9/7 Update: Cathy Waters, the Manager of The Gym has terminated my contract and had me escorted…read morefrom The Gym because of my honest and thorough review. I've worked out at Golds, Eos, Vasa, Planet, and 24 in the last few years. This is my second time being a member of The Gym and I'm regretting it more than the first time. The Gym is by far the worst managed gym out of all the choices you have along the Wasatch front and at their price point I expect a lot more. Entrances: there are two entrances to the gym. One on Regent Street with two elevators that go to the third floor where the gym is located. These doors lock in the late afternoon causing you to be forced to use the second entrance further north. This entrance is accessed through the busiest elevator at the mall. Expect to wait 3-5 minutes during prime time or even more during the holidays. The gym itself: It's dirty, poorly managed, and the equipment isn't maintained well. Here is a list of things currently broken or needing attention: Hip abductor linkage is worn out and causes lots of play making it unusable. I pointed this out to maintenance staff in June. Still not fixed. 9/5/20 Seated leg curl has been broke for three weeks. 9/5/20 Handles on lateral raise machine won't adjust making it difficult to use depending on your height and frame size. They tried a cheap fix by putting oversized bolts in it but actually made it worse as now the handles don't adjust at all. 9/5/20 The 5 lb adjustment on the laying leg curl Machine is missing the non-removable spring loaded pin. Currently there's some random pin in it that you can completely remove allowing the weight to drop unexpectedly. 9/5/20 Multiple incline benches are missing their knobs making adjusting the bench difficult and risk pinching your fingers. 9/5/20 Worn out, cracking vinyl on multiple benches. 9/5/20 The foot plate on the calf raise machine is missing 2/3 bolts holding it on the machine and is very loose. If that last bolt shears off like the other two, someone gonna get hurt. 9/5/20 Both non-removable pins on the lat pull down machines are missing and have random pins from other machines in them allowing for lots of play when you use it. 9/5/20 Worn out pads on pat pull down. These have been like this since 2018. 9/5/20 The north decline bench presses is missing a pad making it unusable. 9/5/20 One of the two stair masters isn't level and wobbles while you're using it. I'm writing this review on it now. Wobble wobble wobble with every step. 9/5/20 Emergency stop button on stair master doesn't work. They covered it up with black electrical tape instead of replacing the button. 9/5/20 The two spin bikes in the Cardio Cinema are unusable. 9/5/20 Vibration Plate hasn't worked for over a year. 9/5/20 Multiple drinking fountains are missing activation buttons. 9/5/20 Steam room in men's locker room has been broken for well over a month. 9/5/20 It's always hot as hell. As I wrote this review, it's 76 degrees in the area with all the cardio machines. 9/5/20 This gym could be great but it needs better management and some capital investment instead of it being used as a cash cow like it is now.

I add my voice to the countless others in stating that The Gym has great potential under proper…read moremanagement. The space is large, with many desired amenities, and a great equipment selection (although under serious decay). This was the gym that Salt Lake needed, when it first opened. However, maintenance and the addressing of member concerns are of little concern to Cathy, the manager. The Gym has an unfortunate monopoly, allowing the institution to move forward with little consequence, paying no heed to member-realized issues. They rely heavily on large company contracts, giving little concern to those of us who individually pay for this "premium" space. There is a full-time maintenance manager, I repeat a FULL-TIME maintenance personal, but you would never know it. The facility to sorely under-kept. The showers are molding, in desperate need of a cleaning and re-caulking. Equipment will remain under "repair" for weeks on end, and up until recently, the space was filthy. They have recently hired a seemingly full-time cleaner, Claire, who is a sweetheart and does a wonderful job in dusting and wiping down equipment. However, after so many years of neglect and lack of concern, management has allowed a culture of not cleaning up mutual work spaces to grow. Weights and other items are left strewn everywhere. Towels are often ripped and should be referred to as a hand-towel as they are barely large enough to wrap around one's body. The hot tub has been down for over two months, and the steam room has been non-functioning for over two weeks, with no notice or email sent to members keeping us abreast on the situation, offering apologies for the inconvenience. Instead time and resources are focus on silly line-items such as ensuring the light in the sauna stays on and is bright enough to perform open-heart surgery, or ordering hideous, unnecessary furniture and art. Further evidence of mismanagement is seen in the fact that they have a very difficult time keeping employees. Workers seem to stick around but a moment. I am anxious to see their monopoly pedestal erode with Eos announcing its move to purchase the 24hr fitness space in trolley square, opening 2024. You've got a year Cathy, to show us how great this gym can be, otherwise you'll watch as all the gays take our business to a cleaner, newer space. It's also key to note that I'm posting this review, concerned that I will be revoked of my membership for letting my voice be heard. I should never feel as such, under any circumstance.

