Nothing beats coming home to the North East than a load of freshly caught fish from the North Sea. Actually, let me rephrase that...Latimers used to be a small family run fish business where you could only buy what was caught the night before but now it has expanded and you can buy a whole array of fish. Fishing just off the coast still takes place though - so don't be disheartened. You can ask which fish has been caught locally. Apart from the really friendly staff, who are extremely knowledgeable about all of their fish (including how to cook it, what would taste nice with it etc) the shop and cafe is laid out in a welcoming way. You can either buy your fish from the counter to take away or sit in and try one of their delicious platters....Look at my photo of the crab platter (which was 14 pound!!!). It was incredible. This place is an absolute must for all fish lovers.

It has a Cafe, but this is closed at the moment, what a shame! My Mother spent a small fortune and we all agreed that everything was lovely and fresh as well as tasty and impressive. We were robbed though, the prices were well over the top and the place was somewhat pretentious. A couple of mentions on TV and in the Press have clearly gone to ones head! worth a visit if you are feeling rich we felt(

My personal favourite place to buy meat, veggies and bread…read more Big barn type market in the centre of Newcastle. Numerous stalls that offer all types of different services. Numerous award winning butchers that offer prime cuts of meat, fantastic mince and healthy plump chickens and eggs! Wonderful bakery that makes the best breads and pastry I have tried. Wonderful vegetables and fruit stands where you get can a serious deal on great vegetables. Cheapest and most authentic pick and mix selection I have ever seen Fish monger, show repair, tea shop, cafes, clothing and boot sale, cd shops, home repair, clothing alterations ... Even a room with a scale in it! Grainger Market is magical. A must see, I consider the market a tourist attraction because of how traditional it is. The people in the booths all seem very authentic and very helpful.

I was used to markets being places with cheap tat and someone with a thick Black Country accent yelling from a van about sausages, and it's just definitely not like that here. There are still veggies, butchers (and decent cheeses to boot), but there are some seriously talented craftspeople too. It's good for a look around even if you don't feel like buying anyth8ng, odds are you probably will end up doing so.

This is now becoming a de facto American style, and I'm not happy with this general mood. However, I didn't pay the bill, so it was left up to them. Total, with the service charge, £121.00. I tried to have the Mussel Platter, but they are already prepared and I didn't want the cheese... So had off the specials' board: King prawns in garlic butter. We asked for some bread to soak up the juices, and they provided. Also asked if wanted the black pepper, and this came at the same time as the request.... Good. Again, I ate off the board, and had the Halibut. Cooked to perfection, and, as recall, a reasonable price for the huge chunk on the plate. Asked if we wanted the black pepper, but this we had to wait, for her to complete an amusing chat with the chef en route.... Had a pint of: Lindeboom 5.0% £4.20 Food great, staff able to laugh..... Would I go again/ Yes. Would I take off points for the minor niggles, not really.

The big mussel came well recommended so when visiting for a friends birthday and she strangely decided that seafood would be the ideal pre-lash dinner, we happily obliged ! It has an interesting decor, the tables and chairs aren't really up to much, and the place setting could only be described as school lunch esque (paper place mats, bent cutlery). In fact, if you didn't look up you could easily convince yourself you were in your local primary school lunch hall. However, if you are able to look above waist height, you realise that it actually has a fairly interesting decor albeit a little dark, with an open kitchen and mezzanine floor above. They offer a Cheaper lunch menu and also have a great range of seafood on the main menu interspersed with offers, all for a very reasonable price. We opted for starters, I had scallops which were cooked very well. They came with a sweet potato purée which complimented nicely. A friend had fresh homemade calamari which had a crispy coating and the squid was not chewy or overcooked. We also decided to have some oysters. I don't know why. Oysters are terrible! They really are an acquired taste and it depends on whether you cook them plain or with some kind of topping, or if you steam or even grill them. The ones at big mussel pretty much come as they are from the ocean, with a slice of lemon on the side. I was definitely not a fan, but they were a popular dish that evening as many people around us were enjoying them, so I can only assume they were cooked well! I had a seafood linguine for my main, which, although the seafood was varied and fresh, didn't actually have much flavour. The seafood and pasta were cooked well, but I was expecting a stronger tomato base which unfortunately was not delivered. It was very watery and flavourless which didn't appeal at all! One of our party absolutely hates seafood and they didn't have the most extensive menu to cater for her.. she ended up with a roast chicken dinner that made me reminisce of the school dining hall again... Overall it was a good evening and we had a good laugh but I probably wouldn't go back. If you are really into your shellfish, they have a great selection and have good deals on buckets of steamed mussels which might be worth the trip, but if you don't like seafood, don't go to a seafood restaurant. They are usually stocked with trending products such as the Brown Sugar Bubble Tea ice cream bars or the world renowned HaiDiLao hotpot soup based. Other products range from Korean foods to Vietnamese noodles, and a multitude of sauces/seasonings. The one thing they don't have that I can't complain about is the live seafood section such as live lobsters, fish or clams in running water tanks. I grew up a little spoiled by the 99 Ranch Markets in LA. Come find everything you need to stock an Asian pantry here!

