the computer monitor in front of me. This made me more uneasy. Being a medical office, emergencies must happen all the time, although the staff kept saying this was unusual and delays are not often an issue. How well they are prepared to deal with these issues says a lot more than the run of the mill day, and I guess I can count myself lucky to have seen this from the get go. The gentleman at the front desk did tell me that she was running behind schedule, but only later did I hear that it was because of an emergency they did not know would take so long. All of this is understandable. What is not acceptable is that I wasn't even notified of the lengthly delay beforehand or during the waiting time in office. I could have rescheduled maybe, or asked to come back later. People were waiting behind me that probably would not have minded swapping appointments. I deal with delays all the time in my job. And despite what they say, I assume that this won't be the last emergency she has that causes delays. However, I do expect a level of service and respect I would give someone if roles were reversed, and this did not happen. Hopefully this review will provoke them to rethink how they deal with lengthly office delays so it doesn't happen to others. I would advise: try to call clients before they arrive if you can, get a good estimate on the waiting time, ask them if they have other appointments this can impact, noting the longest estimated time they may be waiting. If they are in pain, and maybe they should ask, say you will see what you can do to expedite things....(even if you can't, it makes us feel like you care). And god forbid Dr Picciano runs into a waiting patient in the hallway, smile, and thank them for their patience...then go ask the staff if they brought the right person back. I can go on and on.... But I think that sums it up. read more

This is a review that is more a reflection of the office staff than the doctor herself. Dr. Picciano was awesome! She was thorough and friendly. You just felt well-taken care of, and that she was always looking out for your best interest. I'm bummed that we've moved, and she is no longer my primary physician. That being said, however, I have had a nightmare of an experience with office staff/billing dept. There were several hiccups that I was willing to overlook but now it's nearly 6-7 months later, and the issue is not resolved. 1. I was scheduled for an appointment on Monday, January 16th. I even received a confirmation phone call the Friday prior. Well, I go to the hospital and it's CLOSED. It's MLK Day! I hadn't thought much about it till I stood in front of the door and realized it was a major holiday. No phone call following that day...nothing until I phoned back and said, "hey i was scheduled for yesterday but your office was closed." nice part was I was able to get another appt. the following week. 2. back in december when i went in for my first appt, i told dr. picciano that i wanted to get a woman's annual inspection (sorry don't want to divulge too much info.) and so she told me to go to the front desk to schedule another appt. Okay, great! so i went to the front with my file and scheduled another appt. PROBLEM: apparently doctors/staff/nurses don't communicate well. when i came back in January for my inspection, the nurse was like, "you didn't tell us. we dont have time to do it for you." what? i just had a convo at my last appt. and walked literally 100 ft. to the front to schedule another appt. apparently, i have to communicate what our doctor and i discussed to the office staff. it's not in my file?? the doctor didn't tell the nurse what i wanted to come back in for. Where's the communication?? 3. Jan. 24th - I come in, find out they didn't know i wanted an annual procedure so I waited for an hour in the waiting room for when the doctor had time to see me. Fine with me...I just wanted to get this done. Doctor comes in, does the procedure...helpful! it was great, for a procedure that can def. feel invasive. 4. Couple months later, I get a bill in the mail. I'm responsible for $117. What?!?! I thought. My ins. company is supposed to pay for it...it's considered a preventive service. 100% covered. What my ins. doesn't cover is office visits if we see the doctor for like reg. things (i.e. coughs, flu, etc.) and are still under a set deductible amount. 5. Called Dr. Picciano's office after some back and forth between them and insurance provider. This is what the office did when submitting claims to the billing dept: Your visit: office visit + exam + lab analysis. But my argument: well the office visit wasn't b/c i came in with a cough and needed care in that regards. i came in for the exam...it's all one visit. when i called the billing dept., they even said, "yeah it looks like you came in for the exam, and then a 2nd time for a reg. office visit." 6. After some back and forth, straightened it out with Picciano's office. Even got confirmation TWICE that the bill was submitted with an incorrect office code. IT IS A CLERICAL ERROR (told to me by office staff). I was assured that it would be taken care of, and if I didn't hear from them, I was fine. remember, I was told this TWICE over the phone. so after being reassured, i never heard from them again. 7. About a month later and some moving around, I received yet another bill in the mail for $117. I called Hahneman to find out the issue. They said the bill was STILL OUTSTANDING, and if I didn't pay it, it would go to collections. AND NOW I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING A BILL THAT IS DUE TO A CLERICAL ERROR. Also, I've called Hahneman several times recently - and I NEVER NEVER get phone calls returned. UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING FOR SUCH A GREAT DOCTOR!!! read more

