I saw La Nautique and hoped that they would have an opening for a wandering traveler. I ordered whatever was fresh, caught here in the waters of Marseille - I have never tasted a better whole fish than here. Grilled whole with zucchini and peppers making a delicious ratatouille. Two glasses of rosé, and a beautiful view as the sun set over the port. I never caught the waitresses name, but she was so accommodating and friendly, and made me feel at home while I was alone.

The price quotes is 55 euros per person, with a two person minimum. To be honest, it was incredibly disappointing and not at all delicious. I would not order it again by any means, but I'm glad I can say that I tried it. It tastes like a fish stew with hints of curry. We also ordered the seafood spaghetti where the noodles were cut into short strands. I'm not sure if this is a common occurrence here but I prefer my spaghetti to be longer. The taste was great, it was a tomato based pasta topped with two delicious prawns. We also ordered the grilled octopus salad with garlic olive oil which was tasty. Overall, this meal was too pricey for what we received in return, although the markup comes from its location on the port.

The seafood was so incredibly fresh and delicious, it is the absolute best seafood we have ever eaten. And we are hard core "foodies". Our waiter was the most charming young man, he spoke excellent English and was very well educated in wines. We got a wonderful bottle of wine to go with our meal. We sat in the patio and had the most romantic evening, warm breeze, not crowded, good music playlist and just amazing food. In Cassis, we had lunch at a water-side restaurant, Le Grand Bleu, located on the harbor-front in Cassis, recommended by our tour guide. It was a comfortable and welcoming restaurant, but also elegant with white tablecloths. We had an exceptional lunch, and our group of four received excellent service from the attentive staff. We had a local wine and ordered the catch of the day, which was Sea Bass. It was accompanied by fresh vegetables. The Sea Bass was ample and cooked to perfection with Provencal herbs. We also shared an order of fresh pasta. The freshness and flavor of the Sea Bass was superb! We enjoyed dining at this restaurant so much! This lovely meal was followed by an absolutely gorgeous boat ride through the Calanques National Park of Cassis, France.

But we then remembered that any reservation before 8 is a very American thing to do! Around 8pm the restaurant began filling up with locals; we were at the right spot! Being out of the Old Port area, we didn't pay tourist pricing and probably had the best lobster we've had in a long time. The service staff is very friendly and interacted with us in English. This restaurant seems to specialize in raw and cold (crab and lobster) seafood, and it is excellent. We ordered oysters, uni, and clams and all were amazingly fresh, clean, and flavorful. The oysters and clams were briny and bright, while the uni was pure umami and not oceany like Santa Barbara or Hokkaido varieties often are. They have an English menu, and the wait staff were attentive and spoke English as well. Worth a special detour if you're ever in Marseille. Update since being in Nice: We have yet to find a place in Nice that even compares. We were hopeful that Peixes, with its incredible number for 5 star reviews, would be comparable. While decent, they were not even in the same class.

The oysters were fresh, but not nearly as large as I had hoped. At first, we were wowed by the huge platter of seafood in front of us, but in the end we were quite disappointed. Everything came out of the refrigerator. There isn't anything special about any of the crustaceans since none of them were flavored, just boiled, chilled and served. Had we know that, we probably would have skipped the place. On top of everything, the fiance got terrible food posioning that night.
