The ceilings and walls are lined with corks and you are kept warm in the winter by a number of barrel fireplaces. It actually feels like you are in the country. Willunga is really full of a lot of surprises. It is a real trek for me to get there; however I am never disappointed in what it has to offer. Russell's pizza got a massive hype when it first opened. Everyone in town was talking about what an amazing experience it is. They are always booked out with functions and small gatherings of friends, so be sure to call in advance. So what is the Russell's experience? Well, unlike many other venues, we rocked up with an esky full of drinks. Yes, can you see why I felt at home? They have a licence to allow BYO. Obviously you are to drink responsibly, but it really keeps the customers there for the night. The next part of the experience is the staff. They are all so friendly and helpful. They work super hard, but they keep a smile on their faces. They even stopped for a dance with us after our meal. Then there is the pizza. Oh the many pizzas! The bases are perfection. They are home made and rolled out in a sort of long fashion to fit on wooden boards. Toppings are all very creative and fresh. One pizza came out with oysters in the shell. Lovely! The sauce is really flavoursome. You could not really complain about anything. This is a great birthday or small function venue. You can pay a cost per head and you are provided with chef's selection pizzas until you say "no, I can't take it anymore! I will roll home if you keep going!" Russell's really feels like a party at one of my good friends home. I highly recommend this place if you have a birthday or gathering in the future.

Not at all, this modest, but atmospheric bit of Australiana produces pizzas which have few peers, whether you think of Rome, Naples, New York or Adelaide. Light, thin tasty bases, dressed with the best produce in true Italian fashion, not piled high, cooked to perfection in a woodfired oven. Good sizes, although a little pricey, our kids were the best critics, their fussy as most are - not a crumb left! The range has something for everyone, ham & pineapple, napoli, yes they're there, but so are seasonal vegetable, slow cooked turkish lamb, and many others. Just order from the board. Deserts are traditional tarts, panacottas and pies simple - all delicious. Staff are friendly, casual and eager to please, a special desert for the kids was no trouble. The only nitpick is, for a largely BYO restaurant, a $7 ph corkage charge for those drinking their own is a bit steep. It shouldn't put you off, but make sure you budget for it. Anyway, if you're in the neighbourhood, don't miss it!

We were impressed that they were open on a Tuesday night to start with (since that's our usual dining out night!), and when we arrived we were the only ones there! Actually, we were the only ones there the whole time - which is great because we were able to chat to the owner Greg, who is truly inspirational and passionate about his business. I just hope that they can stay open on Tuesdays! We started off by ordering a delicious Tempranillo (H&Y is the building in front of Pizza Kneads), and Greg brought out delicious local olives. I then ordered 'The Clarice' (yes - it's a lamb pizza!), and my partner ordered a Margherita (by which she judges all pizza shops). Both were absolutely delicious, and my partner declared it one of the best Margheritas she had ever tried! The ambiance is lovely (the oven is aesthetically pleasing as well as useful!), and there is a wide variety of all the materials you need to make pizza at home, as well as some other Willunga produce (like olive oil and herbs). All in all, we were super-impressed by this place, and already can't wait to go back and try more pizzas!! Oh - and they do gluten-free bases too ;)

Yes, Pizza Kneads is tucked away behind Hither and Yon, and yes it's 'way down south' in delightful Willunga; but that's no reason not to go! In my opinion every south Aussie should visit Willunga once a month anyway, so whilst you're there eat pizza at Pizza Kneads. It really couldn't be more simple. We chose to share 2 pizzas between us; a succulent lamb one, and an incredibly novel BLT one. Both were totally delectable. The base is thin but not overly crispy; the toppings are lavish enough so as not to overfill; but the thing that leaps out and smacks you square in the face is the freshness. The ingredients are SO fresh that one of them pinched my bottom! Yes - that fresh. If you add that to a wonderful outdoor eating area; staff as friendly as can be; reasonable prices and another reason to visit Willunga - I need make no further comment. They certainly satisfy my Pizza Kneads ......

Three cheers for Three Monkeys…read more Under the relatively new helm of Frieda (ex Flying Fish at Pt Elliot way back and now embarking on her own business) Three Monkeys has crossed the cafe divide from ho hum to well worth a visit. On a holiday Monday recently, Three Monkeys was brimming with other holiday makers lunching on their very simple but scrumptious gourmet items. The menu is based on local produce - and why wouldn't you be with McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu on your doorstep - and all freshly cooked. This quaint and quirky cottage has limited seating inside but a lovely outdoor area seating probably about 20 out back. There is also a delicatessen specialising in a very thoughtful and extensive range of cheeses and gourmet produce. Fantastic coffee also. I have my sights set on a weekend in Willunga soon to revel in this gorgeous town's over abundance of eateries. Friday night - Russell's Pizza, Sat morning Willunga Organic Market, Sat arvo drop into Three Monkeys for a delectable coffee and cake and pick up tasting plate supplies for a night in with a good drop of local Cab Sav by the fireside of a cute B & B (or a booking at Fino if I can't be bothered cooking) and finally breakfast Sunday am at the Green Room on High Street. Drive back along Aldinga Beach via the Victory Hotel at Sellicks and I have a weekend made in heaven!! Willunga in my opinion now beats McLaren Vale for a foodie weekend (excluding of course the legendary wine appeal of McLaren Vale)!

