Wow, what a gem - I can't believe I've been missing out all these years. Friends remembered Le Beaujolais a private dining club from yonks back but the ground floor restaurant is open to all. There was a time when London was full of unassuming yet quirky restaurants offering Italian or French home cooking. Most have since been replaced by fusion street food pop up chains, so good to see that some have survived and it's never too late to discover Le Beaujolais! I'm no connoisseur and always struggle a bit with French wines, they have a good choice of wines by the glass and you'll hit on something you like eventually. The food menu is stuffed with comfort foods for any appetite - they really do offer a single boiled egg!! While one friend decided on a tapas style selection of meats and cheeses, another opted for the creamy fish pie (very creamy!) and I couldn't resist the beouf bourgiugnon. I was very happy to exchange the suggested rice side with mashed potato - yum! More meat than I normally eat in a week, went home fat and happy. Lovely staff, too and the whole room is decorated with posters, ties and crockery hang from the ceiling - and I even spotted a bicycle stored in the rafters. Loved it and can't wait to find an excuse to return. read more

What a little gem! Doesn't look like much from the front but inside its like you've been transported to France. Not massive but will seat around 30 and has a lovely bar area to perch. Very good selection of wine (French of course) and although quite expensive it was very tasty. Plumped for the house red carafe and was very pleasantly surprised. A quaffable wine that didn't need food however did succumb to the cheese board. Comes with bread, biscuits and a choice of 4 or 8 cheeses. Atmosphere very jolly and felt very appropriate for a Thursday. Got the locals who check in and out on the locals board but also catered for business types and passerbys. No tourist that I could see in there and staff were perfect. French family I think that own and run the place so very authentic. read more

This is a very quirky little place but highly enjoyable. It is a great location very close to Leicester Square tube. The bar itself is not big but has loads of atmosphere. The owner also goes out of his way to get everyone seats and settled. Which did result in us moving seats several times but that was quite fun as everyone was then chatting - very not london! They do food but we just went for drinks - a couple of bottles of prosecco which was good. I really liked this place - not sure if I would want to spend an entire evening there but it is great for pre dinner drinks read more

What an awesome little wine bar! Kudos to my friend Erica U who discovered this most excellent of places. Le Beaujolais serves up generous glasses of fine wine for a very reasonable price, and has a unique style about the whole thing. I've been in many a wine bar (probably more than my liver would like) but this is the first one that has enough ties hanging from the ceiling to stock a men's boutique and there is even a bicycle hidden in the rafters. It's what you'd expect if you emptied out your parents' attic and garage and then decorated your flat. It's odd, not doubt about that, but strangely endearing at the same time. The two main waiters/hosts/sommeliers are massive flirts in the way that only old Europeans can be, staying just on the right side to be charming rather than dodgy. They remember their regulars and are not too worried about personal space. They do have excellent taste in wine so don't feel afraid to ask for a suggestion or two. All in all, this place is perfect for a catch up with friends although perhaps a little too cosy for a first date. It's fun, relaxing, and you could easily spend an evening here sipping wine. The quiche is supposed to be fantastic so I'm looking forward to a return visit rather than pre-dinner drinks! But if you do fancy a larger meal, Hawksmoor is just around the corner... read more

If you like, tiny spaces, amazing wine, cheese that will blow your socks off and grumpy french men this is the place for you!! Actually whilst it does have all of the above it also has the MOST amazing atmosphere, even though there is a fight for available space inside there is so much to see and the intimate surroundings makes it absolutely fab for a date. If you have some time to kill whilst musing over a plate of french cheese with a glass of red in your hand, then this is the place for you. It is also a great welcome treat after a hard day shopping. Apparently i am 'so french' that my friend feels the need to take me to french places when going out. Well it's rather a good call for i really enjoyed the festive french atmosphere of Le Beaujolais. The bar isn't too big so you'll have to push through when you want to go anywhere but it is more convivial than annoying. The menu offers several possibilities from bottles to glass. You'll find less choice in the glass section but it's good if you only want one drink or if you want to taste different wines (if you do, start with dry whites, then liquorish/sweet whites, then reds Bordeaux being the strongest so the last ones to try). I recall they also make cheese and 'charcuterie' platters. I recommend you try it for it's one of the greatest french inventions ;). I love the way the place is decorated. They hung ties to the ceiling and the walls are covered in french references. It's funny and make a darkish cosy atmosphere. read more

