The original artwork on the wall of Le virguna

Outstanding fine dining with a heavy African influence, great service, and excellent ambiance. There is no one particular culture that Le virunga represents. Our menu featured a fufu dish, the drinks pointed towards Kenya (I had the "sawa tonic"--incredibly refreshing), and South Africa is well represented in the wine cellar. The waiters are very knowledgeable and attentive. My partner wanted a vegetable dish, which they did not have on their menu (the menu changes constantly depending on the season), but the waiter said that the chef would create a dish just for her. Her dish ended up being a sort of githeri (a bean and corn dish from Kenya) over fufu, served with spicy chili on the side. I ordered a beef dish which came with purees of potato and plantain, peas, and small greens. We were fortunate enough to order the last dessert they had left, a semolina cake with chocolate mousse and whipped cream. A delicious way to end our evening!

As all restaurants are trying to adapt to new measures and standards while surviving and innovating, lots of my fav restos are doing take-outs and Le Virunga is one of them I got a menu for two that was amazingly affordable and delicious, more than enough for two! They also have a great wine menu that you can grab from to pair w your meal The food is hearty, comforting, tasty & full of flavors! I absolutely recommend this for your chilly evenings coming our way

I came here twice in 2 weeks and although I preferred it the first time, It's an excellent upscale restaurant that is very unique when compared to other places in Montreal. The first time I came here was with a bunch of girlfriends for a birthday. The staff are super nice and helpful, taking the time to explain the menu options and answer questions. I ordered the Sukisa (Braised goat over a purée of manioc and plantains) the first time and liked it so much that I ordered it again the next time. Both times tasted delicious but the cut of meat the second time wasn't as good as the first. The portion size was reduced and the bulk of the plate was bone unfortunately. Other than that, the flavours were delicious. All of their dishes are well seasoned and mild in spice level to please the majority. I love spicy food so they happily offered some homemade hot pepper sauce which was greatly appreciated. The second time, I also tried the Le Virunga salad which was presented beautifully. It was so yummy. I also shared another main but I honestly don't remember what it was. It tasted good though! Again, beautiful presentation. The restaurant itself is small, cozy and very tastefully decorated. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and it was perfect for an occasion with friends or a date night. Prices are relatively high (around 27-28$ for the mains for portions on the smaller side depending on the dish) but worth it for the incredible flavour combinations. Looking forward to coming back!

Excellent ambiance and food, a neighborhood gem with a very good selection of African wines at a reasonable price!! A wonderful experience with friends. Lovely decor and music, which was not too loud so we were able to enjoy dinner conversation. For starters we tried their Argentinian shrimp and the Maradi which is a cassava couscous with pan fried eggplant and okra, both were deliciously seasoned and the okra was prepared to perfection without a sliminess which happens if not prepared properly. The mains were equally delicious, we had the Faguibine which is the duck with sweet potatoes pure and spinach, we requested the duck be cooked to medium instead of rare. The Chef accommodated us and it was perfect, not dry at all. The other main was the Mouton and also deliciously prepared. Their sauces are mouth watering. Of course we had the desserts, we tried both desserts, the Crepes and the Bananas and chocolate cloud which was very similar to chocolate mousse and they too were excellent. Our wine paired perfectly with the meal, it was an organic wine from Africa, a blend of cabernet and merlot. We will certainly return and encourage you to go dine at Le Virunga. Last but not least was the wonderful and attentive service. Our waitress was very accommodating and knowledgeable. Merci pour un très bon repas et un belle soirée.

I had an amazing experience here late November. Review long overdue. Food was fantastic and the service was top notch. The lady there took time to explain the food to us and made us feel so cozy and welcomed. Highly recommended, and had been raving about it to my family and friends.

