My friends and I came here for lunch while visiting Chamonix for the day. Le Monchu serves a variety of Savoyard Mountain, French brasserie, and wood-fired cooking dishes. The restaurant is in an excellent location, offering an astonishing view of the mountain range. We really enjoyed getting to sit outside and take in these views with our meal! The atmosphere is also amazing and I loved the interior of the restaurant. It has a chic chalet style to it which provides for a lovely, slightly romantic ambiance. I thought the service was great as well. Our server spoke good English and was able to explain the menu to us. Food comes out freshly prepared in a timely manner too. I will say the prices are a little bit higher, but I think that is a reflection of the touristy nature of the area, along with Le Monchu's use of high quality ingredients and large portions. I ended up starting with the Sarti Spritz--which was excellent, a little pricey, but strong with good flavor. My friends ended up ordering the gazpacho and French onion soup and thoroughly enjoyed it! For our mains, we ended up splitting 2 fondues between the 4 of us. My one friend and I had to try the Wood-Fired Raclette cheese that was served with charcuterie and potatoes. This was a whole experience as the cheese is served with a wood-fired burner and you are meant to shave the melted cheese off to accompany the accoutrements. The cheese had a deeper, sharper flavor than traditional fondue, but was HEAVENLY. I have no complaints about this and was very happy with it overall--would recommend. My other two friends ordered the Savoyarde Traditionnelle Fondue which included garlic & white wine, accompanied by charcuterie and diced bread. This was more of your standard fondue served in a large melting pot. The flavors of this fondue were different from the Raclette, but also very good. The portion was huge and we struggled to finish it. Overall, Le Monchu was an excellent choice for lunch while visiting Chamonix. The atmosphere was everything, the service was great, and food was absolutely amazing! While the prices are definitely higher, it is definitely worth it. Overpriced food of poor quality and horrible service where, as others have said, we were just ignored for ages and ages. We couldn't even get them to bring the bill. Looking around, this lack of service seemed to be the case with many others as well. The food was mediocre at best. This is a highly overpriced tourist trap with negligent staff. It's such a shame because we had such a great meal with wonderful service the previous night but this experience left a sour taste. I would strongly recommend trying someplace else in fact just about any place else. read more

My first day on European adventure in Mount Blanc. Group dinner (I went with amazing guided tour co..blue sky trekking adventures) we went to Le Monchu. This whole trip excited about food eating in not only France for six days but last two in Italy. Le Monchu the exterior has moulin rouge vibe from the colors, vibe, and maybe perception being in France. The outdoor patio is huge. It perfect swathe be outside enjoy blessed look in skies mountains Mount Blanc around u. The menu is pretty daunting at first. It decent size it both in French and English. Lot of the times reading description of each one. I ended up going with goat cheese salad and carbonara pasta dish. The goat cheese was refreshing from goat cheese nice hearty salad. The pasta nice creamy plus egg yolk mixed it in was heavenly. Heavy dish with all cream and egg yolk but filling. Raclette. That was star of the show. I got try bit from someone else. Start the presentation was wow! I never seen anything like that before in life. The whole charcoal tower, quarter of Raclette cheese rind, beautiful spread of deli meats and more together with cheese, and move cheese close to tower it melts cheese on plate. It was amazing! If ever go back to Chamonix and hills of Mount Blanc. Le Monchu be back! read more

This restaurant is an overpriced scam that serves bad food to unknowing tourists. Service was somehow just as bad as the food.

We had high hopes for Le Monchu. **We had a much better meal, wonderful service & great ambiance at La Caleche the night before. 5:30 reservation and were told we'd have to be out by 7pm. 6:00 got our appetizers & bottle of wine and then were ignored for an hour! After finishing our appetizers, a bus boy came a took all our silverware and bread plates. We assumed they'd bring fresh silverware with entree. Nope! The guy who took our order (manager?) as well as all the rest of the staff walked past our table for an hour and not one person checked in with us. We finally flagged down "Julie" who apologized and got our dinner to us at 7:15. 8pm: She brought us thimble sized "complimentary" limoncello liqueur as an apology with the dessert course. It wasn't until later when I looked back at the check that I saw we were charged for them! We still left them a tip despite the extremely neglectful service. Aside from the delicious onion soup, the food was mediocre at best. Fun fact: we were seated near the bus station where they combine leftover bread from other tables to bring out for customers. My group of 8 had an amazing dinner at Le Monchu. We ordered a little bit of everything... fondue, raclette, tartiflette, charcuterie and cheese board. Stick with the local cheesy, meaty dishes and you won't be disappointed. The service was pretty good but not great... we had to get up and find our waiter in a couple occasions but that was only because they were so busy on a Saturday night. Make reservations in advance (especially for large group) or you will find a 1-2 hour wait. read more