Pretty much as French as French can be. Aa real rustic charm, with plenty of cracking wines to choose from. Non of your New World stuff either, just cracking French wines at reasonable prices. We sampled a few bottles of the Beaujolais at £19.10 a pop and tobe honest, the rain on the way home didn't bother me.....Great place to meet up with mates after work, but get there early.it is a tiny little place. read more

It's always worth reminding oneself that romance is alive and kicking in this sometimes-cynical town, and thinking of Le Beaujolais definitely gives me the warm and fuzzies. My lovely boyfriend whisked me here for a drink before taking me to see Spamalot last year and I'm not sure if I was more surprised that a place like this exist in London or that my boyfriend knew about it! Neither of us know a thing about wine so the owner asked us to describe the sort of thing we'd like to taste. A few key descriptive words later and we were brandishing a delicious French red in our hands and smiling widely - it was a fine start to a lovely evening and a pleasant shock to find such a lovely, authentically French place slap bang in the middle of tourist town. read more

Quite simply my new favourite restaurant in London. It may be a little misleading to use the term restaurant when there's only a few items on the menu, but if the French made restaurants, they'd probably be wine bars, and so they'd be the best restaurants in the world. Yes, this is a wine bar, with a few delicious choices on a piece of card to justify 'going out for dinner'. As atmospheric and romantic as a date with a French girl at an Arts cinema, stylishly dingy, down to earth French cooking and surprisingly good service from the nationality dishing out degrees in aloofness. I felt completely at home here once I'd snatched a place to sit and had ordered a half bottle of Chablis. The best bit is this is a cock's stride away from the Leicester square main drag and yet manages to filter out all of the tourist folk. Maybe they peer into the cavern and can't quite make out what's going on? If only they knew there were lots of people drinking delicious Beaujolais, speaking too loud and all with too little light. Vraiment, c'est très, très authentique. As for romance and dating - this place is like sex panther, so handle it with care. read more

I wish I liked this place more than I do. I had a fabulous fabulous time. There was giggling, there was gossip and it was just on the right side of 'warm enough' to sit outside. Unfortunately, outside isn't that charming, the wine wasn't that great and it was bloody expensive. If I'm paying £11 for two small glasses of wine, I want it to be bloody brilliant. It wasn't. Coupled with the cramped little bathroom and it was all a bit... meh. The place is quite charming, I enjoyed ordering in French (I do that when I'm pissed, I think it's fun, it's really not, please stop me from doing it next time you see me). But with Cork & Bottle down the road, and my recent discovery of Terroirs, I can't see me needing to come back here really. I imagine it's better in winter. I'll maybe try again but it wn't be my idea. read more

Nice little (emphasis on the 'little', I'm afraid) wine bar run by real French people in the heart of London. I like this place not only because I love wine, but because once you're in there you don't feel like you're somewhere quiet and secluded, not slap bang in the middle of Charing Cross Road, which is no bad thing. Great cheese plate with plenty of tasty bread and the staff are friendly. However it IS tiny, so you could have a bad night if you didn't nab a table early and cheap it is not. Hands up who remembers The Dive Bar? Hands up who, er, is old enough to remember The Dive Bar? And now hands up who's old enough to remember what The Cork & Bottle used to be like? I'm still a fan of the C&B - raised ham and cheese pie, need I say more? - but find their pricing a little painful in these tougher times. There's also hardly a week that goes by where I don't miss The Dive Bar. Great music, oddly sticky floor, a pub with foibles - if you wanted Guinness you had to buy it in the bar upstairs and bring it down yourself - and the happiest, friendliest atmosphere in London. Sigh. London needs places like that. Happily in Le Beaujolais, it's got one. The place doesn't appear to have been decorated since the early 70s, the furniture is a mish-mash of cheap functional wooden items, the wine list and menu are as basic as they come. But if there's a better atmosphere to be had in this part of town, I'd like to know where. The music veers between decent jazz, blues and classic rock. The regulars are proper regulars. The cheese is well kept. You can strike up a conversation with the neighbouring tables. The French owner is exceptionally cool. You can buy boiled eggs on the bar. This, my friends, may be a little bit of France on the edge of Covent Garden but it's a proper, PROPER London experience. read more

