This is the spot for baked goods in this area. It has variety and a lovely view of the river. I…read morehad a unique pear pie which has a similar filling to an almond croissant. Croissants were decent. Coffee amazing. So much so, I bought a bag to go. I only been here for lunch and afternoon coffee break, but they also have sandwiches and pizzas. What won me over, as with most of Quebec, is the civilized manner of running business. Never too busy to answer a question and when I forgot my coffee grounds, it was set aside and waiting for me the following morning.

We stopped by Pains d'Exclamation to pick out some bakery items for our long drive home. Having…read morestuffed myself with croissant from all the top-rated bakery in downtown Quebec-city a week earlier, I really wasn't expecting anything comparable from a tiny local bakery in La Malbaie. Well let's just say I was pleasantly surprised... My eyes popped open when I took my first bite into their croissant. It was so incredibly flaky throughout and the outer crust near the edges were delightfully crispy. I would say in terms of flakiness/crispiness, it's as good if not better than the croissants at Le Croquembouche and Paillard in QC. It's not quite as airy as the other two places I mentioned, but it's still in the top-3 of my favorite croissant places in QC (or anywhere for that matter). We also had the strawberry brioche, which was also very good. It wasn't too sweet which I liked, but by the time we ate it, the fruit had leaked into the bread making it a little soggy. Still delicious and eating that fresh would have been amazing. The two bakery items we tried were fantastic, however, I felt the service could have been better. We got a little attitude when we were ordering because we had a difficult time deciding what to get and felt we were rushed. Could have been the language barrier, but I think she could have been more patient. Regardless, putting up with a little attitude from auntie is a small price to pay for tasting their delightful baked goods. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area!

Chez Marie Bakery is cute and quaint, but that's it. The service wasn't friendly or welcoming. My…read morefamily and I (four adults) were the only patrons at the time and were greeted with a blank face. It felt as though they didn't care we were there. We informed the lady behind the counter in our broken French that we do not speak French and asked if she spoke English. If not, we were prepared to use our trusty language translator app on our phones. Thankfully she spoke English well enough to explain what she had available. There was also a very large man behind the counter who did not speak to us, but gave a slight smile. We ordered our pastries (yummy), but when my mom ordered a slice of bread with maple butter, the woman cut the bread in front of us without using gloves!! She handled the bread with her bare hands and scraped the butter out of a large bowl that had been sitting on the counter for who knows how long. Ewwwww!! We sat in the large dining area of the bakery to munch on our treats, and then spent a few moments to enjoy being in an old quaint French Canadian building. We didn't bother to look at the souvenirs on our way out because they were cheap items and looked as though they had been there forever. We noticed an older woman had joined the two others behind the counter, and they all seemed to be just as curious about us as we were about them. :-) I don't plan to ever go there again, but it was an interesting place to stop for a treat. If this bakery was in the USA I'd never patronize it, but since we were on a cultural tour of Quebec my family was excited to experience as much as we could. Unfortunately, we were not aware Chez Marie is a tourist trap and not worth visiting. Do I recommend it? No. BUT, I am happy we had the experience. Additional notes: There are restrooms for men and women on the premises. There is plenty of seating and free parking. A group of women on their bicycles arrived as we left and seemed to have no problem parking their bikes. The bakery seems to be wheelchair accessible, but the dining area is not. There are a few steps to walk up to get into the dining area. We paid cash, I'm not sure if they accept credit cards.

A place to get a snack and that's it There is the 78 year old owner Marie and her daughter who work there. Marie just stands there and says hello and daughter does all of the work. Your order the food and pay at the counter. I can't believe someone thinks the service was poor! What kind of service can you expect?

You don't want to be let down with mediocre or sub mediocrity in terms of food. This place really hit the mark. Like a total home run! Firstly it's a cracking good bakery with fresh artisanal bread. Secondly they do very high quality coffee. Thirdly they have sandwiches, soup and other great lunch items. My lunch I selected a seafood soup. It was rich, not salty and deliciously home made. Also as my ancestors must have come from the sea I had a Gaspesian smoked mackerel sandwich. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had in quite some time. Like blew my mind how good it was. It was tiny morsels of smoked fresh fish, thin apple slices. Shredded cabbage and a very nice light dressing. Holy macaroni it was amazing. I'd never think I'd have a smoked mackerel sandwich but I may try to replicate it at home. To round off the meal I ordered a capucinno and it was totally on point. Creamy. Piping hot and strong yet not bitter. To bring back to the grand ville I brought back two loaves of bread. Crispy, crunchy and soft in the centre. You would think a cafe like this would be in the Mille end Montreal or on Ave McGuire in QC or in SOHO in NYC but it's wonderfully amazing! When I Think of the options of coming here or eating at a place like St Hubert it's clear in my mind where I'd rather spend my money!