This supermarket is great for the newbie as the staff are actually quite friendly (unlike most typical Chinese supermarkets) and will get an English speaking colleague for you if you are not well versed in Cantonese. HiYou stock a wide range of fresh, frozen and dry goods imported from China, Singapore, Japan, Korean etc... You will definitely find things here you can't find in your regular supermarket so great for the natives and adventurous newbie types or you cool hipster kids finally realising how great Asian snacks are. As you enter, to the right, you are met with a choice: a basket or a trolley? Go for the trolley so you don;t have to carry the basket as the trolley is made from you placing a basket in it anyway. The fresh selection is small but you can find some Asian vegetables and fruits that are cheaper (sometimes), larger and in better stock than your regular supermarket. Beyond that is the bakery counters where you can see the baking assistants, busily making more baked goodies. The bakery goods are, passable. Not the greatest tasting but definitely fresh. They can take Chinese cake orders too. The fridge section is quite limited too (I guess shipping all the way from South East Asia, you don't have much choice...) but you can find yourself some fresh kimchi (YAS), fresh fish balls (the best kind), a range of fresh tofu (hard to find in regular supermarkets), fresh noodles (also, the best type) and things such as lap chung (Chinese sausage). The freezer bit is a bit bigger with lots of frozen goodies such as dumpling (BEST THINGS EVER), frozen sweet rolls and desserts, ready to cook goodies such as fish balls, spring rolls etc..., hot pot ingredients, frozen vegetables such as edamame, frozen spring roll pastry, frozen seafood and meat. At the back of the store is a typical mish-mash that you can find at any Chinese market stall from cheap pens, Chinese style crockery and other household items. The whole middle of the store is dedicated to aisles of noodles, sauces and snacks. For the more sophisticated palettes, fear not, you will find all your sushi making needs here (minus the sashimi). On the far left is all the rice and big, full box of packets of noodles (for those of you who want to buy noodles in the bulk). A note for those of who are hooked on Pot Noodles. Please, first of all, what is wrong with you. Second of all, get yourself down and check out the Asian range of noodles: real noodles. Trust me, you will never go back. I highly recommend Korean Shin ramyum aka the best instant noodles ever for the all occasion, spice loving, hungry poor person friendly noodle. Finally, back around to the front of the store are the small tills where you place the basket on them. The cashier will scan and pack for you so all you need to do is put the trolley away and wait to pay whilst not being tempted with all the candy imported from America and Japan (Herseys and Hi-Chews anyone?).

The Fritto Misto starter was a mean portion of lukewarm, cheap fish like calamari and mussels and skinny slices of limp cold vegetables like red pepper - really unappealing. The main of cod and chips was just alright - the cod was neither thick nor generous, but it was fresh and the batter pleasant - and no discernible grease. With all the hype I'd heard of this place it was really disappointing. The portion of chips was mean and as the plates were lukewarm the food didn't stay hot long either. Plates for fish & chips need to be really very hot and there's no excuse for them not to be. The crumble dessert was ok. Not bad but not delicious. The crumble topping and ice cream were darn good. The mushy peas were darn good and the scraps (fried bits of batter) were exquisite - fried unhealthy and almost the best part of an otherwise truly forgettable meal. The staff were friendly and inefficient maybe because of the kitchen but I found no evidence of the great reputation I'd heard about the place. Would I go back - it's two star for the price paid, poor coffee, mean portions, cool plates and slow service - certainly not but it has aspects of good 3 star, just not enough.

This fish and chip shop is one of my very favourites and it is so delicious it is making me hungry…read moreright now! They do lots of different meals such as fish and chips, fish chips and mushy peas, saugage and chips, chicken and chips. and many many more. There is often a queue especially in the early evenings but you never have to wait very long to get served and then it also doesn't take long to get your order and then tuck in to a piping hot dinner. I have never had any complaints about this place it is great if you want a treat.
