We had a great breakfast, virtual tour, and hike on the property. The new owners are so accommodating, we could not wait to come back and experience true mountain charm. So we immediately booked for the fall foliage. Guys they still had rooms and those rooms are gorgeous. This is a unique place to stay for a getaway in West Virginia. The Inn is located about 8 miles…read moredown a single-track, winding road, so it really feels off the grid. You look out your window at trees, forests, and ridges. The owners have created a warm, friendly environment, with many decorations that make for a rustic feel. Overall the Inn is a really nice place to stay, but here are a few things to consider: - The driveway is a lengthy (0.2-mile), gravel-covered, steep hill. We have an SUV and each time we went up the driveway our lights went on indicating unstable traction. Keep this in mind if you have a smaller vehicle or plan to go in the snowy months. - Breakfast is complimentary and dinner is provided for an additional fee ($30 per person per night and $45 on Saturdays). The food is delicious and all home-made. Ed is a fantastic chef - see many pics posted below. However, he makes a set amount of food per-person and there is no extra food. The first night we were there my wife and I had done a long hike in the afternoon and we were very hungry. Dinner was tasty but it was not enough food for us. When I asked if we could have more Ed said there was none. So consider your personal needs when thinking about meals. Since the Inn is so secluded, it is not easy to drive to a restaurant (20-30 minutes at least). - Breakfast is at 8am and dinner is at 7pm. This is a reasonable schedule for most people. My wife and I are early risers though and found ourselves up long before breakfast, so it ended up feeing like we had to wait around before starting our day (there is a coffee & tea station setup that you can go to at any time of day). Again, this will work for some people but not others. - The wifi is spotty. It's good enough to look up directions on Google maps but you can't stream a show or movie if that's your kind of thing to do on vacation. - There were a few extra charges that we didn't expect. For example, dinner Saturday night was $45 per person and Ed offered us wine with dinner (he is a sommelier and has a great selection). We were surprised to see that the wine was $15 per glass when we got our final bill at checkout. We could have asked of course, but we didn't think of it and Ed didn't mention it.

The beds are a bit firm and the pillows a bit flat. The front desk employee, Devin, had to be one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was happy and smiling and said if I needed anything or if there is a problem with anything to to just let him know. He actually seems to be one of the rare people who actually understands customer service and enjoys what he does.

The cabin is small but not cramped and all the basics included. hot plate, mini fridge, stand-up shower. The heat system is badass for cold nights. The wifi worked no problem but we didnt use it much. There was a tv on a wall mount but we never even turned it on. The bed was the best part, after a long trip I just hit it and was done.

They do a lunch service and the ride is full of commentary describing the surrounding areas. Before the train departed, we were able to walk down to the Natural Museum (Darden Mill) and were given some suggestions on local swimming holes and hiking trails. We also stopped by the West Virginia Railway Museum and caught up on the history of Elkins (as well as some spooky folklore). 10/10 would suggest spending a day doing train related activities. The train runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Tons of hiking trails, trout fishing, gun and archery range, and home of the Bowers CCC Camp. The staff at Kumbrabow was helpful and attentive from the time I called to get information to while I was there. Kumbrabow has tent/RV camping (no hook ups), and cabins - all along picturesque Mill Creek. The WV Forest Service has positioned split firewood at the entrance of the camping area for sale. There are three pit toilets, but no water at the camping area. There is a bath house, with hot water and laundry, two and a half miles from the camping area. The bath house is in the same area as the Ranger Station. Payment for camping sites, first come first serve, are self pay ($17.00/night) next to the wood shed. Make no mistake, Kumbrabow is remote, but worth the trip.