Amazing cozy atmosphere. We ate here after all small hike. The next day after a much longer hike, over 8 miles, we spent the last two hours of the hike daydreaming of another night of fun eating at this wonderful restaurant. The first night, we had the Raclette. Essentially melted cheese with cold cuts and potatoes. It is wonderful and one order is certainly enough for two people. The onion soup is outstanding. The signature drinks are outstanding. My wife thoroughly enjoyed, quite appropriately ;) (jk) the pornstar martini. If you don't have reservations, I recommend coming very early. There are seating options for walk-ins. We were here at the end of shoulder season, cold, and rainy, so the outdoor option was not available to us. I saw many other beef options on the table that I wanted to explore, but our trip timing would not allow for any more visits. Pork chop was excellent. Carbonara was also very good but there were several small bone fragments mixed in with the ham pieces. Service was excellent. The best thing was French onion soup! We arrived at 6:30 and were seated on a first-come-first-served basis, which opens at 6:30 in the evenings - this is your only option if you don't have a reservation. And it gets full fast! We ordered a variety of food and everything was exceptional. The ambiance is old-world charm, decorated with farm-type tools and accessories. It gets very crowded every night so it can get quite noisy. We were all very happy with our experience here and will definitely go again when we're in Chamonix... only next time we'll be sure to make a reservation! :) read more

We're a family of four traveling Europe, and Le Monchu gave us the worst service so far. My husband's beer didn't arrive, and when we politely asked, the staff responded rudely: "When it's not here, it's not ready." Then, the original waitress looked at him and snapped: "Can you not ask again once you order? JUST WAIT." Our kids witnessed this humiliation. We truly felt singled out -- like this wouldn't have happened if we weren't Asian. The manager apologized, but the damage was done. To fellow Asian travelers: be careful. Went to go eat here on a recommendation from the hotel receptionist. Upon walking in I was immediately struck with a pungent feces smell. I went sniffing around in the lobby trying to see if maybe a dog pooped in there but I think it was the smell of something they were cooking. It was quite repulsive. Against my better judgment I went in to try to eat and was seated next to the entrance in the worst possible table with bar & wait staff foot traffic and the door constantly opening and closing. As I sat down I noticed a hair on my plate. After waiting a few minutes for a server I decided to leave and rest my luck elsewhere. Can't comment on the food but the repulsive smell and crummy service was more than enough to turn me away. After looking at a few other reviews it appears maybe they treat Americans poorly. read more

After hiking, we came across this with a couple of friends. Food did not fail and we enjoyed our evening. Prices were at range and the service was great. Staff were friendly and seated our large group. Provided our wine fast and all the orders were correct. We got a variety of food. Their beef Tartar is exceptional. Their plating and food sizes are perfect. No complaints from this restaurant. Tip: walk-ins are okay but be aware that most of the tables will be reserved so definitely make a reservation! read more