Then I read the menu (luckily breakfast finishes at 12pm otherwise I would have totally doubled up on my egg allocation for the day). And then the waitress apologised for serving a double shot of coffee to the customer, because that's how she always did it. And I knew my sensible eating plan for the day wasn't going to work. So instead of the planned "I'll just have some cheese and crackers," coming out of my mouth, I uncontrollably asked if I "could have the quinoa and carrot salad with fetta and flatbread please?" Before it arrived, I had talked myself into "just eating half of the salad and having the other half for dinner." And then I began to shovel piled forks of carrot and quinoa salad with dates and a white bean puree into my mouth and before I knew it, there was no doggy bag required. Even better was that they had run out of flatbread and so served me a couple of slices of their tomato polenta bread. It is now official, they should charge more than $13 for the salad and then ALWAYS serve this warmed and crispy with it in the future. Do not be fooled by the few seats inside and out the front, they have a lovely garden area out back for you to dine in with friends. This place would be delightful on a sunny autumn day or cold winter's morning and is one for the "bookmark" list of places to eat in Willunga.

On my last visit to almond country (Willunga) I made a bee line straight for this pub, located on the top of the main road. Packed with locals during dinner, to avoid the cold my friends and I chose to sit at one of the only remaining indoor tables--bar tables near the pool table and juke box. Service was good and fast and the traditional pub fare that I and one of my mates chose, Salt and Pepper Squid and Surf and Turf were hearty and tasty. My other friend chose the salad however and was punished as all health conscious vegetarians should be in a place like this, and her food was gross. The salad was covered in a grey gruel that looked like the weird nutrient food people eat in the Matrix, and half of an Avocado sat on her plate as if to say "cut it yourself you hippie". What we had really come to see was the open mic night where anyone can just get up and perform. This starts from about 9pm on a Thursday and for the most part was awesome. On the night I was there, there were several solo artists of varying degrees of talent, and a bagpiper. Of those I got to see, the best performer was one young local called Aiden who played an awesome mellow indy version of the theme song of Fresh Prince of Belair. It was a mate of mine's birthday and the bagpiper struck up the whole "Happy Birthday" and the entire bar serenaded my mate. The place also stocks my favourite cider, South Australia's own Aussie Cider.

Great for catching up with friends or alone to do some study or paper work. The breakfasts are expertly prepared and don't disappoint. I like the offering of fresh local salad greens with brekky, from the famed bickfords organics who also have a stall at the farmers market. They are second to none and add a nice piquancy to the palate. Perfect with eggs! If you are after a big Aussie style of brekkie it's not here or it will cost a fair bit with all the extras! There is also a scarcity of bread with the breakfast here I have noted, and perhaps this is a french thing? But there is definitely not enough to mop up that lovely egg juice, and then I reason, "less carbs my girl! You will survive another day!" And I do! The coffee is good but can be patchy on occasion. You forgive them because they are so sweet and we all want them to succeed! Hats off to the wine makers! Just outside of the main strip in McLaren Vale, you will be greeted with a lovely old homestead, vegetable patch, chicken shed and an array of buildings for different styles of entertaining. This is what we wish all our homes to look like. Oh, the country Life. Take note of the barn in front of you with the massive pizza oven. What a great space for functions overlooking the rolling hills and vineyards. Also, just next to it is an outdoor fireplace under a gazebo. I would love a Friday arvo knock off or Sunday sesh in there. And just over to the right, you will find the entry to the Cellar Door. Make your way through the front doors and you will find a large open space with one long bar. Great to handle a few group tastings at once, which is a must for the busy weekends. The staff here are ever so friendly and you can see that they are proud of the produce. They will share the story of each wine and educate you on why each wine earned it's name. Going through the flight you will have a range of options to suit your palate. After trying them all I would have to say my favourites being the Chardonnay and Skeleton Key Shiraz. The Chardonnay here is called the Minimalist and is true to it's name. It is lighter than most, with a light peach fruit flavour. It does not have the heavy oak flavour that the old varieties have which is great. The Skeleton Key Shiraz is bold, but it has a spiced slightly sweet berry flavour through the wine. Perfect for winter! Pop Penny's Hill on your list of wineries to visit next time you are in McLaren Vale. You will not be disappointed.