TLDR: Lip-smacking food and fabulous honest service. We went to Le Virunga in the beginning of May looking to try a new and exciting cuisine, and that it exactly what was delivered. Le Virunga is a fusion of different African flavours that work well and deliver mouthwatering dishes. There is a reason why they made it on Eater's 38 Essential Montreal Restaurants for Spring 2017. Despite Zoya training a new waitress, we received premium service and attention. Zoya was extremely knowledgeable and helped us better understand the dishes so we could select the ones we would most enjoy. Moreover, she easily directed us to the best wine pairing for our meal. While we waited for the food, we were brought some spiced nuts and paper thin plantain chips to munch on. They were so tasty that we asked for more and they sweetly obliged us. For the appetisers, my mother and I shared the poutine and it was more than enough for the two of us just as Zoya informed us. The poutine was tasty with the different cuts of starches such as potato and cassava. It was topped with yummy chunks of goat and succulent au jus gravy. The mushrooms dispersed throughout the bowl was extremely enjoyable. The poutine was topped with white cheese that provided great brightness to the overall dish. In my opinion, the bacon was unnecessary, but I know most would disagree with me. My father enjoyed a soup that brought a smile to his face. I wish I recalled what he ate, but it involved seafood and I didn't try it as I do not enjoy anything that comes from a body of water. For the mains, my father ordered the Congolese fish stew that I was told was yummy. My mother got the lamb which arrived with steamed sweet rice flour bread, and I the goat which was paired with steamed cassava bread. Whenever given the option, I will always go with goat dishes as it's not an easy meat to cook or find in restaurants. The lamb melted in your mouth and was soul-satisfying. The goat fell off the bone and was sublime. The juicy well-balanced flavours danced in our mouths. I enjoyed both buns thoroughly as my mother and I traded one of each. They soaked up the juices of the dish wonderfully and left us all quite satisfied. The desserts were out of this world. Fluffy Plantain doughnuts and a chocolate mousse sitting in a coconut tuile bowl. The doughnuts were exquisite and light, not heavy at all. I still crave those doughnuts at least once a week. The mousse was velvety and indulgent, and the tuile had the perfect snap to it. They brought us the desserts together with a candle as it was my birthday. The decor is fun and vibrant, and the atmosphere of le Virunga is addictive. I'm excited to check out their summer menu, which I am certain will be just as sensational as their spring menu.

This was my first time trying African food, the flavours were amazing. The service was great. I had the chicken dish, the sauce was delicious. The chicken was tender and juicy. I tasted a bit of the lamb dish from my friend, it also tasted great. The rice cakes were great. They also serve a hot sauce which enriches the flavours even more. For appetizers, I had the fish with eggplant sauce. It was delicious. I also had the shrimp with coconut sauce, it was also delicious. I liked it better than the fish with eggplant sauce.

We had a beautiful experience at Le Virunga. I've been dying to try that place for quite some time and God... I wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere is very cosy with a nice selection of African music. The service was EXCELLENT. And as for the food.... as an African girl this is not the place where you will find traditional African dishes... but!!! the flavors were as authentic as traditional dishes you can come across in Congo, Ivory Coast or Togo... The mix of flavors and ingredients was made in heaven. So for me le Virunga's African fusion concept is a complete win. (I will not mention their hot sauce, it was authentic, flavoured and hot as it should.) Highly recommend and will definitely return.

Chicken pate appetizer that is as good as it looks !

I really wish I paid more attention when Zoya was giving the description of every single dish! But I gradually stopped listening when the food was in front of my face lol it looked to good! They put so much thought into every single detail and the chef (Maria) gives her take on the tradition dishes she grew up on and presents everything in such a sophisticated way! Honestly, Great service ! Awesome people! Amazing food!

All I can say is delicious! The drinks and food were awesome and flavorful. Glad we took advice from a friend to come here!

Sooooo delicious! Like many people I wanted to venture out and try a new cuisine. We went on Valentine's Day. The restaurant offered a special menu with a wine pairing ($80pp with the wine $49 without). The meal did not disappoint. Listen, everything was delicious and well prepared. The spices permeated throughout the restaurant. The servers were attentive. Be prepared to wait a bit for your meal (perhaps because it was a special menu) because there are only two servers for the entire restaurant. I wish I took more pictures of the food, but i was too busy devouring. Also, an artist came and sang some love songs. The space is quite intimate and it worked well. Most definitely will return.

