I had the mixed grill, which was cooked perfectly, and my wife had the Gammon which she thoroughly enjoyed. The chips that came with both are cooked just like regular chip shop chips, which is a major plus from us. The price is comparable with similar restaurants and I felt the portions were good value for the money.

I think duck really deserves something a bit sweeter, but if anything it was my fault because I chose it. La contessa and la dowager contessa were delighted with their choices. Reasonable prices, excellent food, great ambiance and also friendly staff who definitely seemed just that bit more professional than average. The fruit and vegetables are always beautiful and fresh, the meats are produced there on site and are delicious and nicely priced. The speciality sausages are lovely and there is stacks of other produce too, all local. Things like bread, cheese, eggs, icecream, cakes, preserves and much more. Not only is it a farm shop but also the best carvery in the area. The carvery is also a cafe and they do breakfasts and light lunches as well as hot food on non-carvery days. Get there early though (half eleven) if planning a carvery as the queues are huge!

How many ways can I say YUM?…read more I first experienced the wonder that is the Plantaganet one Christmas, when the the pivotal three couples in our group of 'kids' munched a glorious meal here. It was amazing. Salmon that melted in the mouth, steaks as soft as butter... Incredible. As a result we've been back countless times since and booked the entire place out for last New Year's Day, something which shall doubtless be happening this year too. If you can catch it in winter, do have some of the delicious mulled wine they serve at the bar. The bar itself is gorgeously decked out in wooden furnishings with lush little wicker cushioned seats and quirky features. The staff are super attentive and the proprietor is something of a character. But the real stars are the dishes themselves. This place does fantastic mussels (fish and shellfish are a bit of a speciality here), the meat is cooked to perfection and the sides they provide you with are insanely tasty. Oh and you must have the bread to pick at for the start of your meal, baked fresh and full of olives and sundried tomatoes. It's a rabbit warren of a place with winding stairs, and it's family friendly and harbours tons of charm and character. I can never wait to come back here whenever I leave Wales. Do try it!

When it first opened there were lots of difficulties with unbelievably slow and inadequate service, but that has slowly improved recently to the point where it is now fairly slick. The food is refreshingly different and the specials board is changed frequently so if you are a regular visit you are guaranteed a change from your previous visit. I love the atmosphere, it is cosmopolitan and yet not pretentious, quite relaxing in fact. I have not had a poor meal here and would recommend it unless there is a hen party happening which is not ideal as we discovered on our last visit!! So do ask when booking because it did spoil our quite romantic meal as you can imagine. All in all a very positive experience generally.