The reviews for this place are all over the place, and I'm not sure why. A group of nine of us went to end a wonderful week in Chamonix and had a terrific time. They were very gracious about accommodating a large group, and were more than happy to accommodate what was I'm sure a very annoying request to split the check unevenly among five credit cards. We ordered the traditional fondue, the fondue bourguignon, and the raclette, and loved all three. Delicious a traditionally served, and the do it yourself aspect is really fun. Staff was eager to help when we ran into an issue with one of the burners, and was always at hand when we needed more wine :) The prices were very reasonable, the food good, and the service friendly. Went with our family of 8 for dinner. It was both delicious and unique. One pair shared a cheese fondue and a very large (aka small) salad that they liked very much. Two other pairs shared sliced steak and veggies that you cooked on a table-top wood fired barbecue- OUTSTANDING!. Two of the children just wanted pasta, but one sampled cooking some meat, and he loved it! This may have been the best meal we've had since arriving in France over a week ago. Was really looking forward to dine at this place. I had a very nice bottle of wine someone had offered me I wanted to bring. I asked the general manager for corkage fee. I was told there was no such thing. I told them I was flying out tomorrow and didn't want to loose this very nice bottle of wine (since I couldn't bring it in the plane with me). I offered to pay for whatever the owner would want to charge me to cover for the loss of a bottle of wine. I got a cold shrug from the owner who couldn't care less. I am an American. I like good service and I like to reward good service with good tips. I got such a bad welcoming that we decided to leave and went to the caleche instead where we got a much better experience. Remark: many french restaurants are closed between 5 pm and 7 pm or only serve drinks . This place will serve food at that time and will be less crowded Ambiance: beautiful decor with local historic artifacts and museum like feel. It gets very hot inside - poor ventilation in some parts of the restaurant. Food: excellent. I went there two nights in a row . Fois Gras dish with caramelized apples - top notch, perfectly cooked, nice balance of flavors, must try. Escargot - well done and fresh . I enjoyed raclette experience , but wouldn't order again . It is fun to try, but the pairings were too simple . Meats from the grill - I had veal t- bone, nice presentation, but not anything special. Service : very busy restaurant, service was top notch despite all of the demands . Overall - 4 stars, highly recommend it . read more

Very original French alp restaurant serving a variety of fondue including meat, cheese and everything in between. We had the raclette and the meat fondue, both really good. Finished off with crepes with sucker was delicious. All in all less of a tourist trap versus many of the other fondue restaurants in town. Remember to book table in advance as the restaurant is busy. So much yum. My husband and I loved everything about this place. We are staying at an extremely disappointing hotel (Hotel Alpina) but the restaurant is in great proximity. Every staff member was incredibly friendly and spoke great English and enjoyed our trying French. Fondue Royal is an absolute must. We will absolutely be back on our next visit out. Horrific experience. Avoid at all costs. Fell for this tourist trap lured in by the riverside location and modern looking terrace. Ordered a fondue which you'd think they can make well given how much they feature it on the menu. What we received was a disgusting oil slick. A block of stringy cheese and a layer of liquid oils floating on top of it. When brought to attentio.n of the waitstaff were told is normal, the waiter stirred it with a spoon for 2 seconds and left. We were given the callous service of an establishment that does this regularly - exploit those new to town, take their money and then ignore their complaints. Look at the photo and think about whether you want to eat at any place that would serve this to a customer. Whoever the chef or manager is should be deeply ashamed. read more

I came here with an American friend who we allowed to order....and older white, French server....as soon as we ordered attempted to start a row with us and humiliate us in front of other diners....it seemed he went out of his way to make us feel alienated and uncomfortable....at one point after we ordered our starters...he turned his back and made a noise like an infant.....it was obvious he was treating us awfully....slamming plates down on our table.....finally in the presence of a female server I spoke up and told him to relax and not slam plates down....this is a poor way to treat us as we were very polite and perhaps there was a communication deficit or cultural impasse....but this was the last time he returned to our table....and the lovely female server took care of us perfectly...... It seems this guy just wanted to start a fracas to augment and declare his status and insult the Americans as uncouth...... My hotel booked this restaurant for us and two of my friends had birthdays....I went early to introduce myself and discuss this with the maitred, who was pleasant.....we did not have dessert and were glad to leave after our mains....... I was furious and made eye contact with the waiter as I left and waved at him......to see if now he wished to treat me obtusely, but he busied himself and appeared to cower from a exchange that would involve me honey dipping his head in the toilet....what a coward.....he just wanted to insult us...and provide poor service....and I want everyone to know of our experience there....yet the food was good....our female waitress kind and apologizing.... Good EXCEPT for the fondue! The restaurant was cozy, the servers were friendly and spoke passable english, and most of the traditional Swiss food was very good. However, the fondue came out half thin liquid and half thick unmelted cheese. By the time everyone else finished their meals, the fondue was finally fully melted, but still remained an odd stringy consistency where you had to pull apart each bite. great location in this small town center. It is recomended by the hotel receptionist. 3of us. me my daughter and my wife got their with expectations of local style food. However. the experience was almost damaging our trip of ski. Here I want to mention the tall waiter without bear. It seems he is not happy with our coming in. Gave us a poker face from the begining to finishing. SLAMMED the plates on the table without noticing we had a kid with us. and after a 40 mins of eating. I felt all the waiters kept eyeing on us and looked like we are too long to dining.The food is so so too. I will check the YELP before choosing sites next time for sure. read more
