Ironically, the restaurant that we chose, El Guacamole, was a five minute walk from our hotel. We placed orders for the following: Frozen Margarita (wife), Frozen Passion Fruit Margarita (myself), Nachos Con Queso, Choriqueso Quesadilla (wife), and Deshebrada de Res Burrito (myself). The delicious drinks arrived five minutes later and the food arrived in less than 15 minutes. The Nachos Con Queso was a delicious starter that we shared and set the expectations for what I thought would be a good overall meal. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Respectfully, the food lacked flavor. My burrito probably would have been good if served with sauce, same with my wife's quesadilla. We both used the remaining sauce from the Nachos Con Queso to add the desired flavor. Knowing that we had to doctor up our own food, I cannot give a positive review in good faith. We reside in California where the bar is set pretty high for good, authentic Mexican food. Therefore, maybe I should have lowered my expectations for Mexican food in Paris. In France, nobody will speak English to you (or they will and then curse behind their back), so we had been getting along fine with our "fairly conversational" French. Well, this girl picked up our probably lousy accent and jumped right into English, explaining that she had been dying to practice it. She had come to Paris to work and go to school, and she made the experience even nicer. In Paris they don't just throw a frozen patty on the grill. Nope, this was freshly-ground sirloin or mignon, hand-formed and cooked to absolute perfection. The cheese was typical French: fresh and full of flavor and bite. No American cheese here- thank heavens. Big ol honkin' buns, with lettuce, pickles and tomatoes on the side. A quick word about the produce in France: Forget what you've tasted. The produce in other countries tastes amazing. You know how tomatoes don't have much flavor? Well, they do everywhere else! So THAT'S what tomatoes are supposed to taste like! (the bulb went on). That added to the wonderful flavors mingling in our mouths like star-crossed lovers in an orgy of taste bud nirvana. They topped this whole conflaguration with this velveeta-like stuff they termed "cheese fondue." Ok. But it worked! Great burger. Different than here, but just amazing. One final word about the pommes-frites (french fries). French fries in France are to die for. I don't know how or why, but they are. You're just going to have to believe me on that one. I could eat these all day long. They're light, delicate, rich, potatoe-y, salty, thick, crunchy, soft, oily, flavorful, yummy creations from heaven. This place hit it on all counts. The salsa, however was not spicy by any TexMex standard. I would not have paid extra for that, especially since there was a bottle of free Tabasco sitting on my table. My second biggest gripe was that the burrito was not folded so that it could be picked up and eaten by hand. I was obligated to cut it with my fork and knife and I found that somewhat burrito blasphemy. Taste-wise it was OK. I got the veggie option and it was a bit lacking in flavor. The tortilla hadn't been warmed and was a bit tough as well. My friend got the tortilla soup which came with chips, cheese and sour cream for 6€. It looked tasty and was a hearty portion. So you'll definitely need to be with people who can walk up and down stairs while holding plates- and maybe more than one plate if someone needs to hold a spot at tables.