I feel like Dr. Picciano cares about my health. She takes my complaints seriously and isn't shy about ordering a test or two - which I appreciate because I have a pretty high threshold of tolerance for symptoms before I drag myself to the office for some conventional medicine. And although she's not an integrative practitioner, I like that she's open-minded to alternative methods and has even said she's found acupuncture to be helpful to her personally. Her appointments generally run on time and she's always very warm and pleasant to interact with. Annnnd she's cool. She's done mixed martial arts training and she surfs. So the bottom line is that she's thorough, warm, and I like her as both a physician and as a human being. read more

I am 63 yrs old and I know what I need in a physician. They have to listen, work with you, take conservative approach and a female. Men doctors cannot empathize they never birthed, menstruated or dealt with menopause. There are very capable women physicians out there and since she joined Cooper Ripa Women's Center I am fortunate to have her as my doctor, the Ripa Center is an interdisciplinary approach to medicine for women and Dr.P is the best. read more

Dr. Picciano is an incredible person and doctor. She is extremely genuine and caring and offered me a lot of reassurance. Dr. Picciano made sure to follow up with me and even helped prepare a plan for when my health insurance was about to run out. Dr. Picciano is intelligent and competent but so down-to-earth. She has a great personality and I actually look forward to going to my appointments to see her! The entire office staff is very nice and personable. I never feel rushed or bothersome and I can completely rely on the team to answer my questions and get the information I need in a timely manner. I absolutely love this woman. Yesterday was my first visit with Dr. Picciano and I'm actually looking forward to seeing her again. I have a terrible fear of doctors and medical facilities - but Dr. Picciano is different. Instead of checking off boxes detailing your medical history on a piece of paper, Dr. Picciano takes the time to go through your medical history verbally with you. I felt like she had a real understanding of my health issues and how to remedy them. Her support staff is wonderful, they're so warm and helpful. My appointment was scheduled for 2:30. I checked in at 2:00, completed my paperwork, and was in the exam room right on time at 2:30. I spent an hour with Dr. Picciano and was out of there by 3:30. I actually found her right here on Yelp - I made an appointment with her immediately after reading all her great reviews. I'm so glad that I did - thanks, Yelp! read more

Dr. Picciano is a very personable caring doctor. I immediately felt comfortable with her. She takes her time and I have never felt rushed. I have been there twice so far and both times was seen on time for my appointment. Her staff were very nice and professional. However I keep getting bills stating that my insurance is not valid, I have called her billing service twice and they assure me they will fix it, but I just recieved another bill. I have been to 4 other doctors plus labs and xrays in the past 6 months without a billing issue, yet they can't get it right. This is the only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars. Hopefully they figure it out otherwise I will be forced to go to a different doctor. read more

Dr. Picciano is superb! I'm new to the area and I had to establish PCP care for my new job. I found her through my insurance company and then Yelp-ed her. With all of the good reviews, I had to try and visit her. I was amazed. She was willing to answer any question I had and was thorough. She doesn't push an agenda, but left it up to me to determine how I wanted to proceed. I saw her get along well with her staff. Even after a long night on call she was pleasant. She also is just a great person who is happy and loves her job. I heart Dr. Picciano. read more

After bad experiences with some previous doctors, I was really careful in shopping around for a new primary care provider. I was very lucky to find Laura Picciano. She listens to her patients, makes time for you, and knows what she's doing. Everyone there is friendly (including the security guard), and you can get an appointment very quickly, which is a huge plus by itself. It's also right off the Broad St line, so the location is convenient. I've only had good experiences dealing with her and everyone else at Hahnemann; it's quite the change from my typical doctor experience. I highly, highly recommend them (and Picciano in particular) for anyone looking for a primary care doctor. read more

Going by these amazing reviews, I was really looking forward to seeing Dr. Picciano. She sounded wonderful. I called to make an appointment, and was told that they were not accepting patients with no insurance, because they would be unable to make referrals. I said that I would be willing to pay the cash, and got told 'no'. unless I was given the wrong info, this just seems wrong to me. read more