Not bad! My grandmother actually recommended this place to me and we went for dinner on a Wednesday…read morenight. The menu is kinda small. No desserts or alcoholic drinks. It's really just the main meal and a side dish. Everything is cheap, nothing is more than 25$ a plate. I decided to get the 1/4 chicken with fries and my grandmother got the chicken skewer with fries. We also added a side order of banana plantain for 5$. My chicken was seasoned in a way that I didn't feel the burn coming until after I was done eating. It snuck up on me and my eyes wouldn't stop watering even after I had finished eating. It was still very good. I was really impressed with their fries surprisingly! They were really crisp and fresh. The banana plantain was also delicious. I wish I had had more room to eat them. Portions are a bit big so if you're a light eater get a plate to share. The food took a long time to arrive so make sure to plan accordingly. Don't show up ravenous expecting your meal to get there in 10 minutes. It took about 35-40 minutes to arrive. At the end of the meal the waitress told us that next time we should order in advance and they will call us when it's ready and we can show up. Not a horrible solution. Service is nonexistent though. The waitress only came by twice. To take our order and then to serve us our order. When you're done you ring the bell at the cash register and they make you pay. At least she was nice. The restaurant itself is small but not crowded. They are all medium high chairs which isn't the most comfortable but manageable. Next time we plan on picking a table with chairs that aren't high (there's only one). They don't play any music so it can get quite quiet. We were there with 3 other parties but halfway through the meal we were done to one party and us. You could really feel the emptiness. No one else came to eat so it was just us till the end. It's worth a try if you're in the neighbourhood and feel like a little something different.

Chicken is savoury and never dry, plantain soft and sweet, hot pepper on the side. Everything tastes fresh and the portions are generous. They also have bissap and ginger juice which is great to sip on while you wait for your order. Definitely call in advance to shorten your wait time. On the flip side, the service here is terrible. Waitress barely speaks, looks annoyed to be taking your order, owner comes out of the kitchen to side-eye you and tell you that you're not allowed to dine in, etc. Sadly, this is what I've grown used to when it comes to African-run businesses. Let's just say "the customer is #1" doesn't exactly apply back home. I think business owners should adapt to the culture and standards of the country in which they've settled. However this is a conversation beyond the scope of this yelp review. At the end of the day, that chicken is good enough for me to keep coming back despite the neglect!

They take credit/debit card (most west african spots don't and you know why, if you're west african). Food looks good at first glance. Negatives: Food was bland (it needed salt to wake it up). The portions are horrendous. Not sure if this is a Montreal thing because all of the food in this city seems to be child size, just like Paris. I ordered jollof with chicken for $15 cad. I got a massive amount of rice and two tiny pieces of chicken. Shouldn't it be the other way around? The chicken was mostly fat/skin and bones. I had to use a knife at my hotel to dissect the actual meat of the chicken. If i wanted more chicken, it was $2 per piece...that is ridiculous. I originate from New York City, which has many west african spots and much better value (which is sad because nyc is known for being expensive). Even in Toronto, I can get a plate of jollof rice/huge pieces of chicken with salad and plantain for $10 cad. Summary: When I come to a nigerian or ghanian or any west african spot...I come to EAT. That is the only reason why I'm here. If you've ever been to any west african country...you know that the portions are ON POINT. As someone who can actually make this food, i felt cheated. Overall, its not worth it.

So appreciate her HONESTY in giving feedback on our best options for the event we were trying to hold and not selling us on what could not be delivered for the sake of upselling. I was a little nervous because, she was out of town and her husband, Sunday would be catering the entire thing. I shouldn't have been worried because he was the consummate professional, very helpful (even let me use his GPS for the weekend because I kept getting lost coming from Montreal) and went above and beyond to help us host our family and new in-laws in style! The restaurant remained open upstairs, and there were a steady stream of people coming in to dine-in or take out, and after tasting the food (including the legendary Suya) I understood why. They have multiple spots for dine in upstairs, along with 2 tvs and a full bar. Downstairs is their event space and we comfortably accommodated around sixty people there with no issues. The menu included egusi soup and pounded yam, coolers of jollof rice, EXCELLENT meat pies, EXCELLENT suya, chin chin, amazing dried fish, and mixed meat in stew that disappeared before I even got a chance to see it!