Up until Feb I worked right next door to this real bit of France in the middle of London. Some of their house wine can be a bit "rustic" - so what, the atmosphere is great and real and if you do not like the glass you get good banter with the barmen about what to go for instead: I have had some lovely plonk here. The food is pretty good - and keep a look out for the proprietor who is a dead cert for Gerard Depadieux (sp?). Yes, Cork and Bottle is spitting distance away, and yes Gordons is 6 mins walk, but neither has the gallic flavour that this gem offers. read more

La Beaujolais is my favourite wine bar, where the cheese is to die for, the wine exquisite, the music is blues and jazz, and the vibe is indisputedly French. The place is tiny, and fills up quick, but if you can get a seat at the bar you'll usually end up talking to some fascinating individuals or even the two French barmen themselves. Sometimes when I'm there I think that perhaps the whole bar was made just for me, because I love everything about it. I feel a little bit evil reviewing le Beaujolais, because every other person who loves this place will be trying to keep it a secret. Sorry! read more

My aunt brought me to this bar a few years ago for the first time. She told me that she used to frequent it in her early days of working for production film companies - apparently there's a members restaurant in the basement. I was enthralled. The sheer size of it, the memorabilia (ties hanging from the ceiling donated by jolly businessmen), wine labels pasted to lampshades, wide selection of wine. This bar is simple not a tourist bar - it's a place to escape them - perfect! I keep coming back and introducing new friends - who all love it. read more

So, this is probably my favourite watering hole in London, for the simple fact that it's like being in a back street of a rural French town. As the name suggests, the order of the day is Beaujolais, and excellent Beaujolais at that. The House wine (£15.10 a bottle) is absolutely divine and so drinkable that you can get through about five bottles before you know about it. It is an intimate place, with a long wooden bar with rickety stools, and a few old tables scattered about offering some scant seating, but it's just got the best atmosphere. The cheeses are amazing, and the beef stew a treat, and if you just want to sit the night out with a bottle of good red and some good friends, there's no other place. read more

Excellent wine, good atmosphere and some truly delicious bar snacks. I recommend the hard-boiled eggs - they come with pepper and Encona sauce ready for dipping. Rumour has it that every few dozen they throw in a raw one, so the game is to crack the egg on your head. Friendly staff and an excellent location in what can be a bit of a dead zone for natives. my favorite place to eat in london pretty much. the food is cheap and the menu hasn't changed as far as i know. the staff and customers are unbelievably friendly, the music is jazz/blues. the interior is old style and has bottles hanging from the ceiling. it has a lot of character both form the place the staff and the alcohol. the wine is from very affordable to very expensive. its a great place for a drink or a bite. as expected a great cheese selection. order the beef and you wont be disappointed. read more

This place is amazing, and so central and yet its criminally easy to miss. I must have walked within metres of it hundreds of times before I properly noticed it the first time. Beaujolais is a lovely little treat- a French wine bar in the most overpriced, touristy part of town that actually feels authentic. It feels really natural, though wandering in off the street is a massive adjustment from the hustle and bustle to this tiny, warm room with walls absolutely plastered with Gallic paraphernalia ( a real collection- not flown in) and lovely music. Behind the bar is a massive selection of gentlemen's ties which the barman told me on my first visit began when their tipsier customers would in a merry state take them off and leave them behind, and they have collected them ever since. The romance of that story alone got to me, but in truth its just a great atmosphere with a nice selection of wines (granted, I'm no expert though) that are affordable. I reccommend it wholeheartedly and hope its stays like this for ever! read more

Love this place for a pit stop anytime of day of night. It's a very French bar - nothing fancy. But the wine is very good and the shepherds pie is truly amazing. Oodles of charm and coziness. A bit of a respite from the overly pristine sterility of so much of central London. Unfortunately, they're selling you rather mediocre French wine at steep prices. One can get far more interesting wines at some of the newer places that may be less charming but are more au courant. So,this cute spot ultimately leaves one feeling cheated, fairly typical for central London. read more
