I had an incredible experience at Murphy's Guitars in Bountiful and felt like I needed to share it. I drove over an hour from Coalville after getting some pretty discouraging news from another shop about my Gibson J-45. They told me the truss rod was maxed out and that I'd have to drop down to 11s, which honestly felt like a gut punch after everything I'd invested in that guitar. On a whim, I stopped into Murphy's since they're a Martin dealer and I wanted to try a D-28. Not only did they take the time to talk with me and let me play, but they were genuinely friendly, engaged, and clearly passionate about guitars and music. I didn't feel rushed or like a burden at all -- which is rare these days. When I mentioned my issue, they offered to take a look. The owner, Wes Dodson, personally stepped in and checked out my J-45. Within minutes, he did what the first shop didn't -- properly adjusted and freed up the truss rod, got it functioning again, and set the guitar up the way it should have been in the first place. He got my guitar playing perfectly with the 13s I wanted, with great action and feel. Total night-and-day difference. I can't say enough about the level of care, honesty, and skill I experienced here. These guys know what they're doing, and more importantly, they actually care. Murphy's Guitars has absolutely earned my business going forward. If you're anywhere in Utah and need a shop you can trust, this is the place. read more

Murphy's has been convenient as I live in Bountiful and I was excited to hear Ray (one of the top repair guys in the area who has done work for me for nearly a decade) had moved his repair business there. I've had questionable service for the last couple years with seemingly disorganized repair schedules, putting down deposits to get on Ray's schedule only to have to call back months later to remind them I was waiting then suddenly I'm up next, having to call back when I've heard nothing after them having a guitar for weeks only to have it suddenly done, etc. I have VERY NICE guitars in my collection and I buy and sale VERY NICE guitars. I don't trust them with just anyone. Most recently, I requested a binding repair on one of my artist signature model guitars worth more than $2K. I paid a deposit in JULY. Per usual I had to call a couple of times to make sure they hadn't forgotten about me and I was finally told to drop it off. I asked up front twice how much it would cost and was given a number I could work with. I also spoke directly to Ray about how long it would take (and why). When more than double that time had passed I started calling back. Finally my guitar is done (after another call). I go to pick it up and there are new finish cracks where a clamp was used. No apologies, just "huh ... i've never seen that before ...". Ray flips it and flops it around standing right by the counter and I think "he's gonna bang my guitar". Sure enough "BANG", hits my headstock and there is now a new ding it. No apology, didn't even acknowledge hitting it or look to see if damage was done. He tried to buff out the finish cracks he had caused but it didn't work. Offered to keep it for another week (which in Murphy's time is apparently at least a month) to try to fix it but my trust was shot. If he handles my guitar like that right in front of me, what does he do when I'm not looking? Then they rang me up and tried to charge me nearly twice what I had been quoted. I protested and they backed it down a bit but still probably $50-60 more than I was expecting. So they essentially over-charged me to reduce the value of a guitar I was having repaired to sell. Since I've known Aaron a long time and know a thing or two about leadership and team management, I expressed my concern about the organization of their schedule and how expectations are not met. He basically shrugged it off as "that's luthiery" and made excuses rather than hearing the concerns of a long-time customer wanting to see his business succeed. So, if anyone knows of a good TRUSTWORTHY, ORGANIZED repair guy, please let me know as - after giving them nearly a decade of business - we won't be back even to buy strings. What a shame. read more

I could not have asked for a better experience at Murphy's! I heard that Ray had started working in their shop recently, so I swung by to have one of my guitars setup. After getting her back in less than a week, I don't know if she's ever sounded better! For a bit of a finicky instrument, I was astounded with the intonation. I was so impressed with their work that I immediately brought back two more guitars and received some excellent assistance from Kellen. Absolutely fantastic store! I've been a few different times and each time the staff helped me with exactly what I needed and they treated me very kindly. They have a variety of different guitars and brands that will suit any players skill level and budget. These guys were all super friendly and helpful, despite my complete noob status in learning guitar they never made me feel stupid or acted condescendingly. I've been back a few times since buying my first guitar for a new string and some other accessories and they're always fast and helpful. I haven't talked with anyone there yet who doesn't love playing guitar and love music in general. I hope they stay around for years to come, hoping to get my kids into guitar when they're older and Murphy's will definitely have our business. read more

