Their Caesar Salad with salmon was a dissappointment primarily in terms of preparation. The romaine lettuce was chopped into small pieces and had perhaps a few drops of dressing. The few croutons present should have called for reenforcements. On top was thinly sliced salmon with some agonizingly tough parts that better knife work might have readily dispatched. I'll spare you the details of the equally dissappointing menu choices of the other diners at the table. Overall, the atmosphere is nice, the service staff is attentive, the ingredients are of good quality. If the management can just inspire the cooks this could come together. Right now it's a pass.

Bad tourist. But hey, I'm making it up in full force this time. I've been exploring pretty much every nook and cranny within the Paris limits to find the best bistrot's, restaurants, boulangeries, patisseries around (you get the idea). Bistrot Papillon outside the metro stop Poissonniere is a real special find. Out of the way of most people who just wander along the Seine, Bistrot Papillon is a hidden gem that will be a place that I will revisit time and time again with each time I come to Paris. Highlighting the best of French food in a modernesque style, this place really mixes the art culture and the food that you find in the city. They have a short menu but it doesn't seem as such as your eyes bounce from one dish to the next. You have the option of ordering each dish by itself or you can do a combo of appetizer/main, main/dessert or appetizer/main/dessert. Of course, we went with the latter. Since we were 2 people, we could try twice the number of dishes together. Starting off with the Oeuf Mollet, a soft boiled egg nestled a bed of braised leeks to create a nest like artistic piece. From the way it looks to the taste, it was one of the most mind boggling, crazy things that I have tasted all in such a fantastic way, that I could really have 3-4 of those. We also went for the Presse de canette which has foie combined with meat into a gelatin type dish. I totally butchered that description but it doesn't change that it was a wonderful dish that I was truly astounded by. Our main courses were a chicken breast cooked to perfection that was perfectly moist on the inside as well as a onglet de vache that was omg so juicy and sweet. You really should get it medium rare. Any more cooked and you'll lose the flavors of the dish. And to end the meal we were originally going to go with the St Nectaire which turned out to be cheese. Looking for something sweet, I chose the Espirit du Mont Blanc and the Cremeux Chocolat. The Espirit du Mont Blanc is a blast of taste and textures that really give you a neat sweet experience. It's more the fun of eating it than specifically wowing you with the flavors. The Cremeux Chocolat was the perfect balance to that that it was mostly a single texture but a burst of flavor. Starting at the top is a chocolate moose on a bed of foamed Earl Gray infused foam on top of a chocolate ice cream. Amazing. We shared a carafe of red wine (50 cl) which was the perfect cherry on top of it all. The decor of the restaurant was amazing. If you arrive right when they open, no reservation is necessary. French casual is the dress (no shorts and tasteful dress). First you get the tourists early in the evening but you start to see the French come in closer to 7:30 and 8. The entrees and mains look like dessert, and the desserts look like a main dish. We walked up right at 7 pm when they opened and were lucky enough to be seated at one of three tables that weren't reserved for the evening. Lacking a full grasp of the French language was not a problem, our waiter's English with Aussie accent was great. He answered any menu questions and offered a couple of recommendations. I went with a single glass of wine, Debbie tried the flight. He customized it some by her food order and that she preferred all reds. Then the food entertainment begins.......watching various plates go by, seeing fancy desserts, but knowing they weren't really sweets. The cappuccino was a cream of mushroom soup. Gaufre, similar to a waffle, was toast and foie gras. Main dishes looked like profiteroles and churros was a little like a seared steak tartare and French fries. Truly appeared as a plate of sweets. The Paris Brest is supposed to be a French dessert, made of choux pastry. Mine was duck with a confit pear. We decided to share a dessert. What looked like Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, their Steak Purée, was a rich chocolaty brownie with creme de banana and caramel sauce. It was fun and unique. The restaurant is cute. Would make a fun date night if in the states.

They get confused for a moment as they try to process precisely what that means, but then once they realize, they're amazed! This was my reaction too upon discovering Prive de Dessert, and I continue to talk about it one week later because the food lived up to the hype. Now I'll admit, some dishes were executed more successfully than others. For example, my significant other got the tiramisu, and it was incredibly on point. If you didn't know it was lamb tartar, you'd be in for a rude awakening when digging in. My appetizer - the pain perdu - was also a dead ringer for sweet French toast, but turned out to be an incredibly tasty savory dish. For the main course, I had the rice pudding (actually risotto). This was some of the creamiest, richest risotto I've ever let past my lips. I could not physically finish the dish, and this is one of the few times in my life that I genuinely felt bad for leaving what was left on my plate. My SO had the Baba au Rhum (more lamb), which least effectively fulfilled the gimmick (i.e. it looked like a ring of meat, not dessert). But still tasty! And for dessert, the pesto pasta. This was honestly too sharply citrus-flavored for me (and a tad too sweet), so I only had a few bites. But the SO loved it! The meringue as "cheese" was a nice touch. This is a fun stop if you're in Paris. Solid food, cool concept, and overall a unique French restaurant.