Destiny is a guide, sacred witness, educator, incredibly skilled and knowledgeable in the birth world, but most importantly a present, loving, and deeply respectful human. She supported us throughout the whole process and was available for check/ins, meetings, and provided us with so much helpful information, resources, and referrals in the birth community.  She is a throughout communicator and is very organized and well connected in the birth community. She is deeply respected as an expert and we felt trustworthy of her and her recommendations/information provided.  If you are exploring a birth doula or postpartum doula, I truly cannot recommend Destiny more. She is a delightful human to be in your circle during such a potent time as pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She brings knowledge, evidenced base research, as well as an embodied, heartfelt, intuitive wisdom.

I visit several studios and found that some of them lacked any kind of personality. My daughter is extremely out-going, but still would benefit from a smile and some gentle guidance in a youth class. I was also turned off that many studios require long-term contracts. Given my daughter is 4, I want her to continue with what she is enjoying and has an interest in and don't want to force her to keep going if she decides it's not for her. Utah Self Defense has been amazing. I actually found it when another studio recommended them because they don't cater to young children. Their prices are extremely reasonable and there's no contract. Shihan Carlos and the office manager Morgan are really friendly and have been great with getting my daughter acclimated to Karate. She's excited to go and when class is over, she doesn't want to leave. That says a lot to me about how they are treating her. The class is demanding and structured but the instructors are friendly and give guidance firmly but with kindness. I also like that the owners make it feel like a family, hosting holiday parties and other events where kids and parents can come meet each other and connect around the common interest of Karate.

The instructors have a love and passion for what they do -- and that love and passion is clearly conveyed in their instruction. They teach not only karate skills but also life skills. Before a student can advance a belt he or she has to meet with the head instructor and confirm that the student is doing well in school and doing what they are supposed to be doing in their home life. Notably, USDF has been very supportive of not only my 11-year-old son but also my 9-year-old daughter, who doesn't even take karate but who they nevertheless support in her separate dance activities. USDF is like a family and they care for their students as if they were family. I would encourage anyone looking at putting their son or daughter in karate to give serious consideration to USDF. It is the very first place I would put my kids. Period.

They told me the truss rod was maxed out and that I'd have to drop down to 11s, which honestly felt like a gut punch after everything I'd invested in that guitar. On a whim, I stopped into Murphy's since they're a Martin dealer and I wanted to try a D-28. Not only did they take the time to talk with me and let me play, but they were genuinely friendly, engaged, and clearly passionate about guitars and music. I didn't feel rushed or like a burden at all -- which is rare these days. When I mentioned my issue, they offered to take a look. The owner, Wes Dodson, personally stepped in and checked out my J-45. Within minutes, he did what the first shop didn't -- properly adjusted and freed up the truss rod, got it functioning again, and set the guitar up the way it should have been in the first place. He got my guitar playing perfectly with the 13s I wanted, with great action and feel. Total night-and-day difference. I can't say enough about the level of care, honesty, and skill I experienced here. These guys know what they're doing, and more importantly, they actually care. Murphy's Guitars has absolutely earned my business going forward. If you're anywhere in Utah and need a shop you can trust, this is the place.