I forgot this was a place, despite making a mental note once upon a time to check it out. Selection seems to be a bit hodge-podgish, but there were a lot of really nice instruments there, as well as some lower end run-of-the-mill beginner stuff that you'd expect in servicing the town it does. I saw a lot of really nice basses and this might be the start point for when I get closer to wanting one of those. Acoustic selection was pretty solid as well, though most of it was in the upper range and not at all what I was after when I came in. Also didn't enjoy being followed around by the staff, something that has never happened to me, in any music store, ever before and was not particularly welcome. I'm not dinging them on the rating, but the instrument I intended to purchase will not be from them this go-around and I cut my visit well short accordingly. read more

Great customer service, very informative on there products and have very Friendly staff. When i moved here too bountiful i was looking for a guitar shop to have my gear taking care of and maintain them i have 12 instruments so a need someone who is knowledgeable on my gear coming from hawaii. It was hard for me in the past to have someone good to do repairs on my gear . Mike and his crew a very fast and respectful of my instruments and that is very important to me too have someone work on my babies. A cute little store on Main street in Bountiful. Super friendly employees. I went in with my kids, ages 11 to 21, and they enjoyed chatting with the employees and listening to their suggestions about the different guitars. We were able to get a list of all lessons taught and hope to start our son on guitar soon. read more

Terrific little shop in culture-starved Bountiful, serving up a decent selection of fender electric and acoustic guitars, amps and accessories. Murphy's is competitively priced with even with Guitar Center--they research prices and meet or beat them. Brand-wise, they're a little limited. Fender and Schecter for electric, and Godin branches for acoustic dominate the selection, but others are available to be ordered. It's a great shop, with turnaround time on a setup less than a week, oftentimes as little as a day. Not to mention the main tech there does magical setups. The guys are friendly, and everybody is always willing to work with you. I'd reccomend Murphy's over Guitar Czar, personally, but they're both great shops. Your money's better spent there than at Guitar Center. read more

I was blown away by the service at Murphy's Guitars. I brought in two vintage acoustic guitars from the late 60's that my dad owned and played all his musical life. They hadn't been played for a few years (nor had they been maintained properly), so I needed them "fixed up" and shipped to my home in New York. I was flying home the next morning, so I was in a pretty serious time crunch! Mike Murphy understood what I wanted, and told me that although he could do the repair work on these guitars, he recommended that I ship them first and get the work done in NY. He further explained that the humidity difference between SLC and NY would mean that a repair/restoration done in the dry mountain climate would leave the guitars in less than ideal condition when taken into the more humid environment on the east coast. Mike found a couple of spare guitar boxes in the back of the store and spent over an hour helping me pack the guitars properly in their cases with bubble wrap around the fretboards and headstocks. He then gave me solid recommendations for a shipping company nearby that could handle the shipping/insurance properly, as well as a reputable luthier in NY that could manage the restorations. All of this he did for FREE, and I walked out of the shop having only paid $1 for a replacement plastic tip for a worn capo (saved $25 by not buying a new capo, by the way). So, what can I say? You've got to have a ton of respect for a small business owner that will pass on an opportunity to sell a "city boy" service that he's asking for (but might not be ideal)... and then to spend a couple of hours giving him a ton of advice at no cost is simply above-and-beyond awesome service. The entire staff was great, and everyone I spoke with in the shop was a guitar enthusiast and knows their stuff. The store was recently expanded, so they have a solid inventory of both acoustic and electric. If I'm anywhere in the mountains and have an any guitar needs whatsoever, I'm bee-lining it straight to Murphy's. read more

I went here looking for an acoustic guitar and found a very helpful and knowledgeable sales associate to help me out. They spent an hour with me answering questions and helping me make a decision. The reason I give them three stars is two fold. First, you get a really cheap guitar strap for "free" when you buy a guitar. I got home that day and went to try it out and it didn't work with my guitar. I drove back a few days later looking for a solution and really just got blown off with nothing really solved. I was even willing to buy something new and they seemed unwilling to help me find an alternative. The second reason is that all of the accessories that I bought with the guitar were marked up before being "discounted" for me. I was doing some research on how to use my humidifier and discovered that it, and everything else was more expensive here than anywhere else. Essentially everything that i bought at a discount was really just the regular price. So rather than getting a good deal, i paid full price on just about everything. This has left me pretty disappointed. I don't regret my purchase but i doubt I'll spend any more money there. If you do buy here, make sure they price match. read more
