We came here at the suggested early time, but we still had a bit of a wait. However, the ambiance is excellent (dark, moody, appropriate given you're basically waiting beside a cave!), and the bar staff were wonderful with suggestions for a glass while we waited. We were quoted a half hour wait time and had half that. We ended up, very luckily, being seated in the cave! This was a blessing and a feat, given that there are tons of tables outside that people normally get seated there. It was a totally incredible experience, and we loved every second. The wine is great, and there are a million selections. Don't get me wrong, she's a true star! However, the cheese was why we were there. We ordered a ton of food for two people, and I don't think we'd have done it any other way. The cheese boards are filling enough to just eat those, but we both got a salad starter (burrata and roast beef). We went for several cheeses, and the jams and jellies that accompany the cheeses were excellent and helped bite the flavor of one (so sorry to the Lord London, I didn't love you until I had some jam on you). I can't compare Gordon's to any other place I've been to. This place is truly unique and I'm so glad it was recommended to us by a family member. It's located in an old wine cellar (the oldest in London) and dimly lit by candles. If you are looking for a spot that matches the dark and moody London aesthetic and offers plenty of history, this place is perfect for you. I was very surprised by the quick wait time. We travelled in August which is their busiest time of year and the most we had to wait for a table was maybe 10 minutes. This place seems to be a true hidden gem and more popular among locals than tourists. The cheese boards are delicious and just as unique as the place itself. They have plenty of flavors to choose from and have several different options depending on your budget. We went with the two cheese board and everything included paired perfectly with the wine. The staff was great at giving us recommendations and even let us sample several flavors before committing. We loved this place so much we decided to come back our last day for round two. But if I would have to do it all over again, I would just skip the line and say I'd rather be inside standing, so I could see the cave in the grotto instead of being outside with the heat lamps. This is near Embankment Station and inside Victoria Embankment Park. About 5pm, the line begins to form, so if you don't want to wait, get there earlier in the afternoon. The wine and cheese selection was amazing, and I loved sitting outside. They had heaters, so the temperature was perfect. Everything about this restaurant was fine. We went on a Friday the weight was about an hour. Seems weird for a wine bar outside seating. Looks like there are not a lot of grown-ups for the late night crowd. So we grownups came the next day early and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cannot believe how unbelievably popular this is. They have a nice wine selection but I wish there was a slight improvement on their shareable bite selection. The Scottish egg is served cold which I don't think does it justice. Also the baguette served on the cheese board should have been warm in my opinion. The servers were nice but definitely busy. My suggestion for the establishment is to leave a history card at each table so guests can read what the place was throughout history while they're enjoying their wine. Such an amazing staple to visit in London! A great experience being at London's oldest wine bar in an underground cave. There was a long line but we were able to skip the line to find seating inside by ordering at the bar and just finding open seating in the bar area. They put tent on each side of the pavement and all tents have a heater. The inside is interesting too you would feel like you're in a war shelter. Wine selection is great and price is reasonable. My favorite is the food tho. They have all sort of cheese board and my fav is the brunch board with roasted beef and smoked salmon. My fav part is that they give you a big slice of Brie and it is so delicious with the cranberry sauce. Since it was around 5 pm, the place was packed already. We wanted to sit indoor but the only table that was available was the community table. So we sat with three other American tourists who were very nice folks. We ordered nice dry white wine and Italian cheeseboard. Four Yankee tourists tired and hungry after a full morning walking about and exploring London were caught unprepared in a horrendous rain downpour. They happened on this gem soaked but happy to be out of the rain. There's outdoor seating for when that's appropriate but we found an open table in the salt cave! So we grabbed one of the many outside tables available (this was also in January, so the heaters were on at each table) and you have to have a table number to give the bar to be able to order. I went inside to the extensive wine list and the bartender was able to help me navigate through the long list (as I am not a huge wine drinker, but I do enjoy it). Opted for a lovely, semi sweet white. The inside is definitely Instagram worthy and I was so sad it was packed the whole time. It looks like a mix between a cave and a wine cellar. It's also down a little side street (a few stairs to get to the actual street). The menu isn't huge, but enough to have a lot type appetizer or night cap to fulfill that urge. Every time we are in London, Gordon's wine bar is a MUST!!! We always sit down in what my husband and I call "the wine cave"!! The charcuteries is plentiful and we love that you can get half bottles of wine. We always end up getting a platter with cheese, meat, cornichons & baguette, along with atleast 2 half bottles of wine (a red and a white). First of all, I get the historical value (which I loved) of going to Gordon's; it was why we stopped-in after all. However, the place is just another wine bar, and would probably only rate 2 stars for me if I was there to only to drink (and not for the touristy value). It is a no waitstaff, good-luck finding a seat, wine-only kinda place. And, if not everyone in the party is a wine enthusiast, this is not the place for you, because that is all they served. It is tiny inside (at least it is downstairs in the cave) and you have to wait in LINE to order WINE. I love wine, but waiting in line to get a glass (or bottle in our case) doesn't make much sense when you can get wine at any bar or restaurant. Oh well, I have been, seen, and had my wine. If you like history, or want to check it off your list of must-see's in London, it's worth checking it out. Otherwise, if you just want to have a glass of wine (or other bar drinks), there are lots of places nearby you might enjoy as much or better, and probably get better service. read more

We were humiliated by the staff, we got into a fight with the big man G Ramsay. We were sick, our self esteem was low our homes were squishy we had a horrible time. the drinks were okay although the bartender offered me peanuts and I said yeah but I'm allergic to peanuts and what the bartender should have done was say " NO your are allergic, how dare you say yes. I love Gordon's! They claim they are the oldest wine bar in London which is very cool! What I like most about Gordon's is the cave like atmosphere. It feels like you are literally sitting in a cave! Very dark, lit with candle light. The seats are first come first serve which worked out nicely for us. I had a sweeter port wine and my fiancé had the honey wine, both were very strong so we ordered Gouda cheese with bread and jam. It was nice to have with our wines and they give you a big portion. Not much has changed today since Gordon's Wine Bar originally opened in 1864. The current owners, Wendy Gordon and her son, Simon; (no relation to Angus Gordon) have maintained the original decor, kept the music out and only sell wine, while providing traditional and well priced food. My husband ordered a bottle of wine at the bar while my sister helped me order several aged cheeses. We purchased some hearty bread, aged cheddar, Camembert, and prosciutto. We also purchased a Scotch Egg. The Scotch Egg price included access to the salad bar. The salad bar included several different salads as well as marinated vegetables, pickles, quinoa, and other delectable treats. After we paid for our purchases we made our way into a cavernous room with wobbly tables and candle light. The atmosphere was so romantic and mysterious! Just watch your head as you walk around.
