Cool Asian market in the heart of Verdun, on rue Wellington…read more They had a nice produce section as well as a large dry goods area. Many of the produce could be bought as single items (like slices of watermelon for example) making this a nice stop for a fresh, natural snack. The prices were very fair and the lady working in here was very nice.

Having Loco along with Bulk Barn in my hood, I've already saved in terms of waste (due to…read moreunnecessary packaging) and got my organic GMO-free foodstuffs at prices that won't break the bank account. Whole Paycheck oops...I mean Whole Foods south of the border could probably learn something new from Loco. They are all about zero-waste here and you can't show up here expecting everything to be prepackaged for you. You bring your own bags, containers or you end up buying some of their glass containers (NOT plastic) to carry your stuff. It has made me use up all my Mason jars at home. The milk bottles have $2 deposits on them, the egg cartons are paper based. The dried pantry foodstuffs, cleaning agents, kombucha are all sold in bulk and by weight. The veggies are locally, Quebec grown and in the fall, winter and root vegetables rule here. There's a shared workspace downstairs and cafe in the front when you enter. The food market is in the back. The people who work here are super-chill and everyone here is clearly on the left. The place works on a co-op model. Places like Loco should be the norm everywhere.

Definitely somewhere I will try to shop more. Not only are whole foods (particularly non gmo and/or…read moreorganic) better to put in your body, but help our beautiful planet but using far fewer resources to produce. That being said, Loco not only brings these foods to you, but refrains from packaged products. Considering that nearly all food packaging is plastic or plasticized cardboard, this has a HUGE impact on the garbage created in our industrialized food system. I hadn't been prepared to actually shop here as I happened to be in the area killing time, but I did pick myself up some kombucha. A $1 deposit for my glass bottle (than is credited upon return if cleaned), and my kombucha only cost me $1.85! Yes it was for a smaller amount, but based on their price per gram it was still cheaper per volume than regular store bought kombucha, and I didn't feel like lugging a huge one around the rest of my day. They even had 4 kinds ready on tap! The concept is super simple! Bring your reusable containers (glass, tupperware, used windex bottle) and weigh it. Use the stickers provided to mark starting weight on your containers then shop, weigh and pay! I was impressed at their collection of goodies, ranging from miso paste t laundry detergent. Their fresh produce was limited however they've only been open for two weeks at this point. They even have a little lunch counter! The front half of the shop is host to a cafe and coworking space.
